I been doing full body for a long time at home and I'm an experienced lifter. I've done splits too. I like the convenience of full body and if I workout two- three times per week, I hit everything 2-3x per week! I do it a bit differently though. I only hit Chest, Back, and Legs. So I choose an exercise for each ( usually a basic exercise) and do them as a circuit/superset. If I need to catch my breath, I do. Also I do abs and calves in between. I am 52 all of a sudden!...LOL. I don't feel there is a need to train shoulders and arms since they get enough work from the compound movements. Sometimes I'll hit them light, for reps. OR do a Squat press which is a great exercise which hits shoulders and everything else. A benefit to this routine is I'm also into Mountain Biking and full body does condition me for it and also since I hit everything in one workout, it's not a major inconvenience if I ride one day instead of train. And actually my motivation to continue training is so I can keep riding which I enjoy even more these days!😉
Great. The main thing is that you are still exercising and doing what works for you. I am 53 and I train 4 days a week with a split routine. Chest/Biceps/calves Back/ triceps Quads/ calves Hamstrings/ traps No more direct shoulder work. Maybe I will do them once every 2 months. Keep it up my fellow 50 year old friend
Full body workouts have always been my favorite. I've done split routines but I've made my best progress on full body workouts. Now at 72, I respond to working the entire body at a quick pace. Building muscle and cardio is nice.
@steelphantom9105 I usually train Mon, Tues Wed -off Thurs, Friday Sat- off Sun -off So it's 2 on, 1off, 2on, 2 off. Sometimes I will alter it a little a get the 5th day by training on Saturday too.
Whole life doing splits mainly PPL but full body makes more sense to and it is true today for first time I tried it and it was a murder the workout. I realized that my overall fitness is not there. I have great strength and I am 115kg athlete but full body hit me with reality check especially circuit training. I will start from now to do full body. Functionality and condition
As a 59 year old avid mtn biker, would I be better to just stop training legs in the gym? I’m currently doing a PPL split and riding 2 or 3 times a week. It’s tough riding after leg day, which is usually Bulgarian split squats, leg presses and calf raises.
Push pull all the way. Take 2 days rest each time . Recovery is key so im going for max recovery. If you train hard enough its all you need. Rest plenty, eat good .
Thank you for the great explanation. I’m 46 years old and have been training for 3 months. My body is shaping up nicely, and I’m losing weight. I’m currently doing a PPL routine 4 times a week, but I’m considering switching to full-body workouts (two exercises per muscle group) 3 times a week because I want to gain more muscle. I’ve read that muscles only grow for 48 hours after working out. Am I thinking correctly?
What about Time Under Tension for full body workout ( 3 times a week ) every muscle to bi hit with two deferent exercise ( 4 sets ), or to do only one exercise per muscle part with 6 sets also TUT for people over 40 year ?
