  • A first look at Firemaple's Orange Gas Lantern. This is a small, lightweight and portable lantern that will run off your camping gas canisters. In this video I get the lantern out of its box, get it lit and give my first impressions. Tune into my next video to see it in action.
    Thanks for watching, and let me know in the comments if you have any questions.
    James.

    Looks pretty cool. As someone who rarely takes out food and gas, I could see myself getting one for longer evenings out and about and actually cooking some food as well.

      I still can't get my head around your lack of hot food. All I'm thinking about for the hour before I reach camp is all the hot stuff I'm going to eat when I get there!! It's fun playing with fire! 😁 Cheers, James.

    What a lovely item, maybe one for my Christmas list, would be great on a snow camp ⛺️ thank you for showing us!

      Ah thanks Sarah! I think snowy camps are exactly where this little lantern would shine brightest, as it were 🕯️ I doubt I'll use it in spring and summer, but it's a good dark night companion 😍 James.

    This is actually bigger than it looked in the pictures, yes its extra weight and pack space but I do actually like the look of this and during these long winter nights this would have more charm than a head torch and it would add some enjoyment (maybe some nominal heat) I would love to see the glass survive a full tank of gas on high but still flame below the glass to see how durable it is against the heat

      @BulldogBadger 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Run time on medium on a full tank would be nice to know too

      Evening Mr Badger! It was the ambience and the movement/vibe of the flame that appealed to me. As you say, it should be capable of increasing the temperature within the tent to a small extent too. You can bet that even if the measured increase in warmth was negligible, the perceived (placebo) effect would be there.
      The glass tube is made of borosilicate glass, so the heat aspect should not be an issue. Burn time would be a good one to know about, I agree. I didn't test that for you I'm afraid!

    Led Lenser make a very good small hanging light that give out either a nice warm light or a harsh white light ( make sure you buy the appropriate one).
    Also if you already have an existing light you want to tone down a bit you can buy a tiny bottle of transparent paint from an art shop to coat the lens with the colour of your choice!

      Thanks David. I'm actually a big fan of my Flextail pump/lantern with the lampshade fitted, and it has the three brightness settings. I know that some people prefer a real flame though, so thought I'd share a gas lantern to see what the reaction was. Nice little crafty tip there for modifying the light output from an electric lantern! Maybe I'll go for a green light disco tent next time 🤣 James.

      @@joinmeoutdoors easily removed with thinners so you can change the colour as the mood and season's take you. I spent an inordinate amount of time trying to decide between coral and hot sand!

    Does the canister cover not help to insulate the canister in below zero conditions re butane gas atomising 🤔

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's probably going to keep the canister marginally warmer than not having a canister cover, but it's just a thin leather cover intended more for aesthetic improvement I'd say.

    Glass... not for me. Seeing the flame deffo not.

      It might provide some nice low light for photography of an evening around a tent.

      These were concerns of mine too, but they fizzled away once I actually used it in my tent. See my video next week for that, but I'm not trying to convert you 😊 James.

      Haha! I loaded it right into the bottom of my 20 kg-laden rucksack last weekend and it survived that, plus I didn't turn myself into a feather-wrapped inferno, so the early signs are promising 😅
