Absolutely fabulous I truly believe in using lovely things. If something is broken I have had the pleasure of using it. If I kept it in a cupboard and some how it was broken I would not have had the pleasure of using it. You a very wise lady.

This dinner set is beautiful and yes I would use it everyday! I have recently come to have my Grandmother's dinner set, nothing fancy but it is special. My grandparents passed away in 1987, I had no idea my Dad still had it. My Dad passed away in 2020 and when we sold his house I rediscovered the dinner set and brought it home.

Oh my, Marie-Anne, what a delight it is to go with you on some of your outings: signing the papers for the farmhouse, then having lunch; going to the fruit and veggie stalls; shopping for hats; even going out in the rain! Love it all.
About your beautiful new dishes; I don't know where to begin with my comments and questions. First, I will never again look at chipped dishes the same. I used to think they were to be hidden, and if there's just one chipped plate, it always had to be at 'Mom's place at table, to let everyone else have the intact ones. I will use a set of dishes, flaws and all, with love and pride.
Now, my question: if and when you use your beautiful found set of blue and white dishes for company, I know you'll get compliments over them. So, would you share with your guests the story of your 'find', and mention how you find them charming with the little flaws, or would you not mention that at all. (I would talk about it!)
Thank you so much for treating us as your special confidants!!

I believe that antiques are better put to use, as well.
My parents had an antiques store when I was a young girl, and when you explained the different stamps and markings, and that the plates are appliqued, it brought me back to when my folks taught me about different styles and marks on china, etc.!
I loved learning the different French names for the dishes!!

I have also bought creamer/sugar, silver meat platter that was engraved as a 25th anniversary gifts, and they were lovingly polished many times. Beautiful set but I think the oblong or oval dish is a meat dish and the small soupiere is a covered vegetables dish. The ravier is typically used for condiments like cornichons, onions, pickles and simular things. In English they are called pickle dishes.

Chipped or not, the plates are charming and have such character. What stories they could tell while in use one hundred years ago. What a great find. I have my great-grandmother's turkey platter, probably at least 125 years old. I've often wondered about the conversations around the dinner table.

Most of my dishes are vintage or antique. I find that they were better quality, I love their charm, and I prefer to buy secondhand because they’re better for the environment.
However, I was taught it was NOT safe to consume food from chipped dishes bc it can leak chemicals into the food. I still buy chipped dishes if I really, really love them, but I repurpose them as jewellery trays, plant pots, etc. So, broken items are usable, as long as they don’t come into contact with food/drink. I even took a class in kitsugi (Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with gold), but found that it’s far easier to just repurpose broken items.
Yours is a lovely set, so thanks for sharing. Xx

I have so many lovely dishes which were given to me by my ladies when I was a gardener. I use most of them and they all are special reminders of my wonderful ladies, many of who have passed on, and the stories they told of their younger days. For everyday I use the Johnson Brothers "Indies", brought over to Canada from England after the war, along with it's Sheffield silverplate cutlery. Nice reminders of all my 'substitute mums' :)

I just had success in drawing out the stains in an a favorite older porcelain dish. It did take 2.5 days of soaking in a paste, but Oxyclean worked where other recommendations did not. I wonder if the yellow stains on these beautiful dishes would also respond to Oxyclean? Enjoy seeing your deep appreciation of lovely old things. Thanks for teaching a bit of French too.

I don't have any French dinner ware but I was lucky enough to score a 72 piece Wedgewood "Edme" service, dating around 1940. It looks particularly good on a repurposed red French toile curtain that I use instead of a tablecloth! Merci beaucoup!

What a beautiful, charming service you have, and its beauty is timeless! It is so wonderful that you gave it a new life :) My parents and grandparents would use their dinner services on a daily basis all their lives. One is Sarregemines (tiny flowers), 2 Lunevilles (1 blue and white Jouy and the other hand painted flowers) and another Saint Clement (hand painted flowers), all made in Lorraine. I have so many beautiful, precious memories of those moments with my family! They've stayed in the family, for the most part, as well as my parents' Limoges service used on more special occasions. If only these services could tell us about everything they've seen, all the hands that have held them! They can't, but we still have lots of memories and/or can make new ones :) I love brocante and beside its charm, it is also very sustainable.

Beautiful dishes! Soup tureens are hard to find these days here in the U.S. I guess no one serves soup from the table anymore. Sad, really! I use my grandmother's china every day. The smaller sized plates and bowls are perfect! I have a new set but the dinner plates are the size of platters! Ugh! I use them only for defrosting meat in the microwave if I had forgotten to put it out ahead of time.
