Hey I love the vlogs. I’m currently in my last stretch of nursing school and I have been heavily thinking about OR nursing but have been discouraged by professors and have rarely found anyone who works in the OR. What are the steps you believe one should take to get in the OR?
Thank you so much!! I think if you are sure you want to work in the OR, then try looking for an OR residency when you start looking for jobs. These are usually found in the hospital. However, if you aren’t able to find an OR residency or aren’t sure if you want to work in the OR, I would honestly get some kind of hospital experience because it will be a great foundation for you as a nurse starting out. OR nursing is so different from normal nursing and you don’t get to understand medications and how to care for certain diseases processes like you would if you get hospital experience. You could work in the hospital for a bit and then try transferring into OR nursing. A lot of times they want to see that you’ve had some hospital experience before working in the OR. I hope this helps!
