    Subject: Automotive - 1
    Letter: 2nd
    Chapter: 6
    Class: 10th class
    Discussed in this class:
    - What is the ignition system?
    - Types of ignition systems.
    - Identify the primary and secondary circuits of the system.
    - The work of different units of the ignition system.
    - Possible errors of the ignition system and its remedy.
The class was taken by Mohammad Atiqur Rahman, Chief Instructor, Jhalokati TSC
The method by which high voltage is required to ignite the mixture (air + gas / petrol). And the fuel mixture is ignited with the help of high voltage. It is called the ignition system. Functions and principles of ignition system
The fuel mixture in the combustion chamber is compressed in a compression stroke to prepare for combustion. But cannot ignite itself. So this time the fuel mixture is burned with high voltage through the spark plug. Sparking occurs a few degrees before the piston reaches the TDC. Thus the spark occurs at the end of each contraction.
We know that, according to Michael Faraday's principle of electromagnetic induction, voltage is created in a conductor when there is a relative motion between a conductor and a magnetic field. Therefore, by applying that principle, high voltage spark is generated with the help of ignition system.
Types of Ignition Systems: There are two main types:
    (1) Battery coil ignition system. (2) Magneto ignition system.
Battery coil ignition system is again of two types.
    (A) Conventional battery system. (B) Electronic ignition system.
    (2) There are three types of magneto ignition systems.
    (A) Moving coil type (b) Moving magnet type (c) Polar inductor type.
It is more common to use conventional battery type systems. So the conventional battery type system is discussed below.
Conventional battery type system: This method usually consists of two circuits.
    (1) Primary circuit: The parts that make up the primary circuit
    (A) Battery (b) Ignition switch (c) Ignition coil primary winding (d) Contractor breaker point and condenser
    (2) Secondary circuit. The parts that make up the secondary circuit:
    (A) Secondary winding of coil (b) Rotor (c) Distribution cap (d) Spark plug
When the ignition switch is turned on, electricity flows through the primer circuit when the contract breaker point is off. This creates a magnetic field in the coil. When the contract breaker point is opened with the cam of the distributor shaft. Then the magnetic field of the coil becomes dim. As a result, the induced current in the middle of the primary coil flows in the same direction as the current in the battery and charges the condenser. The primary coil produces 250-300 volts. Usually the winding patch of the ignition coil is higher than the winding patch of the primary winding to the secondary winding. (Primary winding ক Secondary winding) = (1 ঃ 100).
When the magnetic field weakens, the ball lines intersect the secondary winding. This produces 100 times more voltage than the secondary winding. (The ignition coil converts the low voltage of the primary circuit to the high voltage of the secondary circuit as a special type of transformer). The high voltage (25000-30000 volts) produced in the secondary winding goes to the distributor cap through the high tension cable.
