When I was in middle school in Roanoke, Va in like 1993 I did a little report on the accumulation of gases produced by the forest that gives the Blue Ridge Mountains their blue tint. I can tell you, yeah, it was a lot less pretty back then in the mountains. Anyway, this kinda meant a lot to me. I really appreciate the work you do and that of all the PBS TH-cam channels! Keep it up!

Chilean here. In Santiago you have a great panoramic of the Andes Mountains. They look blue too, but not due to plants, they are mostly arid. When is about to rain, or has just rained, they look deeply blue. Once, I was traveling to Argentina by bus, on a rainy day that soon became a snowy day. The mountains looked deep blue at short distance.
Fun fact: In Shenandoah National Park (a part of the blue ridge) there was an overlook from which you used to be able to see the Lincoln Memorial. That's over 75 miles away. Currently though it is only very rarely visible then the atmospheric conditions are just right. The last confirmed time someone saw the memorial from Shenandoah was 2016

Interesting. I am currently reading a book about a small woodland in the UK by Richard Fortey that discusses how Yew trees were wiped out in Britain in order to make war bows. What you're looking at here is second and third growth forest that was entirely clear cut in the 19th and 20th centuries. We're protecting it somewhat for now, but as our population explodes it will surely be needed, and cut, again.
i live near the blue ridge mountains in northern virginia and im honestly so used to the mountains looking like this that i really dont even realize theyre blue anymore

a bit of taxonomic confusion between the blue ridge (virginia) and it's great smokies (north carolina) continuation. Yes, it's one geographic entity but there are two toponyms.
Reminds me that you can finally see the Washington Monument from Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. You could see it on clear days when the park opened in the 1930s, but pollution prevented that for a lot of years. Last year on an exceptionally clear day someone was able to spot downtown Washington DC from one of the overlooks on Skyline Drive.
Its kind of the same deal here in Colorado in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. They use to be super blue-ish purple from a distance. Now because of several issues; 1. the major population boom occuring here. 2. From what I understand, alot of pollution drifting over from Asia, and 3. Massive, chronic forest fires that has wiped alot of our forests out.....its pretty much just a white smoggish haze.
Been busy learning about cosmic life with Matt. While we were hanging out he suggested I visit you and learn about terrestrial life and world it lives on. While I have passion for string based concept, quantum mechanics, and astrophysics I feel like we're amongst friends when I'm hanging with with the Space Time gang. They seem trustworthy and I'm willing to listen to a recommendation from good company like those guys! :)

You get that blue haze off Australian eucalypt forests too. The mountains inland from Sydney were named the Blue Mountains for that reason.
