    A live performance, entirely on the Ableton Push 2 and the MIDI Fighter Twister.
    I tend to make music completely out of the box, focusing on hardware. The Ableton Push 2 and DJ Tech Tools MIDI Fighter Twister combo gives a great deal of that tactile hardware experience, allowing you to actually perform with software. The DAW world also comes with other major advantages: variety in sound types, unlimited effects, and fast and flexible routing with no cables. But the disadvantages are also clear: having unlimited options can lead to choice paralysis, and a DAW that's built to do anything doesn't do any one aspect of performance particularly well. I love the constraints of hardware design, their philosophy, whereas on a computer I have to make more of those philosophical choices for myself. Ultimately, it was more work but I'm very happy with the results.
    Written in fragments over the last few weeks, performed live, and processed with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

    I totally feel you on the choice paralysis that comes with working in a DAW. I usually end up just tweaking a filter envelope for two hours straight or something like that. Fantastic jam, though. Really appreciate the live performance aspect. Awesome build up and great energy.

    3:21. Bliss kicks in, and drives the sad away.
    And really, thank you for the horns. That touched it off just right.

    Awesome jam, and great insight into your process with the comments.
    I’m actually looking to buy a MIDI Fighter Twister to complement my Push 2 (to enable more robust dubbing capabilities, by being able to autmate parameters across different channels), so this was a great clip to watch.

    ummmm midi fighter is good but the price is not worth it, but very good video

    man i like your videos. I’m watching them in order to have an idea of what it would be like for me to play, a whole live set, using this kid of controllers. And this is my idea of doing it, by launching clips and creating transitions with macros. One thing tho, could i do that just with the midi fighter in your opinion, or is it best to you ableton’s push? Cause you know, there’s a big price difference

    • @JayHosking
      @JayHosking  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you had a computer on stage, you could use the MIDI Fighter Twister for macro changes. You would still need something to launch clips, but even something like a Launchpad would do the trick. Would end up significantly more affordable than a Push. And thanks!

    Gonna be honest, I wasn't feeling this one as much at first--the main synth was nicely mixed, but the piano pluck track got a bit stale considering how prominent it was, and it in general reminded me of my own frustrations with producing enough variation in daw tracks. BUT then it got to 3:58 and shit dude, you really hit a groove there. That is definitely something to put into the vault to revisit later.

      Addition: forgot to mention that the percussion at 1:06 was really nice. That muted cowbell type thing.
      3:19 was a nice transition as well. Had a colder feeling to it, as opposed to 3:58 which felt warmer. I like the contrast.

    Superb. How is the Push 2 raised so the MFT is of the same height? It looks flush with the Push 2

    The MFT seems to be the new thing. I wish NI would make something like a Kore 2 but with the NKS interface that is on their pricier keyboards and Maschine controllers.

    Nice. I am on a box hiatus. I used to perform with Abe, but my problem was that my performance sets would become too complicated. Then I had a meltdown where my set wouldn’t play and I just stood there. So I’m working on some combination of - get this - Deluge, Mpc live, black box and octa. Plus some synths. I’m taking the time given to me in this pandemic to evaluate each of these. The octa is all in , just for scenes and fader. But I’m surprised at how much I’m enjoying the mpc. I hated it at first. Just getting to know the D.

    • @JayHosking
      @JayHosking  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hear you. The Octatrack is unreal, probably my favourite centrepiece for a hardware setup. And the new MPCs were a pleasant surprise for me as well! I don't think I'll be spending much time using DAWs, but it's always nice to go back and feel that lack of constraints.

    • @HIFI1965
      @HIFI1965 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JayHosking I’m surprised about how good things sound out of the mpc. I figured out that I can midi map my launch control to the sbmixes and then save it as a template....then all I have to do is route pads and programs to the sub mixes.

      @@JayHosking Ive been hot for that Mashine + you wielded so effortless and with such ease - if it could manage 8ish sequenser tracks, use my little altarboy, my OVox Vocal ReSynthesis and maybe my melda plugins, its just the machine (no pun) for me - whats youre take on that ? By the way, i gave myself a Zoia , Julianne Choruspedal, and a Typhon for Chritmess - and ....just wow - that Julianne from Walrus , is .....something else !

    I really don't get the MIDI fighter stuff. 16 controls with some lights for £250? And it doesn't even have normal MIDI out. What am I missing about these things?

    • @JayHosking

      The appeal to me was having endless encoders with visual feedback that tells you where the knob is currently set. Plus you can set knob presses as a completely second set of parameters. Plus it's just knobs and nothing else that I won't use in a good sized profile. Plus it just worked without setting anything up or using any extra software.
