      PLEASE DO! I love project runway as a frivolous competition programme but I'm very aware that its also a load of bollocks, the production is focused towards creating drama and not about exposing genuine talent, and I think that the many incisive comments you made here would make for a great commentary of the show, and I would honestly pay to watch you dissect the task, clothes, the judges decisions and the weird melodrama. You already ripped the show to the bone (in a non-bitchy, constructive way) and I'd LOVE to see that applied to the show.

    AH! One of those brilliant moments when TH-cam recommends me a video out of nowhere and I actually LOVE IT! Great reasons. I really loved Season 2, but all the other seasons after that felt like they were trying to live up to it. Contestants coming in with prepared catch phrases, people trying to be "the Daniel/Santino/Andre/etc of Season [whatever]" It put the focus too much on the personalities & drama. Just sew something that will blow my mind, stop trying so hard to be somebody.

    I lived in a city that had a university with one of top fashion schools in the country, and the most stressful time for all of them was exams on pattern making. I don't look down on anyone in the creation of fashion. It's hard, and not as glamorous as people think.

I still love the show but I am sick of designers griping when they have to design for other than a size 2, have to do menswear or avant garde. Have they not seen the show? So annoying. Any way, Zoe, just discovered and subscribed!

    Fashion people can be full of shit. When I went to fashion school I witnessed how egotistical our director's were. It was only their style that prevailed not ours and they love to pull the rug off our feet a lot. Im just happy doing cutom made dresses now and being my own boss.

    Ii just stumbled across this video, but your point about "you cant choose your fabrics" and the chaos. I do commissions of custom garments where 90% of the time the customer chooses the fabrics and I just have to make it work. I made a garment out of a fabric that refused to press at all and needed to make bias binding out of it. Didn't press but I still made it work.
    i had a teacher who had a 5 min timer in drafting class who would slam the lid closed and immediately dock 10% when the timer went off. People complained profusely that they were only 10 seconds late, but that't how life works, you HAVE TO stick to deadlines. if you miss a deadline in the real world you could lose out on a crap ton of money not just marks.

    It's funny you mention Rupaul's Drag Race, because drag queens get a similar thing: "You should go on Rupaul's Drag Race!" Now, many drag queens would LOVE to get on that show because it's instant fame and recognition, and if you play the exposure right, you can be a star beyond your local community for a long time. Although, while it IS a compliment, the implication is that its everyone's ultimate goal and it's the ONLY validation of your success. There are plenty who are legends already, performing regularly, making a great living, writing for TV, etc...and being on that show is just not something they want or need. Same for Project Runway. If you're working and happy in design you know how to do it to get out there and promote yourself to where you want to be. It doesn't HAVE to be through Project Runway. On another note, I enjoy you and your channel!

    Before even watching this:
    1) You have actual talent
    2) You're an industry professional
    3) The show has massively declined
    4) There's a great quote from Willam Belli who did RuPauls Drag Race "Drag Race is about finding great reality stars who do drag", I imagine Project Runway operates in a similar vein and you seem like someone who is very above the bullshit

    I think people love fashion enough that a show that featured real designers without the theatrics could still do well.

  • @AE-nf8nz
    @AE-nf8nz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Alot of people have said that the show is extremely staged and very fake, which is pretty true; it feels like you're watching a reality tv show and none of the winners have even really done anything substantial afterwards except for maybe Christian Siriano. Many designers went in with successful businesses before and winning or even going on just brought their business traffic and extra revenue. However, much of the fashion industry does not take the show seriously or those who win.

    • @AE-nf8nz
      @AE-nf8nz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      it also realllyy cheapens fashion as a whole...

    Honestly, after 12 years, any reality competition show is going to get old. The producers use the same formula that they perfected in season 3 or 4, and then they kill it to death. It happens to a bunch of shows. I have just gotten hooked on a show called the Great British Bake Off. The contestants are all amateurs and they certainly do get a bit overwhelmed by certain challenges, but I can say that a good 85% of the show is focused on the technique and process of making different desserts. I certainly learn new things after watching new episodes. Hopefully we'll get a fashion equivalent of that show model. And when we do, you'll definitely be the Bianca of that season and totally slay!

    Michael Kors used to definitely give real industry responses at the critique (imho)...he would crack me up. He was trying to slap them into the real world. I love Project Runway, but I do realize that, in relation to the real world (the way most people "make it" or just live in it) it's like a show like the Voice or American...what was it called...oh yeah, American Idol. Real musicians don't do the Voice or American Idol. They do gigs, shop "tapes", do session work...

    I think a fashion competition show focused on the craft could actually work and run, but not in the US. I think it would need to happen in the UK. Look at The Great British Bake Off, it's a baking competition show that is immensely popular and it focuses mostly on the art of baking with very little focus on the drama.

    I have met people, including one who is a designer, who work in fashion. Even they say that Project Runway isn't a true reflection of the fashion industry; fashion is a hard business. A lot of designers, including Michael Kors, usually end up in financial situations. In the old wholesales model, retailers would place an order, but not cough up the money until seasons later. It's financially hard to run a fashion line

    You definitely practice what you preach, that's what fascinates me with what you have to say and teach. Authenticity! And, most of all, I've learned a lot about fashion and the conceptual part of creating an artistic piece is something that's very much missing in the fashion design industry (at least what's mass produced for consumers) to a level that's very disrespectful to the world of Art.

    I found you on my suggestions and I don't know why because I have not watched any videos that would relate to this topic. Ironically, I've always wanted to be a fashion designer, have an associate's on Fashion Merchandising (never finished the BA) and love design. My brother was an amazing designer who never took the next step because he passed away.
    I so agree with you about the fact that those characters are in every industry and Project Runway just perpetuates the stereotype. I stopped watching the show after the second or third season because I got tired of watching them all freak out when they had the real woman challenge. I have accused designers in the past of only designing for hangers (women that are so skinny and no curves that it is no challenge to make dresses for them).
    I always wanted to design but at 50 I gave up on my dream. I will say that you have a great personality. You had me cracking up with your comments and the comments about the Korean perspective and I subscribed so I a can live vicariously through you.

    I like when you are explaining the industry and in the real industry they give you a challenge and we have quietly to handle it.I have done 4 internships to this point this is exactly what happens every single time. If in a busy moment anyone freaks out and gets melodramatic they are out of there and never come back. This is the reality. Fashion companies are busy with making money and preparing the next products to be shipped and on time for the buyers. So everyone works hard and do their part of the job without too much fuzz and buzz.

    Zoe gurl.
    You said it yourself, it’s entertainment.
    Project Runway does not perpetuate the “chaotic creative”. It’s editing and stress from the 24 hour challenges. If you know it’s edited, then disregard the belied that chaotic creatives exist on that show. They can create a fake persona through contestants, but you and I and the industry knows it’s all fake. And even if they produce such personas, Who is it harming? You? It’s just a little annoying... that’s all.
    Breathe!
    Sweetheart. I’m sure you have a great deal of experience and you may have credibility and education, but please remember Project Runway is a Televised show which features competition and challenges...
    It’s a huge opportunity for unprivileged people who don’t have the resources or funds or exposure to help create their vision. Just like how you support your students or whatever, at least you’re aware of how valuable the reward is to win such a great competition. Imagine the win for a student.
    Also the challenges usually are within a 24 hour time frame, so even something as simple as swapping fabrics with other competitors CAN certainly be stressful. You should know how fabrics differ and can change a design drastically. And (*cough coughs) again, their whining and drama is all for viewers and entertainment.
    Project Runway doesn’t really do the whole fashion industry justice. But it’s a huge opportunity to win some cash, and push your small developing name out there. To me applying And competing on Project Runway is worth it! Why not? What do you have to lose? You have a chance to develop your dreams! I just applied and I hope I learn from the experience.
    I won’t let commerce cut my creativity. I want to learn so much. I really feel like the whole fashion pie chart is totally fucked up. I want to pave my own way. Fashion is cultural, philosophical, and shouldn’t be just money commerce and mass production.
    I have so much to learn. Also I enjoy your videos.

    Hey Ms. Hong, (I've only watched like 20 videos, i don't quite know you yet to call you Zoe) I was wondering if you have ever watched 'Making the cut' on Amazon Prime? In case you hadn't heard (which i doubt) Heidi and Tim Gunn (because he name must be said exactly like that) did a offshoot show, and not even 20 minutes into the show i would swear someone who designed the show saw this rant/critique and worked on fixing some stuff. I mean they are actually talking about tech packs. Anyway.... was just wondering if you had seen it, and if it was 'real' enough to not f*ck up your blood pressure as badly.

    Hi Zoe, do you feel like project runway shows could be staged sometimes, like perhaps the winner is chosen before hand? Cause I watch some seasons and the winning designs and sometimes (mostly) not the fan favourites & the judges seem to give this take on everyone’s clothing but pick one to win that doesn’t match what they are looking for ?

    I used to be a fan of Project Runway, but after they left Bravo, I fell out of the loop. I've been in the industry for 10 years, and I would have to agree that the portrayal of designers and the Fashion Industry is completely twisted. Designers in the industry don't do their own sewing and patternmaking, that's what sample sewers and pattern makers are for. I did like that other show "Fashion Star" which seemed a little more realistic, but I know that show was short lived. Anyway, love your videos and have a great day!

    On the newest Season they have models of what they call "all sizes" for the first time. Is it actually that difficult/different to design for bigger women, or are they just being dramatic?

    Not sure of the accuracy but I did hear Santino Rice had said he was later very happy he was a runner up on the show due to a clause in the contract that entitled the Weinstein company to continuous royalties on anything the winner did after the show. TV is a great platform to present yourself to the world but with the shady practices and fake forced storylines alone, it takes away from any true talent showcased. You're not just a pretty face girl, you're intelligent too imo!

    I went to an art school that had a "fashion" section,but it was actually called textile. it was mainly split in two parts: One called "shaping clothes" (it gets lost in translation,i am from Macedonia),and another one "design of textile". The first was about different history of art and period clothes,and they would get like Egypt,and from studying the clothes worn there,a ne then through stages (4-5)much like you do it was transformed into fashionable clothes. the history periods were chronological. Drawing and e rendering of fashion figures were a part of that also. The other class was more like designing womens art deco scarf design,childrens bedding design... but also like embroidery,knitting.. the draw back was that they had very practical,industry experience except for some theatre costumes that they did every semester.what do you think about this? can you do a historical/period clothes transformed,or used for inspiration,and do you think that is a good way to start a design?

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't think it matters much what kind of inspiration you start from, it's where you take it. You can give the same exact 10 inspiration images to to 10 designers and they'll each take it somewhere else because our brains and how we process and what kinds of things we like are all different. As long as you end up with something beautiful (whatever your version of beautiful is), something new, something your customer wants.
      In terms of using period clothes, as long as you make it look modern, it should be fine. During WWII, with fabric rations being so strict, many women took apart their grandmothers' dresses (so much fabric in those long gowns!) and restitched them in 40s silhouettes. No one really thinks about how they look like Belle Epoque because they don't--the WWII ladies thoroughly modernized the dresses.

      Zoe Hong that's so interesting! I always learn a lot from you. I agree totally about the inspiration part, I guess I just wanted your opinion on how much do you think art/fashion history matters, is it an advantage to those who know or can reference it?

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      >>how much do you think art/fashion history matters, is it an advantage to those who know or can reference it?
      Knowledge is always an advantage, but how much it matters on a practical level depends on what kind of designer you are. Costume designers, of course it matters a lot, even if you focus on futuristic looks, you need an understanding of what came before. Designers who, for lack of better words, do simple, straightforward design, like active wear, yoga pants, business casual, stuff like that, I don't think really learning history will affect their aesthetic or approach much at all.
      So who should learn it? 1. Students or newer designers who are still exploring their own approach. Learning how silhouettes and techniques developed over the years and WHY and HOW they developed can go far in guiding someone to discover what they like, what they don't, and what they hope to achieve in design. 2. Designers who embrace technology within their clothing, because again, learning how technology has advanced and changed within design teaches us so much. Example, how the invention of stretch fabrics changed fashion. 3. Designers who are trying to deliver a message beyond aesthetic with their clothes. Our clothes and the way we wear them are steeped deep in visual codes. Fashion is a global industry that affects and is affected by politics, economics, tides in social change, the climate, EVERYTHING. There are painters who want to paint pretty pictures of flowers in a vase because they are pretty. There are painters who want to move you to emotion, to action. There's nothing wrong with either painter, it's how they want to give to the world. I'm rambling now, I need more coffee, but I think you get where I'm going.
