    Hello, there.
To answer your question regarding the rolling "r". The way Till sings is because he took singing lessons with am opera singer for 2 years, hence this style of singing being used in classic music.
There are some German dialects, where the "r" is being rolled. But in high german it's not being done.
With love from Germany 😎 🤘🏻

Dude, if you EVER have the chance to see them live...BUY THE TICKET! Absolutely epic, beautiful, brutal, and warm...quite warm. Best thing I've ever spent money on, in my life. Rolling Rs is just a personal choice for Till, to put emphasis on certain words and phrases.

My favorite live performance of the song is the one from Download Festival. I especially like the flamethrowers that shoot from left and right onto the stage and unite there to form a fireball (sun).

Till Lindemann said the song was originally written as a "fighter song" for the famous Ukrain brothers and Boxers Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko. "Klitschko" was also the working title of the song. This is how the lyrics paraphrase the hitting of the opponent and the referee's count to a knockout:

    • @HelsVite
      @HelsVite ปีที่แล้ว

that's correct, but the song was to heavy for kltschko, and he founds out, what the song is actually about... Heroine

The R is slightly more pronounced but not to the extent that Till rolls it. I'm learning to speak German (minimum two hours a day for a year, hard going but worth it) and I also speak Welsh. The R roll in both is quite similar. The way Till used it is a vocal choice though. I missed seeing them in Cardiff here in the UK last year because I was too ill to go and I still sigh very heavily about it. If they ever come back here, I'll be there come hell or high water!

Till is from Berlin and they roll the R more than we germans from the west for example, but definitely not as much as he uses for the vocals of the songs

I am a trained actress and was on theatre stages back in Austria. We also have German as our native language, but it is slightly different. Like US-English and UK-English.
This "stage talk" is useful, that even the last one hears, what you as performer say. He has a microphone, but I could make out pronunciations of letters, we also pronounce different, when we act on stage. Unfortunately too less are using it today and even more less know about this exists. I think, my teacher, was still "old school" but I am alright with it.
I am sorry to hear that you could not go. I was glad, I could. Also in second row fire zone. I truly hope, you can still see them one day. ❤

@@Cindy_Dakin_ Agreed. I live in the Northwest and speak a quite standard “Hochdeutsch” Accent. We barely roll the R. But since Germany is linguistically quite diverse, there are regions were the roll is more pronounced. Till then adds just a bit more spice on top😜

We call it "Bühnen Deutsch". The rolling R is part of the german language, but not very often. The rolling R was part of a "stage german" 150+ years ago where germany had many kinds of dialects. And the "Bühnendeutsch" was a version witch everybody could understand. For example when shows traveled through the country and played in different parts of germany

Simplify and distinguish between the rolled tongue R and the uvula R spoken in the throat. And that's where a tremendous change took place in German: 300 years ago, the R was rolled in the entire language area, today this only happens in a few dialects.

The rolling of the r is mainly done by people who grew up in the state Bavaria - due to the dialect --- combining bavarian dialect and oxford English together and what you in essence get is souther slang kinda - kinda the way I learned the southern accent quickly - I grew up in lower Bavaria and lived in NC for ten years and some could not tell that I was german - unless they heard me cussing in german --- lol

some words that require the rolled r in german (although not as extreme as Till does):
    sprechen - speak
    Trotz - defiance
    Prost! - cheers!
    Problem - problem
    groß - great / big
    frei - free
    Trompete - trumpet
    Brezel - pretzel
    Brot - bread
rule of thumb: an "r" after a consonant has to be rolled, others may be rolled.

Rammstein's rolling "r" comes from German literature. Rammstein's lyrics are often based on German poets like Schiller. Till Lindemann's father was a German poet and writer. Till Lindemann himself published a lot of poetry. Many of Rammstein's lyrics are written more like poems. The rolling "r" has also fallen into disrepute in Germany because Hitler used it in his speeches

🇦🇹 Austria here, German native speaker. In the German language there is a slight rolling of the “r”, but nothing like Till does as he overemphasizes it. Most people somewhat slur the “r” anyway. A lot of native English speakers who learn German use the “r” as pronounced in English and it still sounds about alright. It is a matter of perfection really.

"Rrolling the R" is just how we say it, it's not a concious decision. The pronounciation is just different from English and takes place in another area in the throat. It's something anybody can do with practice. German doesn't have TH, but we can still learn to say it (even when American movies let people believe we only have sharp s ....). But yes, Till deliberately goes hard on his Rs and it obviously works well with the music.

Just to add up to the rolling "r" as a German native (... and loving Rammstein), it is/was actually a bit controversial as some people try to push Rammstein to the far right movement, which is actually not correct at all (actually I would tend to put them more kind of slightly "leftish"). One argument of these guys is that the rolling "r" is related to Adolf Hilter who rolled the "r" in a similar manner. This was potentially even triggered by the far right movement itself as these guys just look out for someone to put in front of their bandwagon. Bullshit anyway. "Sonne" ist one of my favorite songs, maybe "Ich tu dir weh" from the same show tops it by an inch ;-). Love to y'all.
