''You're going to lose your Generals in battle as the Britons, it's just going to happen'' - I changed them to Cav Generals in the files for this very reason. They never charge where you tell them to either, just to maximise the chances of it happening! So I gave them the Thracian ones cos they have the Barb Shield and are a similar colour.

That's probably the best choice if you change it around. I'd probably make it a post Marian change personally as I enjoy the madness (sometimes).

@@ToNerdistoHumanTNH I just figured if I'm conquering the map as the Britons or someone not Roman, its already AU anti-historical anyway, so I may as well change the rosters a bit now after multiple playthroughs with the basic rosters.
I'm currently adding in some units from BI and mods for more variety, to various factions, but it's taking ages cos of all the files you have to edit...
In the case of the Britons, I've already given them some mid level spears with bigger shields, various level archers and cav, the Coastal Spearmen and Romano-British Legionaries from BI, and the Temple to Neptune (Britania rules the waves after all!) - wait til I've finished adding Phrygian Axemen to recruit from the Temple (they have a blue colour, and a fish-fin-like bit on their helmets - it just fits!), they will be Neptune's Axemen! They need a Heavy Pike unit of some kind too, need to beat the Germans and Easterners at that too...

I love playing the Britons. They tech up surprisingly quickly. Head Hurlers are unbelievably good against tough armoured units. Their experience shrine adds a big punch (morale, attack & defense, reload speed & accuracy), and if you can capture Shrines to Abnoba (+X to missile), your Slingers (a.k.a. The General's Personal Shotgun) will positively _melt_ any unit, even enemy cavalry on a full charge.
@Lugotorix constantly dismisses Slingers in favour of Peltasts, but I disagree with him: after Slingers and Peltasts run out of ammo, they have the same stats; they're both crappy infantry. Here's the rub: Peltasts, do slightly more damage per shot but have only _6 shots_ before they become crappy infantry; Slingers have something like 50 shots and they also have greater range. Because Britain can tech up so fast (blacksmiths/armourors), has native XP shrines, and can capture nearby Abnoba shrines, that meager 4 Missile from Slingers very quickly jumps to a respectable 10 Missile. They do less damage per-shot, but they have way more ammo and thus deliver more damage overall. Slingers trump Peltasts every single time. And because they have more staying power than peltasts, they rack up more kills and XP more quickly, going from 3 to 6 relatively quickly. Don't underestimate Slingers.
And chariots....they're just unfair. You can certainly flub a chariot charge, but one well-executed with a single unit can rack up 400+ kills easily.
The Briton generals also frequently pick up ancillaries and traits what help reduce casualties, so between the above-mentioned shrines and this trait, your Warbands become surprisingly effective units, and your elite units get just ridiculous pretty quickly. Druids are essential; they're essentially a General stand-in. Plonk one in the middle of your army, set it to chant and nothing else, and watch your army absolutely wreck face.
A well-structured Briton army well-commanded will make mincemeat out of any army they encounter, even on very hard.

In your late game example you lost quite a lot of chariots because you sent them head first into high quality units. Meanwhile your own high quality infantry was sitting back doing absolutely nothing despite defense being their predominant stat. I personally just use hammer and anvil with Chosen Swordsmen playing the role of the Phalanx(even without it they still hold the line well enough) and heavy chariots playing the heavy cavalry(they do a decent enough job, especially against non Phalanx units like the Romans). I find that I lose fewer troops this way, or well save up on retraining costs and actually feel good about using all of my units rather than just my chariots. Yeah a few Head Hurlers in there are always nice, mostly firing in between cycle charges of the chariots, more useful against the Phalanx factions than the Romans/other barbarians.
Speaking of Egypt, I think they're actually the easiest matchup for Britannia compared to the other top tier factions. The reason is simple, Egypt has the weakest cavalry(as in horse/camel units) options which means your heavy chariots will dominate the cavalry fight. Also their Pharaoh's Guard don't have shields for whatever reason, unlike all other phalanx units, which make them extra vulnerable to your Head Hurlers. Again if I'm not auto resolving I'm focusing less on the chariots and more on the other units, though in this case I actually bring more Head Hurlers and fewer Chosen Swordsmen. Chariots to win the cav fight than rear charge, Head Hurlers to soften up the Phalanx before they crush into your lines than move into flanking positions(turning off fire at will to avoid friendly fire) and cycling chariot charges and thrown heads.

In the early game, light chariots can be used much like horse archers of the east. When in skirmish mode, they keep their distance. When using 6-7 of them, they're very effective against Gaul, Germania, and Spain (basically all the factions that surround yours in the beginning). They're especially effective against the slow moving Germanian phalanxes.

  • @mattphillips2844

I go after Gaul very fast and fight Germania at a more natural pace, ambushing them and taking the initiative when ready with hurlers/dogs/light chariots. Their territories don’t make you rich anyway. Just wear them down. Also for economic reasons it’s peasants to hold cities, not overpriced warbands. If you stay on offense it won’t matter. Light chariots/hurlers/dogs with the occasional infantry and skirmishers as bait do the job against everyone. I just need Andrasta temple in most with the blacksmith. Getting south and into Roman territory fast is the goal well before the reforms. In fact if you sack/slaughter all the Roman cities you can delay the reforms and even prevent them by not letting any of them get huge. After that you are rich and able to take on or respond to anyone.

    *Thanx, Thomas, nice video!*
*You are a Brit yourself - so being objective on this matter is next impossible... :-D We, Historical Puritans, demand these changes:*
    - faction name change to Celtic tribes
    - Headhurlers have IMPOSSIBLE 17 in missile attack - needs to be lowered
    - Chosen swordsmen must be what Pretorian guard is to Rome - expensive and hard to get
    - faction attitude needs to be a LOT LESS AGGRESSIVE
    - northest settlement to be made UNCONQUERABLE (since it was).

@@IvicaArmanas Also naming the Britons "Celts" would not work, why? Because the Gauls should also be called Celts then, as that was what they were. No no no, Rome total war is looked in the eyes of the Romans, they did not see them as many tribes , just 1 mythical nation. The Germans were not 1 nation, but in the eyes of the Romans they were. Same with the Gauls, they were Celts. It was the Romans who distinguished then. So if you want to be historical, then yeah change them to the Celts, but then also change the Gauls/Germans/Scythians/Dacians. See what I mean, problems come if you divide them all by tribes. The game Rome 2 divedes them all by tribes, but then again rome starts much smaller in Rome 2, so the game is still fair, but still accurate. This can't be done in Rome 1 tho, as the roman families (the Julii to be precise) will steam them all 1 by 1, not very fun. Still agree with you on the North, should be nearly impossible to invade.

@@ToNerdistoHumanTNH I agree, while the Brutii are in my opinion the best of the Romans, the Julii have the best RP. With the scipii it can be fun to play as Scipio Africanus and launch a campain against Carthage and fight "Hanible".

@@IvicaArmanas Also, I like the roman eagle, sure. BUT, the shewolf is an even more important symbol then the Aquila (eagle) so for the Scipii it's ok, a gold eagle would be nice for the Julii, but again, the leaf crown is associated with Gaius Julius Caesar and it works. I have no clue what the Brutii logo is, I think it represents a roman Gladius being thrusted into the ground to show power, which from what we hear in the Brutii starting speach video seems to make scene, so only the Senatus Popolusque Romanus (SPQR) need the eagle, well that's in my opinion.

Now i think about it a Conquistador campain would probably be the most interesting RP ever, instead of in the 16th century going to South America, let's do it in 270 BC going to 1 of the eastern factions, like your Arthur camapin, sometimes it's fun to mess up history a bit, just for fun!
