Hi there, yes, we like the piping foot a lot! It is a versatile little helper and ideal for sewing on ribbons or cord or iserting piping. The best way to find out whether it is right for you is to visit your BERNINA dealer and test sew the foot.
I use a lot of custom made mini piping in my art-to-wear. I bought foot #38. Despite many attempts it just doesn’t work. I wonder if others have had this issue?
Hi Patty, thanks for your comment. We will try to help you. Can you please tell us in more detail what you want to do, what materials and settings you're working with, and what the problem is?
I use cotton crochet thread covered with silk or cotton cut on the bias to make tiny piping. I find that when trying to apply the piping with it tight up to the ledge on left toe of # 38 there is no room for the piping. The foot doesn’t allow for change of needle position so the stitches always end up on the cording part of the piping. I chose the foot after watching the video but just can’t make it work. I appreciate your help with this. Thanks!
@@pattysampson4779 Hi Patty, thanks a lot! The Piping Foot #38 is designed to create mini-piping. Its stitch hole is only for the straight stitch and center needle position. If the stitch ends up on the cord, the cord is too thick. Please try with a thinner cord. When working with thicker cord, you may use the Edgestitch Foot #10 or one of the pintuck feet. We hope this helps.
@@BerninaInternational Hi, Thank you for responding. Somehow I don’t feel quite satisfied. Don’t get me wrong I am now 70 years old. I got my first Bernina when I was 23. I had a custom sewing business where I had five seamstresses. I used only Berninas in my shop. I purchased a 570 QE in February and last month I bought. Q16. I also bought Berninas for both of my daughters. You can see that I love your products. I still feel irritated about foot #38. The endless yards of piping I have made over the years is very fine. Crochet cotton covered with fine silk or cotton is certainly mini piping in my mind. If the foot were not called the piping foot I may feel differently about it, but buying the pricey piping foot and then finding that I can’t use it for piping is irritating. I put something on FaceBook about piping foot alternatives and there was only one woman that said the piping foot works for her. Everyone else submitted alternative feet that I should try. I have some of the feet suggested, but some mentioned I don’t own. I’ve tried #30, #10, #31, #4 etc. I have yet to find a foot that really works well for this purpose. Mini piping is integral to almost all of my art-to-wear jackets so I want to find a solution. A number of people suggested foot # 23. It looks like it may have possibilities but I am reluctant to buy yet another foot until I am sure it will work. The feet are expensive. I would love to hear back from you with ideas! Best, Patty Sampson
@@pattysampson4779 Dear patty, we understand your point of view and I will forward your feedback to the responsible department here at BERNINA in Steckborn! It is certainly not our intention to mislead customers. The video above shows mini piping and our website (www.bernina.com/en-US/Accessories-US/Presser-Feet/Decorative-sewing/Piping-Foot-38 ) states that this foot is ideal for "narrow and medium-width piping". Which, of course, raises the question of what is meant by "medium" ... This is one of the reasons why BERNINA product are sold by trained specialist dealers only. Dealers can answer questions and provide customers with the advice that is often necessary. As for your specific project and purpose: It is very difficult to evaluate the thickness of a cord without seeing and feeling it and testing it under the needle. We can therefore only propose some other feet that are also suitable for your kind of piping. Using a bias binder or the Edgestitch Foot #10 are two possible options. I’d rather use the Edgestitch Foot #10 (th-cam.com/video/doK2BhV8QN4/w-d-xo.html ) because you can guide the cord along the guide and you are able to change the needle position. Clear Appliqué Foot #23 (th-cam.com/video/Yq83fUBT-lU/w-d-xo.html ) could be another option. We tested it with a of 1.5 mm diameter and it worked. If possible, please make an appointment with your dealer and take to your fabric and cord to the dealer to test different feet. Or call your dealer to get advice on the phone.
Dear Sewing forfun, the design of the BERNINA piping foot is different. The sole has two different height levels, so the thick layer with the piping can be placed under the right side of the foot. The piping can be guided along the edge. See 01:38 of the video.
I have nr 10 and use and like it a lot. Is this foot really an addition to the 10?

Disappointing that Bernina do not make a piping foot with a groove on the bottom as in other sewing machines
