STORYLINE:
Americans gathered on Tuesday to ring in 2003 at New Year's Eve celebrations that, in keeping with the times, were cost-conscious and security-aware.
There was a chance of rain in New York's Times Square, but the crystal, laser-lit ball that is dropped to count down the last seconds of the old year rises and falls no matter the weather.
The ball was set in motion this year by Mayor Bloomberg and actor Christopher Reeve's wife Dana. Reeve was by her side as she began the celebrations.
The Times Square 2003 Balloon Crew inflated ten-thousand red balloons to hand out to revellers, and a blizzard's worth of red, white and blue confetti was stockpiled on roofs.
But police also welded manholes shut and removed mailboxes from Times Square, and said undercover officers would mix with the crowd, expected to exceed 500-thousand.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said about 2,000 officers would be on duty, with sharpshooters stationed on roofs, and that security would be heightened at New York Harbour.
The Department of Homeland Security issued a low-level alert for New York's ports earlier in the day, saying an intelligence source had warned of eight "diversionary" attacks throughout the state before a possible harbour attack.
"There was an uncorroborated report about New York Harbour," Kelly said, adding that pleasure craft had been barred from the harbour and additional police vessels had been deployed.
Revellers seemed unfazed by the tighter security. As 2002 dwindled and the crowd grew, they eagerly accepted the glittering blue-and-white pompoms Times Square employees handed them.

@@SylveonMujigaeOfficial I bet those were from sound trucks like they had used 60 years earlier during World War II. They would use those chimes again in 2004.
@@meh5552I think they were from the top screens
@@Clos1300 Oh.
audio was fine but not the discover card billboard. And at 57 seconds til 2003 the button was pressed too early
Funny enough, that button doesn’t actually start the dropping of the ball. It’s a common misconception.
