    The funniest thing I remember in physics class in about year 9 or 10 is discussing these equations, specifically v^2 = u^2 + 2as then I say, "The ceiling is this high, so if I throw the pencil up at precisely this speed...." then I throw a pencil up in the air and it comes just shy of the ceiling by a tiny margin. Then my friends being wowed.

    • @arianas7866
      @arianas7866 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes it would be.
      You would use the formular s=1/2at^2+ut tho instead
      Substituting it in would be 0=-4.9t^2+6t
      and you would get the same answer for t as he did :) without using the -6ms^-1 for the v

      I noticed that too,now the question is whether the ball came to rest at the hand so that the final velocity became zero?

    • @gravnine
      @gravnine 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think you mean u = 6 but when you substitute it into the equation it becomes -6. Taking the final velocity as 0 then x2 is the same as taking the final velocity as -6. But when you take the final velocity to be zero, you are calculating the maximum height of the ball when you throw it, multiplying by 2 would give you the total DISTANCE and not the DISPLACEMENT (which Suvat works with). it would make sense if the ball was thrown up and it stayed floating somehow, but since it returned to its original position the displacement is 0. However for this problem it doesn't matter since you aren't asked to work out S, but its helpful to know anyway I think.

    For the final example about the ball being thrown up. Would v not be 0? Since it's returning to the same point the displacement would be 0, this means the velocity would be 0? Tell me if i'm being stupid :)

    • @juliak9899
      @juliak9899 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey, V is equal to zero when it reaches the highest peak. Since the ball comes back to his hand, it would actually be S (the displacement) that would be equal to zero. You can solve this problem if you use the s,u,a and t (whilst searching for t) instead of v like he did in the video and it would still give you the same answer. Hope this helped but if I've confused you, feel free to tell me

    • @juliak9899
      @juliak9899 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, I just noticed that you understood that s is equal to zero so if you're searching for v, use the s,v, a and u equation. When solving for v, it will give you 6 m/s (V^2=u^2 + 0 since 2*9.8*0=0) but remember that it is going the opposite direction so it is -6 m/s.

      Speed and velocity both describe how fast an object is moving, but velocity also gives what direction this is in. If you say "the velocity is 5m/s", you must also say "to the right" for example. BUT if you see "the speed is 10m/s horizontally", this is actually a velocity because you have both speed and direction! See th-cam.com/video/n58kAPcxNwc/w-d-xo.html for more help :)

    Hi, I have a question. A girl is standing on a bridge and throws a coin with a vertical velocity of 5 ms^-1. It hits the water below the bridge after 1.5 seconds. Assuming that the effects of air resistance are negligible, what was the initial height of the coin above the water?

      Taylor Shill he has a video on projectiles! Try watching that as it will take Into account vertical velocity and horizontal velocity

      But I think it’s 7.5m as distance is speed x time so 5 x 1.5 which is 7.5

      Tom Andrews the actual answer is 3.5m

      Taylor Shill no it’s not? If you include the effect of gravity I got 18m and without I got 7.5m? Would like to see how you got that answer

      Tom Andrews it’s from the mark scheme, I’m also not getting 3.5m that’s why I’m asking

    At the start I was so confused thinking what the hell is suvat thinking have my teachers taught me something completely random but then I realised it was literally uvast(what I was taught )rearranged. Great start. 🤦

      @@ScienceShorts I don't know😅 that's what I was taught. Got a physics mock tomorrow so go over some stuff last minute. Sort of freaking out because there's a couple equations I keep forgetting. I hope it goes alright because i want to take physics for a level. Your videos are really useful so thank you 👍

    7:47 shouldn't it be "-9.81ms^-2"??

      no, the person is falling down, in the direction of gravity.
