The first virtual edition of Broadway Backwards provided an exuberant, exhilarating and emotional evening of performances on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, raising support for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center.
The online event, which debuted March 30, 2021, and streamed for four days, explored how the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic has specifically affected the LGBTQ community. The show will feature Jay Armstrong Johnson as an isolated New Yorker who hallucinates a fantastical journey guided by a late night television host, portrayed by Jenn Colella.
The virtual show opened in pandemic New York City, where a young man named Billy (Jay Armstrong Johnson) makes his way through a slush-laden winter day. Following him on his commute through the city were visions of Stephanie J. Block, Deborah Cox and Lea Salonga, performing a present-day version of Dear Evan Hansen’s “Waving Through A Window.” As he asks the divas in his mind, “Is anybody waving back at me?,” Billy distracts himself from his isolation with wine, prescription medication and an imaginary late-night television show called Up All Night With Colella.
Hosted by Jenn Colella, Up All Night With Colella guides the theatre-loving Billy through a late night deep dive of showtunes, including memorable numbers from previous editions of Broadway Backwards.
The performance concluded with a star-studded version of “You Will Be Found,” also from Dear Evan Hansen. This song featured performances by Amy Adams, James Monroe Iglehart, Cheyenne Jackson, L Morgan Lee, Raymond J. Lee, Telly Leung, Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Ruthie Ann Miles, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Jessie Mueller, Kelli O’Hara, Karen Olivo, Bernadette Peters, Sis and Elizabeth Stanley with special appearances by Debbie Allen, Matt Bomer, Brenda Braxton, Len Cariou, Glenn Close, Loretta Devine, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Cherry Jones, Aasif Mandvi, Michael McElroy, Javier Muñoz, Jim Parsons, Eve Plumb, Roslyn Ruff and Tony Yazbeck.
Creator Robert Bartley returned as writer and director for this virtual version of the show. He was joined by Mary-Mitchell Campbell as music supervisor, Ted Arthur as music director and Eamon Foley as director of photography and video editor. Joshua Buscher-West joined as associate director, Nick Connors as orchestrator, Benedict Braxton-Smith as music producer and audio engineer, Matt Kraus as sound designer and Samantha Rodriguez as costume designer.

This literally made me bawl. Dear Evan Hansen has made me bawl more times than I can count. I did not expect to react like this. I watched it live when it aired and I was a hot blubbering mess. I even donated my last $10 to the fundraiser because when I was coming out as trans as a late teen, the Attic Youth Center in Philadelphia saved my life. And I want kids elsewhere to have what I had. Thank you for this.

In the context of the story in Dear Evan Hansen (spoilers omitted), this song has always felt… terribly sad. It reminds me of a very touching video submitted to the Trevor Project ("it gets better") by a young teen… who died by suicide very shortly after posting it. I'm omitting a link out of respect for privacy, but my gods, it's heart wrenching. In the musical, Evan himself knew that the chorus of this wasn't true. So this song feels not genuinely hopeful (except from those who've not been through it), but more like a desperate self deception born of grief. Which is more sad than I can express.

Hi I'm the T in the LGBTQ+ and let me just say that this video had me crying so hard like a baby.......last year was a complete disaster for me due to everything shutting down and not being able to see my friends and it caused me to feel lonely and I ended up spiraling down into a dark hole that I couldn't get out of and it caused me to have suicidal thoughts but this song "You Will Be Found" got me out of my funk because it reassured me that I'm not alone even when I think I am......I keep this song on repeat like all the time to remind myself that Im never alone......so thank you for this amazing and very emotional video ❤💛💚💙💜💋😭😍

@@kianam6192 I have the original version saved on my favourites already. :P But I gotta be honest...I prefer this one.
Also super bummed they made the original video private. I knew it was gonna happen so I must've listened to the whole show like 30 times before they did. XD

I was fortunate enough to see this on Broadway right after Ben Platt won the Tony. I legitimately cried from the first song to The last song and I think I cried the hardest during the song. I still can't listen to the soundtrack without bursting into tears.

Other than cry my eyes out with this all-star at home version of You Will Be Found, the high school drama club kid, who played a disciple name Therese, in Godspell, sang along with everyone in this video. I'm glad that I donated whatever I can to this cause, because I feel terrible that the Broadway community all over the world is suffering financially, because of the Covid 19 pandemic. Plus I want to work with everyone in this video on the Broadway stage after the pandemic is over! I miss those theatre days of not only projecting & increase the volume of my voice on stage, but I miss having my cast members & me saying, "Break a leg!". Break a leg Broadway Cares in raising money to help all in the community get whatever they need.

Hey, y'all.....I'm the "G" in this group....and this moved me so much. Was confused initially thinking to myself that I had seen these videos before....but the way they incorporated past performances from this fundraiser into this year's fundraiser, given the pandemic, was wonderfully done. Poor editor! I think Jenn Collela was perfect for the narrator, MC, voice of reason/hope, was great. I have looked for the name of the man, young man, suffering through this, as many of us have, though there is something particularly unique living in a city, which is my hometown, with 16 million people and feeling completely alone which resonated with me for many reasons...as I have experienced that, myself. I'd like to know who he was. Also, perhaps because I live in Italy, now....for 10 years and been out of the loop except for what I read online and in the TIMES, I need to ask what Eve Plumb was doing there. Anyone? Has she come back from her self imposed isolation back to acting? Just curious. The number above, of course, I knew, as I have heard it used in so many videos over the past 2 years, especially, for so many different reasons. One, in particular, was made for anti bullying week, in the UK where a young boy who had been bullied, violently, solely for loving theatre, singing...and a movement began to help him and has spread to, well, everywhere, #cheepupcharlie......a video was made with West End performers which is equally moving. Have heard this song in English, German, French, Italian ("Sarai Ritrovato" is the name I gave it in Italian), Dutch, etc. Watch it. It is beautiful. There is, I believe, nothing worse than knowing you are inches away from millions of people but feeling alone. Another sensation I am familiar with. Anyway, loved it! Peace to you all....remain safe, vaccine and mask. - Gary, Ferriere, Italy....via NYC

Here’s my second comment on this video. Yes! When he called Bernadette Peters “Diva!”, yes I so agree with him that she’s one of my Broadway queens, but for me, my fave Broadway diva, my Queen, idol & Pinay (meaning Filipina) sister, is Lea Salonga! I was surprised that the upstairs neighbor the guy kept on yelling at all night long, is cute & by the judge on the neighbor’s smile, is interested in the main character. I didn’t see it coming that the one, who mailed back the Christmas card to the main character is his mother. That’s cool that it indicates that the guy’s mother called back her son, & she loves her son after all. That the mom does care about her son’s well being.
