- This video will show you how to fix'"The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error" in Windows 10/8/7.
1. Open Command Prompt
2. Type wmic diskdrive get status and press Enter.
3. Type chkdsk /f /r and press Enter.
4. In case you’re getting problem with already initialized disk, go to File Explorer. Right click on the problematic disk and click Properties.
5. In the property sheet, on the Tools tab. Go to the Error checking section, click Check. This will check the drive for file system errors.
6. on Error checking window, click Scan drive and allow Windows to complete manual error checking. This should also fix the error with the disk.

I fear this is what happened to me. thankfully ok now but only after taking laptop to a specialist who brought it back to life after i got stuck in a blue screen loop.
I recommend finding another video, if your looking to check/fix only a specific drive. This method for me, only checked my C Drive files , which was not the problematic drive. I It didn't delete any files from my C Drive, but some had issues of it deleting their drives. So proceed with caution.
It worked perfectly for me. My external HDD got stacked out of the sudden. Now it is running again. Thank you!

So I did everything in the video and I am now at the start up "fixing C:" i dont need C: fixed I wanted to get an extenal hard drive to work. Is it possible to cancel this before I lose all my stuff?

when I restart the laptop it stopped at 41% on the C drive for 12 hrs

in my command prompt, it says 'windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected', kindly suggest.

you need to run command prompt as an administrator, so before you open it, right click and select "Run as administrator "
My external HDD isn't recognize and is 'Not initialized' with the same notice 'The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error'!!! I can't do 'MBR' and 'GPT'!
I went through all these steps WITHOUT any success!!!

after I tried it turned out to be only valid at that time, not permanent, after turning it off there will be another error
did you get this results on a external drive or win disc C?
not disk C or external disk but disk D.
(EDIT: If anyone is wondering about how long chkdsk will take, it could take hours or days depending on various factors like how much there is to check. Also for me I had a 1TB C drive and it took 3 hours. It was stuck on 14% for most of it. I think it often gets stuck before 30%. If you use Windows 8, 8.1 or 10 then I think you don't see as much info on the scan, so all you can see is the percentage and it can feel like it's not making progress, but it likely is.)
It seems like this tutorial might work, but it seems like it will also have wasted a ton of my time unnecessarily because I followed the steps without looking at too many comments ahead of time and now my computer is stuck needlessly scanning the C drive that is working fine rather than the E drive which is the problem... Hopefully it only takes a few hours and not several days because I'm normally on my computer a lot and hopefully the OTHER steps in the tutorial later on will address the issue...

Let everyone define the word "fatal". I'm gonna try one more thing and if it doesn't, it will be my new paper weight. I guess I should be happy because I never really got a chance to use it but waited way to long to return it...:'( :'( :'(
didn't work for me. still same problem.
My fatal device error has it being seen in the Device Manager, even by the drive's name (driver is the latest and even says it is working properly) and Disk Management but there is no drive letter to it. It's like a ghost drive. Going into the Cmd Prompt and trying to find it via DiskPart>list disk... it sees it as Disk 2 online with 0 bytes. Running the Clean process ends with again "DiskPart has encountered an error: The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error. I am stumped.

WARNING - this caused lots of stress. I FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE VIDEO AND HAD TO END UP TAKING MY LAPTOP TO A SPECIALIST AS I GOT STUCK IN A BLUE SCREEN LOOP (even with bitlocker enabled). Thankfully they brought it back to life. BUT PROCEED WITH CAUTION. Plus it didnt work in regard to the drive either.

@@kimanuel try using chkdsk [drive letter]: /f /r. the instructions incorrectly detail that if you dont specify the drive label it will just check your c drive
