    how does the audience clap/react:
    3:19 - halfnotes
    4:19 - quaternotes
5:19 - 3/2 polyrhytm, each 3 pulses of music - 2 claps. easier to hear it around 6:20
    7:30 - whole notes
around 9:10 audience starts to clap quaternotes again, then halfnotes for a moment
    10:00 - eight notes
    11:05 - quaternotes again
    11:28 - halfnotes
12:30 - quaters with halfnote accents
    13:42 - quaters

What people think I listen to when I say I like classical music:
    - Mozart, Beethoven etc
    What I actually listen to:

Wow... I first hear this piece live in 1973, performed by Black Earth (which recorded it). This is far better, full of life. much more in the general spirit of Rzewski's music.

This goes to show how hard it can be to get a classical audience to participate the way an audience at a pop/rock concert would. Participation is largely absent until permission is fully granted from a performer taking the lead by clapping over his head.
I love how after everyone is clapping on the quarter note, the percussionist gets the audience to syncopate, then they can't sustain it, so they fall out of synchrony with each other and settle 1 metrical level higher. Brilliant piece and performance.

I think Rzewski deeply resented the traditional way in which concerts usually happen, and I think this also points to a real problem: auditoriums are more and more empty because they have calcified into museum pieces, where nothing is alive, whereas people like Rzewski understood that the audience isn't the same as in the 19th century. The 21th century needs more composers like him who can empower the audience in a new way, as great composers in the past did (in a totally different way)

Eighth Blackbird hardly make any mistakes (if any) in their version, and it's boring. The slips are what gives this piece counterpoint! Rzewski's instruction is "Once lost, stay lost"
