The yellow threat token that I kept referring to as radiation is NOT radiation, it's contamination. Contamination is a kind of damage that is harder to heal.
I was pleasantly surprised how manageable it all is. It is a very slick system with easy rules with lots of depth. I too love the fact that there is so much variation from game to game. The rulebook is well laid out and you can get into the game very quickly as well.
I love it, went all in. Fantastic gameplay great story and as you say Daniel everything comes in one box and there’s enough space to sleeve your cards. Does sometimes remind of Runebound.
I'm looking forward to getting this one on the table. I'm also glad to hear they're working on more open-ended exploratory scenarios as well, that big map board is practically screaming for a rogue-like exploration mode just as you mentioned. If it's not too difficult for people to make their own scenarios as well, this game could potentially have a really long shelf life.
I just finished my first game, tutorial solo mission. I can clearly see all the pros and cons that the game gets from reviewers. The rules are pleasantly streamlined, the artworks are nice, the effort they put into the storytelling aspect is great, just like all the unique artworks. I'm actually fine that the combat is kept so brief and streamlined. It's true though that the game can be very punishing and it definitely lacks ways of luck mitigation/dice manipulation, making it feel more random and potentially frustrating. The worst part for me was the time pressure the game puts on me, it feels really odd and distracting. While playing the tutorial mission, I had to keep moving forward whenever I can or I would not be able to visit all question locations. My question here is: Are all the scenarios creating this high pressure ? I wish the game would allow the players to breathe and explore, similar to Eldritch Horror.
Excellent, I'm now excited to get this to the table and I understand the kickstarter stress. I never back a game with the intention to sell it, but I have had a few kickstarters show up and they went straight to ebay, because I know there are not going to hit the table soon and they are just too big.
@@TheDungeonDive Agreed, when I first got into the hobby 10 years ago, I didn't understand all of the hate towards games rated a 6 or 7 on BGG. The problem is board games can take up a lot of space, and sometimes good just doesn't cut it.
I spy Dragon Strike on your shelf. I think that was my first boardgame that introduced me into the hobby so many years ago. I just late pledged for a copy of Waste Knights and am excited to get it :)
I am a little bit concerned because of the linearity you mentioned and the little content in terms of available scenarios. I thougt it would be more like Dungeon Degenerates with the different setting. Maybe I should try Fallen Land until my german edition will arrive. Btw, thx a lot for your thorough first impression.
The board reminded me immediately of the old Wizards Quest game (just colours used, not theme). Game looks good. Maybe a Dungeon Degenerates (choose your own adventure) meets Mad Max? Would be a solo game for me so I'll have a bit more of a think about if there's enough there for me.
Wondering if you can try the competitive scenarios by playing both sides and have it be enjoyable. Play last night on earth like that and enjoy it but only game I do that with. It just drives me nuts to have 2 scenarios and gobs of text I’ll never have the chance to experience!
@@misomiso8228 yep, but I mean in order to reply we need to sum each last number of each scenario...and maybe it's not important enough to give you the answer :-)
If you want a hex crawl in the same genre, check out my favourite game Fallen Land, which is on Kickstarter with it's 2nd edition... Also here's a video I did of it. th-cam.com/video/t2eRwJucd7o/w-d-xo.html
It sounds like it might be worth trying the old Runebound 2nd ed solo timer that Mr Skeletor came up with, back in the day. It works fairly well in enforcing some momentum for a solo adventure game run but allows you to regulate it to taste if you want to do more exploration. boardgamegeek.com/filepage/49058/runebound-solo-rules
I think after that little chat here, I should be more specific why I sold it. First thing is, that I was looking for a game just like Fallout. I had high hopes for Waste knights.... I do enjoy storybooks, I am an old P&P RPG player/veteran and I like post apocalyptic games and settings. So everything should be fine for Waste knights. During the first game, I quickly got disappointed! The encounters, which are most of the time are enemies ( I would have been happy if there were any other types of encounters, like people in danger, traveling vendors or so... ), could get so strong, that you don't stand a chance against them. They beat you up and you have to heal up in preparation for the next possible enemy. If you are unlucky, you are stuck in a circle of getting beat up and healing up. In Fallout on the other side, you see the enemies coming and you could avoid them. The max HP are much higher. You do have rerolls for bad luck... And it also makes a difference which sort of weapon you use ( ranged and close combat weapons ). Then there is the time pressure. I house ruled more time to take away the pressure, but I fell into the circle I mentioned before and time pressure was back again. While I was reading the story in the book, I was asking myself: "Why I am doing this? This has nothing to do with my mission!" 🤨 And I didn't have found any side missions. But since you have a strict time limit, there would be no time for side missions. Take another look at Fallout! During my last game I had 3 or 4 side missions opened up. And since played solo with two characters, I had enough time to do them all. To be fair: Fallout could be very long and time consuming but that's okay for me. The final point, that killed the game for me, was one enemy I encountered. An enemy that could only be wounded with one handed weapons! The moment I encountered that enemy, my knight was equipped with a two handed rifle. The rules don't allow you to change equipment during a fight! I'm okay with that. But that means: Shooting the enemy with a pistol is working and causing damage but shooting the enemy with a rifle is not working! So I had to fight this specific enemy with bare hands. Guess who got beat up again. Who is coming up with such an idea? There is no thematic explanation for this! The game could be really awesome! But it needs more balancing in my opinion. Add more encounters that are "normal" people. Animals that you could decide to hunt or maybe follow there tracks to find something you might need. The developers seemed to have one idea which was: "The Wasteland is dangerous!" and that's all?! Look at Fallout, you could play cards with some children in a settlement. That's an amazing encounter. I love that. The world in waste knights could be so much more... People on BGG came up with ideas to avoid enemies with negotiations. They developed "normal" encounters and put them into the download section. Sure I could house rule the game to a point that the game is fun for me. But I don't want to. I payed money for the game, so it should be good from the start. Well.... I will wander the wasteland in fallout again. With both expansions, it's a amazing game that I enjoy solo and with friends. 😉
I was a first day backer for this and I am extremely disappointed in it. The only really good thing is the design of the board and the art. Having played 3 scenarios and used 6 characters I am not inclined to play again. The missions are extremely linear, the combat is far too simple, the writing is awful, you get no freedom to explore which is a waste, the rule book is a joke - I found loads more rules in the adventure book after getting half of the rules wrong. If the story telling was great then the game play flaws would be forgiven but each mini mission is either read some badly wriiten fluff which makes little sense or conduct a test with a binary success / fail chance. I actually got all the way to the end of an adventure and did one final test, with no way to mitigate the result and was told YOU HAVE FAILED THE ADVENTURE. How satisfying! The choices are minimal and once you’ve played a scenario once there is no point in playing it again. I could go on. Basically the makers have not even met the story telling / sense of exploration promised. Don’t play this - play Ian Livingstone’s Fighting Fantasy book - Freeway Fighter from the 80’s or Joe Dever’s Freeway Warrior series of gamebooks.
I know this is a some what different genre but somehow gives me feeling of dungeon degenerates. Could you recommend to someone who loves dungeon degenerates?

The creator said on the BGG forums that they're coming out with an open world way of playing variant.

It's a real problem, especially for people, like me, with very limited space.

I like it as a solo game, but also want to play it as a 2-player game. I think the down time would be too long with any more.

You probably could if you’re able to “forget” certain things. I’ve played games like that before.
This game looks amazing! How many entries are there in the the Choose your own adventure book?
it depends of the scenario you choose.

Yeah. I’ve reviewed it and just did more coverage on it in a recent video.
Is this theme kind of like Mad Max but without his car ?
There are cars in the game, and one of the scenarios is basically the Road Warrior.
Cool !

This or Fallout (with Atomic Bonds)?
Fallout.

Kind of? DD is way more involved, and with less reading from a book. It feels less scripted.
