  • Did you know that many individuals who are blind, DeafBlind or have low vision utilize refreshable braille displays connected to smartphones or computers to access information? This enables them to read messages, emails, and other content in braille.
Apple's iPhone features a built-in accessibility tool called VoiceOver. When used in conjunction with a connected braille display, it translates the text on the screen into braille allowing DeafBlind or blind individuals to read the information through touch.
Refreshable braille displays function by converting digital text into braille characters displayed on a row of pins. These pins can be raised or lowered to form braille characters. As the user reads the braille, the pins are refreshed to display the subsequent line of text.
At the Helen Keller National Center, our Adaptive Technology Department offers training to DeafBlind participants on how to utilize these devices and others, improving their connectivity, communication, and access to information.
    Video Transcript:
“So right now, we're going to access this iPhone using voiceover that I have connected to the braille display. I want to go to Accessibility. And I'm going to double tap. I can access my iPhone using voiceover and I can also read the braille. So, here it says Touch. It’s capital T o u c h. So, I can read along and this braille display allows me to access anything on the iPhone.”
