When it came back my Dad ran outside and sprayed it with the hose. It lunged at him and then ran off into the woods. He then bought a rifle for the house.

After he bought a rifle and kept it and a box of ammo by the kitchen door. It was going to end up in a display case at nearby Yale University in New Haven Connecticut or maybe donate it to UCONN.
As long as you show respect to them without crossing their lines or getting to close to them to make them feel their in danger they are very smart and very fast just never push to close to them they will take it as disrespect of their bubble and will attack and running away won't help or to try getting in a tree they can snap a tree like a toothpick without trying

When I walk alone in the forest I often see many animals. But when I walk with some friend we never see anything and I imagine how the animals are looking at us from some hidden place.

Yes i seen one about 7 1/2 foot tall in north Florida with a chest about 3 foot thick, but we have a family of them here and the big one has 29 inch footprints, I slept in a tent in out back yard because i wanted to get close to nature after losing my wife and the shock Waves woken me at night as it walked in the shadows ( the ground shook ) my son seen it one night pushing through trees, we figured it to be 12 to 14 foot tall.. they do come in all sizes in Florida as well. 👣

I've hunted bear in Michigan since the late 60s. I've never once found a dead bear or heard anyone else has either.
