This is a good shouting match, but nothing beats the gambling tirade Big Mike went on after the now disgraced NY AG banned sports gambling in the state and a caller told Mike fantasy sports isn't gambling.
I am a former high school and collegiate pitcher and long time coach. I absolutely can't stand the current approach to baseball- pitch counts, using 4-5 pitchers every game, and now this latest proposed idiocy. It's not "thinking outside the box", its asinine reinvention of the wheel. Any starter worth his salt would soundly reject this nonsense.
Pitching mechanics are clearly a problem. Watch guys who pitched 300 innings in a given season and compare how he winds up and releases. So much torque in the arm/shoulder/back nowadays and not using their legs and hips to transfer momentum. Nolan Ryan talked a lot about getting velocity from his hip transfer
@@JacobStevens13 I think pitchers and position players alike do way TOO MUCH weight training during the season. There is no need and potential for injury by just doing that. If you want to use light weights during the season, fine. But heavy lifting should be relegated to the offseason.
Congrats. The people making these decisions in the MLB played much further than college ball and clearly know baseball more than you do, but maybe your TH-cam complaining will make a difference

Go back & watch 1990 NLCS Game 6 Pirates Reds, the Reds had The Nasty Boys a great all time pen. In order to counter it Jim Leyland started Pirates closer Ted Power to try & get a early lead then Zane Smith his normal starter came in later. Reds won 2-1 Pirates scored 1 run on 1 hit.
I agree 100% a manager can't manage a game these stat geeks have no clue how to manage games. Post Season is different you manage backwards. Yet during the year the opener to me makes no sense.
"there was more yardage in that game last year than any other game played in the NFL last year" technically correct, but there was more yardage in that game than any game in NFL HISTORY.
While I strongly disagree with the caller as I pointed out in my previous post Jim Leyland tried it in 1990 against the Reds it didn’t work however I’m totally on Francescas side cause it’s stupid to use a reliver pitcher in the first inning Francesca is right a closer is brought in to end the game. The early innings nobody wants to cause nobody has any idea what’s gonna happen early!!!!
It’s simple why teams do it. Use your best closer on the top of the lineup to start the game. Bring in your starter next innning. Best hitters on oppppsing team probably won’t see the starter for the first time until the 3rd inning. Won’t get a chance to see him potentially a 3rd time (4th time through the order). It’s smart and it works, particularly for a team like Tampa that tries to change up arm angels of pitchers as much as possible to keep the hitters uncomfortable
@@patrickgray5633 yes that team. You’re one of those people that just need to say something for the sake of saying something. @@pastelskystudios8458 that’s ridiculous it makes no sense leave a starter pitching well in don’t say oh we are gonna hook him or we will be like the A’s & start a opener in the Wild Card game where all those A’s relievers pissed their pants at Yankee stadium.
There are 8 more innings after the 1st inning. You need your relievers to be available at the end of the game, typically the last three innings. We all know this. The opener is a horrible addition to pitching in baseball.
Mike knows a lot of people are talking about this and he is afraid if it could take flight and possible change baseball... he is more of a traditionalist
Vincent Cuttolo yes, I'm DEAD Serious. IM A diehard M's fan. most of our pitcher give up big 1st innings. it makes sense to carry 2 lights out closers and rotate them, have one pitch the 1st inning a few times a week. more teams will start doing this
Mike is probably the same dude who still thinks Japanese cars are unreliable. Time to get with the times we have more info. Hate these cavemen old school guys
The caller is correct if the 1 inning is highest run stat Mike shut up the game is in desperate shape calls for something new like the President says "we'll see what happens "
The caller might be correct about the stat, but has nothing to do with Mike's Point. You need your closer / relieving pictures for when your starters get into trouble or you need to win the game. It's very hard to lose a game in the first inning.
bob jenkins the point is that since the best hitters usually bat in the first inning the starting pitcher might not have to see those batters 3 times and definitely not 4 and possibly pitch to the 8th inning
Then the second inning stats would blow up. Starters take an inning to get warmed up. The opener guy can't pitch every game and nobody's bullpen that good.
"Wait a Second!" - the title of Mike's retirement
That should be the title to an autobiography of his
