How A More Casual ESO Playerbase Is Affecting The In-Game Economy 💰 Elder Scrolls Online Gold Guide

  • I think that we can all agree that the new gameplay features that have been released in the Elder Scrolls Online over the past few years have been inherently “casual” in nature. By casual, I mean that these activities are incredibly accessible to the kinds of ESO players that are not looking to sink too many hours into perfecting a certain build or play style. Anyone can summon a companion, complete some simple antiquity-related puzzles, and play some games of Tales of Tribute against novice NPCs and other players.
    Couple the more casual-friendly direction that ESO has taken these past few years with the player retention issue that it has, and you get a playerbase where the average player isn’t entirely capable of, or interested in, completing some of the more objectively difficult content that the game has to offer.
    As you might expect, the effects of the aforementioned situation have made for some pretty nice gold-making opportunities. In this video, we chat about how we should consider the effects of a more casual-leaning playerbase when looking to earn gold in ESO, and we examine ESO DLC dungeon and trial motifs as a means to support my proposed arguments. I hope that through this discussion, you can consider new modes of gameplay that you haven’t yet experienced, or, you can be better equipped when pricing and even flipping items in ESO.

    I love this game coming from years and years on WoW doing the same shit over and over and dealing with cut throat end game toxic environments and butchered lore over and over. People are friendlier here, there’s SOOOO much to do here, and i ABSOLUTELY love the fact that I can solo things, my husband and I recently had a baby and playing time is very, very limited but with how we left our characters we can SOLO a dungeon without a group!

      yeah, i think because it is a bit more casual than WoW "generally" is. it also is a better fit for people who have adult lives. be that work or kids or what ever.

    Arttea, always love your content. Fairly new player (7 months maybe) in ESO and gaming in general after being away from video gaming for over 15 years. Amazed at the new technological advances in gaming compared to my days when Zelda and Final Fantasy were the “awesome” games in the market. ESO has taken all avail time of gaming since I’ve started video gaming again and it’s videos like yours that enlightens/guides/educates the gamer with “sometimes” no clue of the intricacies the game has to offer. I thank you sincerely for that. I’m a PS NA console player. All methods of gold making you teach us about is truly appreciated always. Keep them tips coming. 🙌

    I've definitely noticed this myself. I was expecting it to be honest, the vets are getting tired and the game I believe is being marketed to new players and not rewarding long timers. It was only a matter of time before the skill level dropped. I always fake heal now (I slot heals too don't hate) and most of the time I'm doing 40-50% of the DPS. Almost every PUG is a carry now.

      I've noticed this as well, rolled a healer after finally switching to PC from Xbox and wasn't sure if it was just the PC community but it seems more like there's just more and more casual players playing who don't even have the experience to light attack weave yet.

I'm in your guild (which I love) and have been surprised at how selling just bits and bobs that I manage to collect has paid off. So my wife and I picked up ESO 3 months ago and are quite casual (somewhere in the 300-400 CP range now). There is so much to see and do, I am not sure the "new casuals" really care much about motifs. Scarcity definitely makes prices rise if there is demand, but if I don't know what I want or what is even available, then I am not going to be looking to buy. I have about a million gold now and have no idea what to spend it on. We do pay the 15 bucks a month, so we got free mounts, some outfits, got a free house from the quest and a bunch of inn rooms. Guess I will buy a house, but most of the cool furniture I have now I made (patterns from the seasonal events - really like the vampire stuff) or got from scrying. I play on the PC so the other platforms may be different.
    Everyone plays MMOS their own way, but the market you are used to may be changing more than you think.
    Thanks for the info and thought you put into this video. I'll subscribe and watch a few more for sure.

    Hey Arttea. Coming consel, PS, here. I completely agree with you on this. We are seeing it as well. My main guild runs normal trials onve a week, and they are having trouble getting enough people for it each week. My group that does Vet, tends to have to pug a couple or just run 9-10. As for my trading guild, that has been interesting. They have almost nightly autions and it is really interesting to watch and see what stuff goes for. As for myself, I am not into the trading game as much as I use to be. I am sitting on a nice 4.5 mill in the bank. Which for console is pretty good. Stuff I do list, I find myself have to drop the prices lower then what I use to just so they would have a chance. One item that I saw get hit really hard a couple of years back and has never really recovered are writs. Use to it was at least 1k a ticket. 2-3k a ticket on jewellrey. Now best not go above 500 a ticket and 100-200 on jewellrey. Motifs and style pages are pretty much a hell mary when listing them. Some times all of mine sell and sometimes they dont. Pop them back in for 1-5k less and sometimes they will move. Still love they game. Just having a hard time finding a reason to log in a lot now a days.

  • @JerNela
    @JerNela ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This also goes for some of the overland and public dungeons things. When Murkmire came out Scuttlebloom was going for 30k. The prices were supposed to go down but it seems that barely anyone is still farming those so I can easily list it for 80k (PC EU) and sell it.
    Same for the kitten parts from the Summerset public dungeon. The price on that one is slightly higher for what I sold duplicates for when I was farming to collect my own pieces.

    @Eloquence00 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video. I'm an end-gamer who has, traditionally, listed motifs relatively under-priced, simply because I was getting so many of them that they were clogging up my bank. Now though, I've been pricing a lot of them above even mid-price and many of them sell even quicker than when I used to put them at the lowest price.
    The price increase is the inevitable result of the large exodus of players after U35 and the bugs following it that stopped things like vHOF from being completable by traditional strats and the block bug that made a lot of end-game groups simply stop running entirely. Not only are some of the motifs simply out of reach for most players to get, but even if you are great at the game, you have to find a team of people who are willing and able to run the content in order to get them.
    I'm personally lucky enough to still have a group of people that consistently runs both trials and dungeons still, but I know a lot of people who were just breaking into the hard-mode content that quit because it was simply too hard to find groups willing to run with people who didn't know the content.

    • @Arttea
      @Arttea  ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are some great points that I didn't even mention in the video! Because that's so true - the fact that integral game mechanics (like blocking!) have not been functioning recently only pushes people further away from attempting difficult content that rewards motifs. 😩

  • @DustinHarms

    Really enjoyed the in-depth breakdown. I actually stopped playing, again, quite a while ago. I never hit the highest end of the game, but I'm a huge theorycrafter and enjoy crunching numbers and trying to at least play my character as well as possible, though I wouldn't say I'm "hardcore." Having said that, about 90% of the folks that I was playing with last time (that have also stopped playing) were not so much that way, more just kinda...throwing themselves at the keyboard and if they win, cool, if not, do something else.
    I do think it's great that ESO has these non-combat gameplay options. Oddly, at least in my case from the above experience, almost none of those casual players were even partaking in those things. I wish I understood the mentality, but it really seems like a lot more folks in the MMORPG genre are casual to the degree that any kind of resistance just ends up with folks leaving or disengaging with that content...and, of course, the game studios tend to want to keep people, so...yeah, naturally the game will change accordingly.
    The silver lining, I guess, is that there's a real distinguishing between someone that tries and someone that is just playing to spend some time slapping keys and hoping to get some kind of endorphin hit. And better yet, the former can actually leverage their proficiency for some kind of financial gain. So that's kind of cool.
    Anyway, always enjoy the video essays, even if I don't play. You're a fantastic creator and communicator.

    • @Arttea
      @Arttea  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah! I think that the kinds of opportunities that have emerged in light of this sharp contrast between the ways in which players prefer to play the game have been really neat to observe (and indulge in, of course 🤑💰)!

    I never flipped a specific item successfully, until now. The recent Jester Event item "Scrap of Minstrel's Cloth" (10 for an outfit) was wild. Flipped around 200 - 300 of them and made about 40mil profit. Bought another 100 or so at the last minute (people were getting rid of them like crazy as the final hours of the event came to a close) and will keep them, assuming the price will rise, now that there is no way to get more of them (until next year, if ever). And my guilds were real happy, gave them millions in tax, simply because the item was priced so high on every sale. 70mil in one guild (30mil or so was profit) etc... and 3.5% goes to the guild as tax (4.5% is deleted as tax, too, including the 1% listing fee). Just a wild time.

    DLC dungeon Motifs have been increasing in value for sure. Although I think it also needs to be said that their value was deflated considerably due to the ESO anniversary event (the effect of which has finally subsided) and also now becoming inflated just by the sheer volume of new players who do not have them collected. My theory is that not only have we seen a reduction in the number of veteran players, we're also seeing a surge in new players from ESO expanding into the Chinese and South American player markets, as Simplified Chinese and Spanish translations have recently been added to the game. Many of these new players don't even have access to guides (of any kind) in their native language, or may not be able to afford the subscription fee to access all DLC content.

    I feel attacked. This is me. I basically live in trials and dungeons and sell motifs generally for the quick sale price. I'm in two GH progs and a GS prog. I have crafted well over 60+ Welkynar style pages and always have SS pages amongst others. Some of these pages will sit in the shop at even fair prices, the welkynar chest is the hot item out of CR but would I rather it sit in the shop for 2 weeks for an extra 100k or repost a new one with a quick sale, I still ask myself this. I'm also ok with flippers sniping some things if i'm not willing to put in the work that week. I am awful at this though and my bank space dictates these choices often too but you are 100% correct and I kinda needed to hear this, ty.

I also just think that because the gear is pretty obsolete there, there are not as many players running through MoL these days, which would explain why those motifs are heckin pricey!

  • @andreasraziel
    @andreasraziel ปีที่แล้ว

    Part of what drives the price up is tamriel Trade Centre. Players will post things for sale at high prices as a way to store an item. Because it is sometimes cheaper to pay posting fees.

      Ah yeah I have seen people list items for pretty crazy amounts (hundreds of thousands or millions when the item is worth no more than say 100k). I basically hadn't played eso for about a yr or so besides getting those daily logins cause i just gotta log in for my reward lol Previously when i was very active i never was able to get into end game content like vet trials because my dps sucked and didn't have the "meta" gear. I was never planning to be the best player either cause i really didn't want to put in the time to spend hours of parsing to get better dps numbers when i could be out and about doing other things that are actually enjoyable and just play the game. I recently started to play again the last couple months and just doing my casual things basically til i get bored again and take another break lol

      Haha I get that, the FOMO is REAL with those daily rewards 😬And yeah that's fair - I actually HATE parsing (I'm sure endgame PvE sweats will be able to tell any time they watch me haphazardly carry out a rotation) but fortunately, I've still been able to get some excellent vet HM trial clears (where I pulled my own weight!) despite the fact! What little practice I did on the trial dummy paired with my DLC dungeon diving experiences with friends over the years really paid off. I also don't run particularly meta stuff, I mean, I'm a bow/bow stamblade heh. Anyways, just mentioned that to let you know that endgame content is totally possible even for those that don't prefer to hump dummies on the regular!

  • @Epilus
    @Epilus ปีที่แล้ว

    I wonder if this is why I've seen the Dro M'athra motifs going to what I would consider stupidly high prices (over 100K), since to me that trial isn't nearly as difficult as the ones that came after. I've also noticed that older quest daily motifs like the ones from Gold Coast sell pretty well because no one is really doing that content

    • @Arttea
      @Arttea  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yeah absolutely! I'd wager that MoL isn't ran as often because none of the gear there is really "meta" - I'd say it's all fairly obsolete now. So there aren't a lot of players that are interested in completing it, save for maybe to prog it for the vMoL skin. In light of this, the prices of the motifs that drop from MoL are rightfully worth quite a bit! And that's a good point about the daily motifs as well - some zones get forgotten about, so the motifs from their dailies are worth $$$!

    Motifs are reqd for the style master achievement, which is reqd for master crafter. The biggest difference I have noticed over many years is the way dungeons are run. Now on normal you either get very low lvls or very high lvls. Vet dungs are now anybodies. Fake tanks and healers was always a problem, but now no one cares it seems due to the lack of peeps doing dungs now. Also the lack of anyone knowing the mechs of vet dungs now is real let down making the event almost meaningless and less enjoyable. You are right about IC as it is empty.

    I'm curious after four years of playing what you still find to spend gold on? I played for a while when the game first started, but didn't get that far, I think my highest level character was about Lv.34, although, to be fair, levelling took substantially longer then. I returned to the game about 18 months ago and in that time I've bought every house, every motif on two characters, every recipe including furniture, most runeboxes and style pages. I make about 5-10M gold per week currently on PC NA almost exclusively from doing writs on 18 characters and selling the materials, master writs that I don't want and getting more materials from the survey reports. I'm already running out of things to spend gold on, other than getting motifs on every other character. I have no idea what veteran players spend it on or why they may want to farm gold.

    • @Arttea
      @Arttea  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of endgame players (once they've learned all of the motifs and satisfied their housing addiction) tend to spend their millions on crown items, by purchasing them through a crown-trading service like TCE! That is what I used to do with the millions that I made every week. These days, I pitch in about 15 million of my own gold each week to help fund my community's guild trader! Otherwise, I'd continue buying crown items with my gold, like those damn crown crates haha

    • @Neofolis
      @Neofolis ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Arttea Wow, speediest reply ever. I suspected the crown store may be the answer. I find that I get more than enough crowns from subscription to buy everything I want and on the odd occasion that I want something from a crown crate, I usually have enough seals of endeavor for it. Obviously without a subscription or other access to crowns, things would be very different, but I don't think I'd enjoy the game enough to want to play it without a subscription. The thought of playing on one character and using all of the others for storage isn't too appealing.

    I don't do dungeons very often because people are scary. The rewards don't feel worth the effort it takes to put up with people who zoom ahead without a care for slowpokes like me who actually choose skills and gear because they seem fun rather than research what the current meta build might be this quarter.
    PvP is scary, because I'm slow and panic when I get attacked which means I spend 90% of the time spitting dirt, and it's not fun. There's no learning curve in PvP; you either meta or die. I didn't start playing the game to spend 90% of my time doing online research on *how* to play the game.
    I don't sell things in guild traders anymore because to be in a guild I have to be online consistently and some days (or weeks) I just don't feel like playing, and it's annoying to be kicked for inactivity. Crawling back hat in hand and asking to be re-added is awkward. People are scary.
    I also... don't really play to earn gold? Idk man, gold is just a necessary evil because so many of the things I could do myself take forever to gather. I'd happily craft any furnishings and gear for myself, but that also means that I'm spending most of my time harvesting to get the furnishing materials I need. Heartwood is rare, man.
    So... idk. I'd rather run free through the flowery meadows of Summerset and catch butterflies than crawl through sweaty, cramped tunnels with a bunch of people who want me there even less than I want to be around them. If that makes me casual... I guess I'm a casual.

Friends won't mind what sets you're running or how you chose to run through a dungeon, and they may even be willing to show you the ropes of pvp! I totally agree though, pvp has an incredibly steep learning curve, and most of the population is either very skilled at pvp, or they are really struggling with it. I'd also offer that there are some communities/guilds out there that are pretty lax when it comes to requirements - whether it be experience in pvp/pve needed to join those kinds of events, or sales and activity requirements needed to remain in a trading guild etc. Finding those havens makes the world of a difference when playing ESO casually

I mean I can be out in the middle of nowhere in basically any zone and will still stumble upon someone so people are playing. Our prices just vary so so much. Ratio wise I’d say it’s pretty even though considering we can’t sell for as much as P.C. since people aren’t making as much, if that makes sense.

    I've played on and off since beta, and have always been primarily into the solo PvE stuff. I'm part of the crowd who came from love of previous solo Elder Scrolls games with no prior MMO experience. A dirty casual, as the sweaty meta PvPers would say. In the past few years I've finally started significantly participating in group PvE content and improving my character builds, and also tried a few other popular MMO's for comparison. Overall I still like ESO best, and solo PvE activities best. The changed I've noticed most in the past couple of years is player attitude devolvement. It's always been a mixed bag, but I felt it was overall more neutral and cooperative until this year. This year such a large percentage of normal dungeon queue groups (meant for low level and casual players) are dominated by a Sweaty fake tank who treats it like a competitive race to the finish rather than a cooperative group activity. Seeing those inconsiderate pieces of **** ruin the experience for newbies (and me) so often lately has made me want to participate with other people even less than I did before. And there has been so much tantrum-throwing by streamers over things that were minor or only affected a small percentage of people, with cries of 'game is dying!' that I've just HAD IT with a large chunk of the community and just want to go back in my hermit hole. I play to destress, not get more stressed, so being able to engage with new areas, quests, and items each year without the frustration of extreme difficulty or having to deal with other people (potentially jerks) has been a key factor in my staying. I'm enjoying the price increases on some of the stuff I farm though!

      Yeah that's fair. I tend to stick to playing with friends and guildies and I feel that that has served me well in the sense that I haven't run into too many unfavorable situations. I've definitely heard my fair share of horror stories from viewers in my comments section about the kinds of experiences that they are having upon grouping up with pugs to run content, and I'm really sorry to hear it. :/ I always figured that I hear more of these accounts of really unpleasant dungeon runs and whatnot in recent times because the size of my channel has grown quite a bit in the past year and a half, but it could also very well be because the likeliness of these incidents has increased recently. The prospect of that being a reality is really unfortunate :/ As always, I totally recommend playing with friends or trusted guildies if you're looking to complete group content in a manner that vibes with you Doing so has definitely kept me sane over the years haha

      Im one of your faketanks who solo tushes the dungeons and is gone before u arrive in the first boss room and i can explain to you why. 1. Im a pvp player yet to be able to play pvp in this game you need to farm pve sets because thats the choice zos Made. These dungeones are boring as fuck tho and need no skill at all. So im not gonna take 5 min on it just cuz some guy wants to waste time. U might say why not go into the solo dungeon then. Well zos gives way better loot and xp for random dungeons then for soloing the dungeon. The reason im queuing tank is tank takes 5 seconds to find a group while dd takes Minutes. And again u dont need a tank cuz theyre so ez. So ye the reason is zos forces me into pve and then makes it so boring that i dont want to waste any time on it. So thank them. Also mate it has nothing to do with sweaty the normal dungeones are so ez u cant sweat through them. So from your perspective its a group activity. But from my perspective its something i dont want to do but have to do for something i want to do. So for me it indeed is just a race to the finish. Also why u call these ppl piece of shit for valuing your time ? I would call you that for not valuing my time and taking forever to complete boring content.

    What maybe also a reason is that there arent as many dungeon and trial motifs on the market place is that for example someone like myself who gets their gold from carries. I cannot be arsed to sell motifs for 50/80/300k. I dont even take the time to do it. Have money to blow and it takes to much effort to put stuff on traders. (this was not meant to brag this is just how I feel dont kill me)

    • @Arttea
      @Arttea  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a solid point. I'm sure motif money is peasant change in comparison to the fat stonks you rake in from selling carries! Not worth the hassle of giving a damn about trading when you're already rolling in it eh? ;p

    I don't know if I'm a casual player and don't have time for vet dungeons runs. I was on my magisorc healer and it took 5 hours to do 1 pledge dudgeon on vet with 2 other guildies(fake tank pick up). That experience killed vet content for me. Now that I have a decent DPS templar I wouldn't mind trying again just for motif farming. I love housing and pve content. I only go to Cyrodil for treasure maps and keep the telvar from the free login rewards in my bank. I put in maybe 30-40 hours a week. I farm furnishing plans for me and a few friends. I drop off the extras in a guild bank and sell the hella expensive ones.(One day the enchanted elsweyr brazier will be mine). I've done really well on some of the events and made what I consider serious coin(5mil at most but boy as that nice!)

      Ooo good luck with the enchanted elsweyr brazier farm! And oh yeah, events bring some absolutely amazing gold-earning opportunities to the game! Sorry to hear about that dungeon experience - I've definitely been there before. I was in a vCoA 2 run a few years ago that took hours because my groupmates were nowhere near equipped to take on that content (one of the dps was dual-wielding a sword and board, and the other one was dead for 99% of the run somehow). Safe to say that experience depleted my interest in PvE content for a hot minute I'm glad I gave it another shot though - it is much better if you can run with an entire group of friends or guildies for sure!

      @@Saradominstr considering how awful the endgame culture is in ESO, it doesn’t surprise me people choose casual play. I know many talented players that could do HM dlc trials, but choose not to because they enjoy their family guild events and casual play. Of course the lack of rewards hurts the endgame community, but really what has made it unattractive for casual players is the culture.

    • @largemouthbass355

      @@Saradominstr ESO's Casual community is very warm and welcoming and helpful. The endgame world is a bit of a mixed bag. In some instances, they are helpful but very disconnected from rest of the player base.
      I think PVE content is easy, and it should be as easy as it is. Overland content attracts players that are more casual. If the content was harder, Youd just have less of those players, Not better players. As a newer player myself I would hate to be bogged down by overland content when your spending time trying to get caught up to the endgame community. (I started HM trials a few months ago, and my start date was April 4th) ESO is Overwhelming for new players! and I think that is the problem with the game not keeping newer players. Instead of investing on new systems like the card game, I think they need to make some content for more variety, Like 2 Man Arenas, or even 6-man Dungeons. That would be a good way of breaking the ice for players going from 4 man to 12-man trials where it's an entirely mode of play.

    I just came back to the game, and I know nothing. After several years, I thought I had plenty of gold to craft some jewelry for a friend, until I saw chromium plates on the market for 330 t0 340K. I was shocked, and I told my friend it was going to be epic. I had 11, and I was debating whether I should get in a trading guild, or hold on to them. I'm just a casual player, but I'm older than dirt. My arthritic hands won't let me keep up with you young people.

      Ah yeah, I can only imagine how much of a shock it would be to come back to the game and take a look at the value of some of the items in your inventory! Material prices have been pretty stable for the past while (some have even decreased in value slightly after the mass exodus of players in U35 and U36) so it may not be a bad idea to sell them for some cash if you need it! If you don't want to bother with trading guilds, you could see about selling your wares in zone chat as well - just be sure to get an amount of gold that you're happy with, as zone chat can be quite brutal when it comes to selling and buying wares.

    Totally agree with you as far as it goes, but I would also like to put forward the theory that the end game is being killed by the vet players themselves.
    ESO community is very welcoming mostly except for vet dungeons and trials. The predominant attitude appears to be "don't come here unless you know what you're doing".
    Unfortunately, even if you watch the TH-cam vids, over and over again, you're not going to remember how to run a hard dungeon - the only way is doing it and making mistakes. The mechanics on some are very complicated and, you're going to screw up a lot before you get it. The unwelcoming responses put a lot of people off dipping their toe in the water - knock on effect, you can't find groups for vet dungeons.
    Having said that, every cloud - I'd certainly be taking financial advantage of the situation.
