Parkside Petrol Chainsaw review - My thoughts on this budget saw: I like it!!

  • This video is my personal opinion and review on the Lidl's Parkside Petrol Chainsaw.
My review on this chainsaw is not to be considered advice but only my personal opinions.
Overall I really like this saw, for the money I actually think its fantastic especially with its 3 year warranty!!!
This saw is aimed at a homeowner that requires a chainsaw every now and then for some like duty pruning and garden maintenance and in my opinion based off of my experience with using this chainsaw, It would serve them very well!
In this review I am using this saw in a commercial felling environment however I would like to point out that the parkside chainsaw is not designed for that simply due to its build quality. Don't get me wrong you could certain use this saw to fell a few tree's but you wouldn't want to do it every day.
You should purchase a chainsaw based off of the purpose and environment you intent to use it, not just off budget alone.
This video was not sponsored or affiliated in anyway with Lidl's or Parkside and is simply for entertainment and educational purposes.
    Hope you enjoy!
Be safe, Be Lucky and thankyou for watching!

      Hi Brian
No problem atall and thank-you for your posotive feedback. I have used a number of saw throughout my career from various manufacturers and budgets, and i can honestly say that as a budget friendly saw i was amazed at its capabilities and quality, dont get me wrong there are aspects and features that are bot quite on par with some of the more renown manufactures but this is relevant to the price, the biggest thing that impressed me with this particular saw is like you say the huge 3 year warranty, I dont even get half of that with my commercial saws and they are up to 12x the price!! I hope you enjoy it and find it serves you well!
Thanks for your comment and for watching

A tip for all before its too late
the bar tension studs are a weak point
they go into the alloy case , and they are not threaded all the way thru.
they half threaded , the rest is took up with the shank of the stud.
so for a 13 mm, ish deep plate /cover, the thread, is only about 5-6 mm deep.
and its a 8x1.25 thread, not a coarse thread, which should be used on ally bits.
the stud will come out after time as when tightening the nuts up, they pull the thread out from the case.
the holes for studs go right thru into the chain oil tank
If you catch the problem first, { essential really } by taking studs out.
and from the inside, { thru the fill plug hole } with the use of a Ball ended allen key, { needed as holes are off set a little to the fill hole } insert a 3 inch fully threaded allen bolt, this will not pull out, as the head is tight up against the inside ribs.
can use loctite or a thread sealer, as if not ,oil will seep past bolts threads.
if you leave it too late, as I did , the the only option that works is to drill tap out to 10 mm, either 1.25,or 1.75, and fit an allen bolt from inside oil tank
If going to 10 mm, the bar will need to be opened up to let the bigger bolt in channel
also the spacer in the cover will need to be taken out, and a thick flat washer used instead to spread the loadings from bigger nut.
drill spacer out, there nothing left, and it will squash up,
can go bigger spacer, but really no need with a bigger washer.
can helicoil, but same problem exists, heli could pull out from the ally case with constant use
other mod well worth it, is to make a longer nut, so the threads cant get damaged thru tightening often, I used a brass hex bar, drilled to suit bolt, and are 25mm / 1 inch long,
so can use both ends if one end does wear, and also much easier to get spanner on with out it slipping of a small nut.
do it now when threads are ok, its a 15 min job,
wait till its pulled out, then 2-3 hours if you got the gear to do it
no gear ,its going to be pay some one else, so cost will go up
do it now, then 2, 3 inch allen bolts, some lock tite and 15 mins tops, and 1£ in bits.
I suspect other chain saws of this type are same, a stud not threaded all the way, so basicly a weal point
Hope this may be of some use to others.

I received this chainsaw today, started it to test. When taking it off and putting it down I saw the chain oil dripping out. I assume this has been the problem from the beginning? Didn't happen to make a how-to video? Or should it be replaced under warranty?

I bought this same chainsaw for £65 about a year and a half ago. Nearly all of my winter heating is from burning locally scavenged wood, and it's half way through its second winter. I can't believe how much work it's done and it still runs flawlessly - I bought it expecting it to be essentially "free" as there would be no way it would last all three years of its warranty, but actually it's showing no signs of giving up! This chainsaw sounds like with unadjusted max rpm. The original Zenoah construction work with 12500-13000 rpm. This Parkside sounds like not more than 10000 rpm. Adjust the carburetor, use fuel mixture not richer than 40:1 and you will unlock the real power of this tool.

@@hardcoreplayafromthehimala4888 The reason is that not everyone uses quality oil and fuel. Branded tools such as Stihl also recommend using only their oil 50:1, but if you use another oil, they recommend 25:1.
Already 4 years I have been using a cheap Chinese saw with synthetic Stihl oil in a 50:1 ratio without any problems. The same goes for mine brushcutter.

@@hardcoreplayafromthehimala4888 This is nonsense. Stihl brush cutters like the FS-55 run at even lower speeds (~9000rpm) than Chinese chainsaws with this oils without any problem. My Chinese chainsaw, for example, is set at 12500rpm, its factory settings were 10500rpm, but with Chinese chainsaws they vary greatly. Even the factory settings at idle speed are often incorrect and even the chain is moving. They also vary greatly, from 2500 to over 3500, and even 4,000 - the moment that the centrifugal clutch is activated. The cheap Chinese chainsaws are often not precisely tuned at the factory, but this engine is designed to work with 12500-13000rpm in the old models of Zenoah like G4500 and even 13500-14000 in the updated G4501P.
Of course, they can work with a richer mixture (10500rpm 25:1), but the power they realize will be significantly lower and fuel consumption higher.

Great little saw, but to get the best from it, you got to run it at a much better mix
40-1 is book, but 30-1 better, and with a bit more smoke, 25-1 is better still, gives lots more power , as compression goes up with extra oil, and so engine should last longer

I run a 2019 562xp as my daily with a 20" setup, and I won't lie I really like it, feels like a very harmonised machine. Although I still use some of my golden oldies on a number of occasions. I was not a great fan of the older Husky models so allot of my old saw's are stihl's but that just personal preference.
With regards to rebuilding I think it simply comes down to what saw it is, I strongly beleive in repairing rather than replacing, I think theese days we throw far to much away as it is! on my smaller saw's I often find it truly is not viable to do any significant repairs so I often just replace them, but I find that my older saw's are the ones that are often worth saving as they simply are not built like that anymore. Alot of my larger, higher spec saw's I do try to repair rather than replace, as you can often repair for half the price of a replacement. But really I think it all comes down to what machine it is (age and spec) and what needs doing and how much it will cost. ☺️

@@tikatola93 Hi Stephen I won't lie I haven't had an issue, I had it at first where the muffler itself was smoking after use but I beleive that was just the paint cooking off as it cleared after a number of uses. When you say you put it next to a branch was it the branch that started to smoke or the muffler itself?

Review is by a, hmm, professional and with a viewpoint of comparing the Parkside to a Stihl or Husky as comparable merchandise is most unfair. Firstly it's a cheap chainsaw for occasional use by a homeowner, and not a £400to £700 Stihl. Secondly the chain lubrication oil tank filler bung has a smaller filler bung than a professional saw,, such as Stihl, for a reason. (it's not designed for repeated filling and use.) Occasional use as its a cheap saw, however that said, for the money it works amazingly well. One drawdown I have found with the same Parkside model as reviewed here, is the guide lubrication oil needs to be of a thinner viscosity, as it, over time becomes very thick and prevents a suitable amount of oil to lubricate the guide bar, but then again it's meant for occasional use only. If you want a professional saw, pay the professional saw price. Simple really. Incidentally been felling lumber for over 40 years and have found out that there is no such word as cheap anything. You simply get what you pay for in life.

Hi and Thankyou for your comment.
Im sorry that you feel that I am a Professional as this is certainly not the case, I certainly do not want to portray this either.
With regards to the comparison I was not making a like for like Comparison between this saw and a Stihl or husky, as there is no comparison between the 2. I was actually stating in favour of the Parkside over a Husky, Stihl or Echo as for the money I thought it was a fantastic saw. I also stated that the parkside saw was not intended or meant to be use in a commercial environment and was simply designed and dedicated to a homeowner for lightweight use.
I mentioned the oil filler bung simply as a personal opinion, which is regardless to the market it is designed for. I have used other cheaper brands of saws in the past that are both intended for commercial use yet the filler spout is still large enough for the spout on a combi can. This comment was simply an observation and personal opinion.
Again I apologise if you felt that I was making a direct comparison between this and other brands, however i use other brands such as husky, Stihl or echo as most people will be familiar with those and will be able to relate easily with them.
I actually felt that for the money this was a fantastic saw and actually exceeded my expectations, in certain ways this actually put other brands to shame, and in fact still have the saw to this day.
I completely appreciate that if you want a professional saw then you have to pay professional money, which is exactly why I have multiple professional level saw’s that I use for day to day commercial activities, as like you say, the Parkside is not designed for that.
Im sorry that you did not feel this was a good representation and a poor review, i simply made this video based off of my own opinions and for entertainment purposes rather than “professional advice”
Thankyou for watching and for your feedback, I will bear this in mind for future demonstrations.
      Kind Regards

Good Morning Josh, I am glad that you have taken the time to read my comments and responded so courteously, without the need for derogatory and inflammatory comments and suggestions, as so often happens when a different opinion is offered on these forums. So I thank you for being gentlemanly and professional with your response. My main area of concern was readers who have never used a chainsaw, jumping into a decision to purchase a saw which is not as robust as let's say, a more professional piece of equipment.
They do a good enough job ,but alas are built to a set budget . I have found over the years ,that if they are expensive enough, then most novices avoid them on price point alone. Let's not forget that these things can cause horrendous casualties in the hands of well intentioned individuals. I have personally witnessed two such encounters. Not something many people seem to think about it appears, until it is too late. Keep up the good reviews, they are enjoyable and I look forward to more to follow. Best Regards Trevor

      @@trevor3104 Hi Trevor.
I would also like to thankyou for your humble response and opinions.
I think the trouble is these days it is so easy for people to base opinion on a subject or person based of a very short period of time ( such as a 10 min video) and allot of context can be missed or misinterpreted. The issue can go both ways as often the individuals that write the comments can often be derogatory or harmful which to the creator can be frustrating, However there are often instances where certain comments contain specific factual merit or like you say simple personal opinion/ constructive criticism and yet people still take offence.
I find the issue is especially on these platforms is people take the text they are reading as face value, rather than actually taking the time to read the comments expressed properly and from a broader perspective. People seem to have a real issue these days with accepting and listening to other people's opinions which I have never really understood, I for sure have learned a lot in life by taking on others opinions, Comments and criticism.
I as an individual am in no way perfect nor do I pretend to be but I am also one that will whole heartedly admit and also show my mistakes, there are is another video on my channel that demonstrates one of my biggest in the tree cutting world! feel free to watch it if you fancy a cringe!
A gentleman once said to me " A man who has made no mistakes, has made nothing at-all"
I completely agree with you, anybody in the market looking to purchase equipment such as chainsaws should do the correct research dependent on their intended use and purpose and not just based on a budget or " that'll do" mindset. like you say a saw such as this would serve no purpose in a commercial environment as they would not last but more importantly potentially be quite dangerous.
I really appreciate anybody that takes the time to watch my videos. I only have a small channel but even If one of my videos helps 1 individual the i am happy with that!
If only the world could learn to communicate without the need to take offence then we may all just learn a thing or two!
If you feel they are relevant to you please feel free to subscribe.
Again Trevor, Thankyou for your time, for watching and your conversation!
      Take care, All the best
