I will say, seeing the unicorns be all depressed makes so much sense to me X"D They lost their magic. That was one of the biggest things unicorns had going for them back in the day. So of course they're all dull and gloomy. It's like Crystal Ponies without the Crystal Heart. They had lost a core part of their very _being._

I like how they handled Sprout. His sudden yet natural transition from timid deputy to power crazed dictator was so well done. I also appreciate how his own mother decided to avoid reprimanding him in any way, which also feels natural because she was an enabler to his fear mongering, but also avoid accepting or justifying his actions because she actively disagreed with what he had done.
I felt like it was way too sudden. Sprout went from purposely going into one of his moms unicorn catching traps to avoid going after Izzy and securing the citizens' safety to straight up being pony hitler and leading his entire town against everyone else like wtf

G4 gave the franchise maturity and nuance. G5 is literally following the lead of G4. I would love to see the events of G4 continue to play a role, but also for G5 to take off in its’ own direction.
Oh man I’m just really excited for the show and for that one history episode that I’m assuming will exist because it should where the characters go on a quest and discover what happened in the past and everything Basically just a “discovering the past” episode + nostalgia for the G4 fans (my 2 favorite things)
I haven’t yet watched the video, but I wanted to comment early to potentially be seen. I remember when all Saber made was mlp content, and it’s so cool to see him being successful with what’s he’s currently pursuing. I met him at a convention (Ciderfest 2019), and he was super nice. I’m glad to see him put out a video for the movie, as it shows he hasn’t forgotten where he came from.
I’m not sure why, but I adore that they named her Sunny, giving a nudge at Twilight. I know it’s obvious but I didn’t think about it fully until sometime after watching the movie.
I mean.... Celestia Luna Twilight Sparkle Sunset Shimmer Luster Dawn It seems all of the main rulers or students of them have celestial/sky based names
I feel like she's în fact a direct descendent of Twilight. I mean, for an ordinary lighthouse in a time where mostly everyone forgot of the mane 6, her home had a lot of ancient mlp symbols. It's also odd how her father seems to be the only one who had his hooves on such old stories
@@lisandepuredream9056 I feel that probably most of the new Mane Five are related to Twilight in some way, with maybe Hitch being the exception. Sunny and her dad with the lighthouse, stories, gem, and most importantly Twilight's symbol on the necklace and book. The Pegasus royals because again, they have the gem, they are ROYAL(relating to Princess Twilight maybe), the Queen and Zipp both instantly recognized Twilight's symbol on Sunny's book, and the stain glass windows in the airport. Izzy's is kinda weak, but she along with the rest (or their family) all have color similarities with Twilight. Zipp not so much, but both her sister and mother do.
I never really "got into" MLP gen 4, but as a father, I really enjoyed watching the show with my children. It was a very well written show with great characters and great lessons for kids that were presented well without beating you in the head with it like most kids shows (except when it did on purpose and owned it).
Same when I babysitted my brother's kids years ago they were watching that all the time it unintentionally got me into it it actually not bad for a kid show not on the level of last Airbender but it's up there yeah if I wasn't playing Halo with the kids we were watching MLP

I believe all art should be based and judged on it’s merits, no matter the audience or demographic, and if something is good, even if I don’t personally like it, I can admire its strength for all it tried.
You do realize that Saberspark used to run a MAJOR My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic news/fansite, right??? That's literally what he did before TH-cam. He lS this movie's core demographic. He's very much a uber hardcore brony! Edit - Guess he says this again at the beginning of the video.
I have a bizzare reverence for the Brony fandom. So much awful, but so much great at the same time...I...used to be among them. I dont hold much allegiance to them anymore, but its sometimes fun to remember how Equestria was the nation that lived in my heart one day. Now its like I live in the Byzantine Empire and I wonder what ever happened to the other half of the Roman Empire...
As someone who wasn't into the candy-colored pony franchise and only had slight interest in G4, seeing the trailer for G5 made me curious because of how adorable it looked without it being oversaturated. So I had it on in the background while I was drawing at 3 am- it was enjoyable to look at and the writing was clever along with the characters being charming and funny. Looking back on the movie a 2nd time, the amount of detail in the art and designs is admirable; really cute and harmless movie with good writing, very glad it isn't watered down to spoon-feed the kids.

This is how G4 worked so well actually. Mature details (and there was plenty in G4) are concealed in such a way that kids can't get it, but older people will do easily.
I didn't watch much G4 as well back then when the only thing I wanted to watch was Transformers Prime on hub but I watch a little bit back then it was alright for me since you know boys at a young age didn't watch girly stuff not saying it's not for girls though sorry if I offended anyone but I watch a little bit (including the human ones) it was alright for me if Spike and Fluttershy showed
I was never interested in MLP... until I watched this movie. Now I'm trying to avoid G4 while looking up G5 stuff and trying not to fall down the rabbit hole of cutie-mark-filled "despair"
My mom grew up with G1, I grew up with G3 and my cousins grew up with G4 :) I love that this franchise is still thriving, but can we not devalue the older stuff so much? It had plenty of merit!
I’ve been around since then too, and I always thought it was cool how Saber became super popular years later after I moved away from MLP stuff. And cool that you were one of us back then. It was very fun.

Generation one was largely based on Dungeons and Dragons and according to some, pretty dark, with monsters, kidnapping, fights and ponies running for their lives. As far as I know My Little Pony was for boys and girls until they decided to focus on girls and amp up the girlyness to eleven in generation two and two plus. It's curious that you conveniently forget to show fragments from the pilot: escape from midnight castle. That episode had some grim dark scenes in it and they later recolored a lot of the generation one cartoons, because they thought the older colors where "too dark" for a cartoon for girls.
G1 was still for girls, its just, it was the early 80's. the stark delineation between girls and boys content wasn't as pronounced yet. add to that that cartoons, esp what hasbro was putting out then, tended to be darker then what came later and even now. still hammy, but a generally darker style. G1 mlp was closer to transformers and gi joe in tone. then ofcourse, later, it became what society decided was more "girly".
yeah. i find it hypocritical that saberspark rags on generations 1-3 being "girly" and "dumb" and "tea parties and frills"... bruh. it was a show made for little girls. EVERYTHING in g1 to g3's time period made for girls was the exact same way -- very delicate, simplistic, and feminine. if he thinks a 3-5 year old girl is going to be upset with a show being simplistic, feminine, and frilly, he must not know how awful little kids' memory retention is.
I thought it was the other way around, I thought 3D was cheaper to work on larger productions since u work with more deep assets while on 2D u cant reuse all of it, I thought that was the reason we dont have 2D movies anymore in the mainstream, now it's more like a nich thing
The big price question will come down to rendering. A lot of 2D & 3D programs can work in a similar way but can cost different amounts to render. If I make a 3D block I can project any image on it. If I put flat images on it it will lose its 3D visual but it was very easy to make. A lot of anime will do this for say a class room, bc they can just duplicate out the desks but make them look line drawn.
3d/CGI tends to be cheaper for theatrical productions- as you mention full set reuse is a huge asset and the basics of how you construct a 3d animation don't change through the quality jump from tv to film 2D puppet animation is cheaper than 3D because you also get the advantage of reuse while having less steps in the production process, overall, but if you say, compare the average MLP g4 tv episode to the movie, you'll notice that the animation style is vastly different- i guarantee they made totally new rigs and incorporated a lot more redraw into the process than in the show, where there were probably next to no redraws at all after like.. season 2, and if you want to go full, say, Klaus with film animation, that's immensely more expensive basically, for tv shows and tv movies, 2D is probably the way to get more polish for less money, 3D is less expensive for full theatrical film still (though they are evening out!! According to the director, Klaus, a fully 2D animated film with no rigging, just frame by frame art, was only marginally more expensive than a similar 3d film would have been) I think a lot of tv show commentators have a reflexive memory of the visual quality of early cgi tv shows like beast wars that makes them cringe at the thought of tv cgi because it did take so long to catch up as a pleasant visual experience (no shade to beast wars, the plot is genuinely good but you can't deny it's ugly)
2D is more expensive because it is a lot more work to do in a per frame basis while 3D is more expensive to render it good. Movie Animation in the west made the transition to 3D because it is faster to make it look good, faster to animate and as a result it's artists are paid less per frame (and because 3D movies were more well received in the 90's). 2D is better for low budget TV shows because it is less expensive to make a 2D animation look good enough than a low budget 3D one. Just compare Madagascar TV Series (2011) with Adventure Time (2010) to see this in practice. Just a notice: in the east, 2D is the mainstream because the majority of their animation market is for TV shows, because the asian public didn't care much for the rise of 3D animation and because they underpay A LOT their animators while making them work much more than they would in the west (it's similar to how triple A game developers treat their personel in the west).
I believe it takes more effort and in turn money to make 3D animation look good consistently and sure it may be cheaper to make a movie in CG then in 2D but if you want to make a series look great in CG it takes more money since your not just animating 1-2 hours of media your animating roughly 5 hours of media and that’s if it’s just 12 episodes

Dint forget his mom. Yeah sure she had a turn around and saw the error of her ways, but let's not forget Sprout turned out the way he did because of how SHE raised him. They both have a lot to make up for in the series
There wasn't even a unified villain beyond him and even then, I'd say he was more an antagonist that just took an opportunity and ultimately showed he wasn't a complete monster because he didn't do something that a monster would in the last act.
Sunny: "Unicorns aren't dangerous!" Me, with vague but many memories of unicorn villains and heroes doing massive damage with their spells on G4: "Yeah... About that."
I'm still genuinely surprised the old fandom has rallied around this. I figured they would be much more judgmental. I really hope you review the series as it goes. Might not ever see you in BronyCon ever again, but I'd love to hear you talk about Ponies more.
I liked that one of the crew was male, it's like they realized that boys like it too and threw us a bone. Yes there were dudes in the friendship is magic version but they were side characters that weren't really apart of the "crew". This feels good and not too preachy (in general), just working together for common goals and if that continues I'll be happy but if they reduce hitch's role in the show I'll be kinda bummed about it.
I hope they treat him as an equal to the other characters, they already did in this movie like not making it a big deal in the slightest that he was a boy, like there was no spike treatment. I'm sure the rest of the 4 main characters will treat him as a friend as they should :)
I liked the foreshadowing in the last few seconds that the workings of earth pony magic will be elaborated on. Like the kid running in the field made the grass light up. So much potential for the future show. So much to look forward to ^^
Given how a specialization in magic is a cutie mark, it was always interesting how such a talent would transfer to other ponies, maybe in the future those kinds of ideas can be explored to see how capable certain kinds of magic are outside of relics
I just like how pretty the Pegasus ponies wings are, everything about the character models are more detailed than they ever have been before! They look so good.
I kinda thought Pipps wings were so fluffy because she never exercised them and so she couldn’t fly. The end of the movie obviously nixed that idea though lol

I agree about the models but the color combinations are just all over the place for me... like Izzy and Hitch looked alright but the others just didnt, especially Sprout and Zipp like why are her hair and wings different pallets???? Gen 4 ponie colors were waaaaaay better
Gen 1 MLP is actually pretty good for a little kids show... The best way I could describe it is that it is probably what you would get if a daycare full of 5-8 year old girls played Dungeons and Dragons, but all their characters were horses. So there not much there for an adult but for a kids show it had a lot of very cool elements.
Very true. I grew up watching the OG MLP and it could be both pretty exciting and surprisingly dark. Now the follow up My Little Pony Tales on the other hoof... well, maybe the less said about that cartoon the better.
I actually really liked MLPT, it had some fun episodes, and the male ponies actually had some significant roles and character development. It was definitely different.
Not to mention a LOT of SERIOUSLY dark stuff. Like the episode where all of Ponyland is covered in glass and you're shown disturbingly detailed close ups of the horrified looks on the faces of the ponies turned to glass. When I first saw that back in 2015, my jaw dropped. Like, that is DARK
Their is a my little pony RPG like d and d me and my friend play it with her 6 yer old it’s quite good as pen and paper RPG and I’ve been playing d and d for about 20 yers so not a noob
Yeah, thank you! I hate people describing it as "Girly dumb fluff for dumb babies," I haven't watched it since I was a kid but I very clearly remember a few episodes being pretty scary and hardcore for a 7 year old! It's also what first got me into adventure-type stories instead of the "Princess waits for hero to save her" stories that were typical of the time.
I have a feeling the show is going to be about how they're actually going to get along and will hopefully give us some background on how they all ended up segregated. Also this movie is great and my only nitpick is how underused Hitch is. Especially during the dance off smh.
The comics being like "We still exist you know... We still answer questions And we are... debatably.... canon? Isn't that good? No? Everyone only cares about the animated things? All right...."
@@PinkSneaselGirl So far it has been so much World Building in them, but it doesn't focus on the time after The Last Problem, they focus on the time after they defeat Cozy, Chrysalis and Tirek and are exploring new lands with their own "Frienship trees" each one of them with a different group of side characters, with the leader being one of the main six, from what i remember, we've seen Zecora's land, Capper's land, Captain Cellano's land, fun fact, She is a lesbian, and some more that right now i can't remember, but the big bads that right now they are fighting are called the Knights of Friendship, which created all of the trees of friendship for every land that wasn't equestria, and they want to destroy pony kind for some reason i can't remember But the point is they probably won't focus on how equestria got this bad, because equestria got divided after the Last Problem most likely, and what we are focusing on right now is before that so it's very probable we won't get an answer as to how it got divides, but were getting very fun worldbuilding, and, fun fact, one of Zecora's friends in the land of the Zebras is non binary, yeah that happened, but also for now there aren't any clues as to how many characters got into how they are in the last problem, for example we haven't seen Rainbow Dash and Applejack spend any time together, or Fluttershy with Discord, or Gallas wanting to be a royal guard... Yeah, that's basically what is happening with the comics right now
I was honestly surprised by how explicit the message was. It's very rare I see childrens' movies depict bigotry in a way that felt so scarily real. Even though I admit it was a lot for me at first, after I got over the initial shock I came to appreciate how the message was delivered. Easily changed it from your basic "be nice to everyone despite their differences" movie with a kind of implied allegory to a straight up "don't be r@c1st movie". This could 100% be an overreaction on my part, but I really can't say I was expecting something like that from a My Little Pony movie. Either that, or I really need to up my standards lol.
I saw more than racism being depicted; I saw what happens to a world run by fear and propaganda. Its already happening in our world. Its more than This Race against That Race. Its Vaxxed vs Unvaxxed, Straight vs LGBT, Female vs Male, Religion vs Other Religions, arguing over differences. Together we stand, divided we fall. I saw what our own world will turn into if we continue to let our differences divide us. To me Sunny and her dad represented those who dare to speak the truth in a brainwashed society. But maybe I've just wrapped my brain in tinfoil 🤷
I agree, by putting fear in peoples minds and creating a division, the higher ups get power and control.. It's a sad thing and the movie depicts it well!
you know it kind of reminded me of the Winnie-the-Pooh _Heffalump_ movie! That also had similar themes and messages on xenophobia and intolerance, and it dealt with it in a pretty conscientious and profound way for a kid's movie. That was actually the first film I saw in theaters, and rewatching it recently I'd still definitely recommend! It's on Netflix I think if anyone wants to check it out :)

I'm excited to see what they do from where this movie jumped off from. Because this implies that the era Sunny and company are in is a distant future from when Equestria was under the rule of Alicorn Princesses. From what Celestia and Luna implied is that they won't live forever. This would, also, mean that Twilight probably passed on in the maybe not-so-distant past, which may have resulted in a panic among all. Maybe. I can't be sure though! It's all theory right now. I'm so excited.

As a character stated at one point in the film, they still live in equestria. I wonder if any historical landmarks still exist such as canterlot, or the everfree forest, or enven the crystal empire. Also I wonder if the what all the mythical beasts did they slowly die out without magic?

I feel 17 again. Falling in love with ponies, listening to the villain songs over and over again, drawing! I haven't drawn in months, and suddenly I'm doodling for hours! MLP really does have my whole heart.
I felt like there’s a scene in the ending that everyone came together and put the lighthouse back the way it was (with the help of magic) but time and budget didn’t allow it. The thought that Sunny is now homeless is so sad. Or maybe they’re saving it for 44 minutes special coming later, discover more clues from secrets hidden in the lighthouse while they’re rebuilding it.
I adore the film, it’s straight forward and love the musical numbers. Although I felt like was a miss opportunity for them to not go deep into how the Pegasus, unicorns, and earth ponies were divided in the first place. Would’ve been interesting
As someone who wasn’t really a fan of the animated series, I’ve got to say this movie was really cute. I initially wanted to watch it because the animation looked nice, but I didn’t expect much more than that. I was pleasantly surprised!
The theorists and analysts of the fandom have already started going to town on this movie trying to catch every single connection and reference they can. Did anybody else notice that the Pegasus and unicorn in the mural have a golden pair of wings and horn? Or how about the fact that Argyle had a picture of an ancient relic from the Equestria Girls series in his lighthouse (specifically, a relic that makes people/ponies forget about whatever the user wants them to forget). We’re going to be picking this movie apart for a while, and I’m nothing but excited for the new series coming out next year!
That's just to allude to the magical horn and wings Sunny gets at the end. The movie otherwise contradicts FiM - since when did pegasi need magic to fly? Does that mean gryphons, or even birds cannot fly without magic???
@@SwiftNimblefoot It doesn't contradict anything since A it is a huge time skip and B we haven't seen all of the lore yet. The movie is a pilot so of course it won't hold all the answers. The series will give more pieces of the puzzle next year. A lot can happen after an era ends
I grew up with mlp G4 and I got my boyfriend, who really didn't like or want to like mlp, to watch this with me. And he ACTUALLY enjoyed the movie. I think there being an actual male a part of the Mane5 helped. He really liked Hitch and I am so excited to possibly watch the series with him.
the main thing that I noticed about the film was the animation, there was so much quality to it, one thing in particular (I noticed this in Riya and the last dragon too), was THE EYES and I don't just mean the colours or details, I mean the effort! they did that thing where the eyes actually moved when they were staying still, if there was ever a close up on the eyes they would be slightly flickering from side to side, taking in all the details! The quality of the animation I can't- (I also loved what they did to the hooves)
i love what they did with the hooves too! it reminds me of the old mlp toys that would have the magnets in the hooves to interact with the castle toys and furniture stuff
If you look at their eyes closely, you can actually see reflections of what the ponies are looking at. And the tufts of hair on the fetlocks - amazing animation and attention to details!
Definitely a step up from G4. I think we all remember the multitude of errors and issues that G4 had in its animation. Hell, a beloved character within the community was the result of an animation error.
I'm not going to lie, this movie was starting on a backfoot with me. Set in the same world, with unfamiliar elements but in 3D, like you said. I had my reservations. And I have to admit, if this movie was just passable, I would have shat all over it. Said it is a downhill run and was trash up and down. But, despite that, it put it's foot up and prepared itself. The story is interesting, they didn't answer questions that didn't need them (At the moment.) and the songs were catchy and hum-worthy. Whether this becomes a series or not is still a mystery, but I did really enjoy this movie.
The movie was okay, but I feel like this MLP lacked the healthy sublety of FIM. FIM dealt with rac/sm and fearmongering (a core theme in this whole movie) far better. I mean irl, you don't often see someone rallying a whole town to make a robot so you can attack an entire race of ponies. However you may see snarky, rude, or condescending behvaiour towards someone who is different. I enjoyed the movie, but I wish it wasn't so cartoonishly in your face. It's a cartoon, but do the earth ponies really need to make an actual cult? I worry this series will lack the nuance that the first few seasons of FIM had. Hopefully it goes well though, I like the variety in character design.
This is the comment I was looking for; I saw this movie on my feed and kinda immediately disregarded it as another thing I used to care for that time has messed with. But I would say I typically enjoy things alot on my own and plan to give the movie a try

Honestly, I like how the movie looks, but I feel like the plot of the movie was really rushed. They just sorta showed up in places, "we need the MacGuffin" somebody gets it for them, and then at the end, (SPOILER ALERT) the MacGuffin was inside of us all along. I feel like everywhere they went wasn't a big journey, it was like, an hour's walk at most. There was just too much packed into a small space, I didn't really get time to appreciate any of the characters. The characters barely ever fought with eachother, they just got kind of bitter at one point and got over it because campfires or something. It wasn't a terrible movie for me, though. The movie looks great as I wrote before, and I really like the new direction the story is going in. I like that the problem they'll be facing is of a bigger scale this time, and that the characters aren't just copies of the last cast. I never look at the characters and think "oh that's the new Rarity" or "there's the new Fluttershy". I'm really hoping to learn a bit more about the characters in the upcoming series!
It is still for kids so yeah but while sunny and pip are new character types especially pip reflecting modern social media zipp is like new rainbow but a lot less modest while izzy feels like a mixture between rarity and pinkie having raritys creativity with pinkie pies fun energy and i love it

@@soda5364 well think of it like this this was a pilot movie to a whole new show that can dig deeper into one idea per episode we can learn more about the characters and world and see how everything fell into place i see the movie setting up a world that has some mystory conflict that needs to be solved does that make sense
I feel like the sort of felt/fleece bump mapping they did for the fur was a really nice touch. I feel like a lesser studio would have either made every character smooth jigglypuff looking things with no texture at all, or attempted to go the Zootopia route with hyper realistic hair and ended up with that mangey first draft Sonic the Hedgehog look. This middle ground was the best of all worlds. It was within their means, it didn't break the budget, and it still looked really really nice. Despite the film's occasional misstep, which I cannot deny it had, it really feels like the folks behind it understood the essence of what we all enjoyed in G4. It's fun, it's got a strong grasp of both levity and gravity, and at the end of the movie I wanted to see more of these characters, which is the biggest thing a pilot movie needs to accomplish. I also feel like this movie did the whole... "pony racism" thing a lot better than G4 ever did. G4 tried so many times and it failed very consistently. I cannot give it any credit on that. With the way it was handled in G5, it really hit me when the foals were playing their game pretending to be unicorns and kill each other, that like, oh hang on, this is the "Cowboys and Indians" kind of racism. And carrying that attitude through the metaphor made it seem a lot more realistic and sincere than it ever was in G4. That's not to say it's perfect here either, but if they insist on continuing to try it, they're at least moving in the right direction.

Definitely. My family was raised with the notion that every animated show, no matter what, is a kids show. MLP isn’t my cup of tea, but it’s pretty silly to think just because something isn’t live action that older people can’t enjoy it too
I adored this movie I just want to preface. I think the amount of plot holes or weak character motivation equals the amount of foreshadowing for the tv show. Which at the end of the day I don’t have a problem with. This is a movie for kids and the preface to a whole tv series, not everything is going to be solid in the story telling just yet, especially when the real content hasn’t been written yet. Also the songs were in fact awesome, I’m in total agreement there. Oh and I would sacrifice myself for Izzy, I adore her.

I thought the gender equality in this gen is actually good, having more than just female main characters, making boys more comfortable to watch the show without being picked on.
I mean boys should be comfortable watching a show with all or majority female character in general and shouldn't be picked on at all for it so... If girls can watch shows with majority male characters why can't guys watch shows with majority female characters?
Although it's "contained" without big events or villains taking place, I actually enjoyed the movie more so. To me it was an "imaginary slice of life" scenario, which I completely adore. It allowed to focus on establishing character personalities and giving us a scoop of what's going on without it being too much.
I legitimately love the episode about Princess Luna dealing with her own guilt with the Inception vibes of dreams. I cried like a baby at the end of it, but the moment I told some friends that I liked that episode, I was accused of being a brony… I mean, I’m a woman but ok? So, no judgement from me, I unabashedly love that show and enjoyed the new movie. Makes it easier to watch it when I have a 3 year old daughter who loves it too lol

There are animations like Snowdrop and The Fall of the Crystal Empire from Silly Filly Studios, the reviewers like Silver Quill and Commander Firebrand are just,, really fun to watch, and theorists like Sawtooth Waves are something I still watch in my spare time.
Somehow i had a feeling that you would eventually review the mlp G5 movie Saberspark, i overall enjoyed it and even though it has it's ups and downs like all movies do i thought it was a good way to start generation 5, and it makes me look forward to the upcoming G5 tv series!
The stained-glass panel they show gives an interesting theory as to what might have happened. Best I can make of it without them having provided any other details is, at some point, Twilight must've instructed each tribe to present a crystal which she and the rest of the Mane 6 infused with a massive amount of magic. For what reason, we can only speculate at this point. Perhaps Twilight and the others actually became the magic itself infused into the crystals? And, without Twilight and the others as guiding lights, arguments broke out among the tribes that resulted in each tribe taking back their piece of the crystal out of spite, not realising that's why magic went away?
There's always the possibility they might come back in a similar way that the Pillars did, but on top of just them, it's also interesting to wonder how far the lack of magic actually went conerning all life on the planet on top of all powerful magic users in at least Equestria

And then they ended the very last episode by fusing Mewny and Earth. Because it’s not like suddenly throwing a bunch of monsters into a human infested world with guns and nukes and our own versions of racism (which is based off of differences a lot less significant than what species we are) is a bad idea or anything like that (seriously, my head canon is that either all the monsters or all the humans were dead in a matter of hours after the last episode ended, they’re screwed).

Just watched the Movie, and let me tell you: YEEESSS!! I was worried about the new Generation when it was announced, just like everyone else, but I gotta say, I like the way they're heading. Having the setting be the same as Gen 4 but many many moons later allows for changes in the world that we are already familiar with and fond of. The movie was made with a lot of love and care put in, additionally with respect to Gen 4, which just mmm I'm eating it up. I believe that the show will start where the movie left off, and follow the ponies learning to trust each other again and learning what happened between them all so long ago. (Also hoping for a Twilight cameo, since Alicorn, semi-immortal, you know. But that's just a preference thing because I miss my baby) Anyways, can't wait to see what the team has been cooking up! Guess I'll never escape these ponies
Sprout is so great, i really hope he gets a redemption in the show, i also hope he will become the sixth element "growth" After all Sprout means growth. I hope they make more out of him.
In a story board for the show sprout is seen with a pizza delivery hat so maybe he'll get redeemed in the future? But for now it looks like he's being punished for his actions

This felt more like a bookend of a G4 season.. instead of The Two Sisters being the ancient legend this time though, it's Twilight and the magic of harmony/friendship, which is honestly much better represented by the stones fitting together then they ever were with the elements.

I feel like the element gems matching with their personalities was a nice touch, because it wasn't about the three ponies. it was about friendship, and how the power of friends working together is more powerful than anything else. the gems and stones are solving different problems. the stones solving the 3 types of ponies being apart, and the gems bringing together friends and showing them what the most powerful type of magic was
I would also like to point out how they used fear as a tactic for why they where cautious it felt real because fear mongering is a big problem in reality and it does a good job of showing the effects that can have

I'm kind of confused by where they took the story. There was already a backstory in G4 where the Earth, pegasus, and unicorns were segregated and Equestria was founded when they united, and thousands of years later, they've blended in together perfectly. It just feels odd for that progress to regress so much.
History rarely repeats itself but it often rhymes. One bad ruler chosen for good intentions can really isolate your country and make a horrific mess of things. I honestly like the way it went. showing that a good change rarely lasts forever and everything can break. we will see where this will go from now on, but people shouldn't expect a big focus on the history lessons as it will probably be something for us to discover. I always found it weird how fans are angry that the good Twilight times didn't last forever (and somehow assume it's twilights fault). You can't say it was all meaningless as there were probably generations of ponies living in those good times. This is a good backdrop for the new show as it lets them introduce similar lessons to those in G4 without making G4 a mandatory watch. They just want this gen to stand on their own and not be just a companion piece to G4 like most fans want.
It could be a prequel or another universe. There's a little reference to the G4 pony toys in the trailer but it doesn't automatically mean they are canon characters there.

As a male myself, I watched "my little pony" as a kid, and I gave it a thumbs up, my parents don't recommend me to watch it, because it was made for girls(or that's what at least they think), I like it for its animation, plot, and all that stuff. I feel you. I'm a girl but I thought this was only for kids. I watched the mlp g4 because one of my friend liked it and I gave it a go. Now, I'm waiting for the g5 series to release and have something to watch. I'm still waiting for the dragon prince season 4 for over a year and I'd like if the mlp g5 series would come out early 2022. I'm bored of youtube and I have absolutely no series to watch now. The series definitely won’t be as technically polished as the movie, but I wouldn’t worry too much about cost bringing down the quality: one of the major advantages of 3d animation is that it’s super easy to reuse assets. The entry cost is much higher than 2d, but 3d is much cheaper over a long period of time, especially when the movie has created a large bank of high-quality stock assets that the animators can draw on for years to come.
@@josebarrera2272 Exactly, plus MLP has an extra shortcut inherent to it’s toy-selling nature: new characters can easily be made by tweaking and recolouring stock templates, and more off-model characters can still be based off of the default rigging. FiM used similar shortcuts even in flash, they’ve been very smart about being economical with assets, and I think that’s what lets them put more time and effort into actually animating.
My worry is that the grizzled ancients in charge at Hasbro won't understand the value of reusing digital assets; At present they appear to be hiring an entirely different team and maybe using a different production company: if the current production company holds the rights to all the 3D media generated and they can't buy or license them, then they would have to start over. And if they don't realize the complexity of doing that, they might just start over to avoid what they think is the more expensive route. I do hope they are going with the Jimmy Neutron strategy though... only time will tell.
@@michaelperrone3867: Maybe, but Hasbro has a pretty good track record when it comes to media adaptations. Just look at the various incarnations of Transformers, and after the success of _Friendship is Magic_ I think Hasbro sees the potential for MLP to be just as big. I wouldn't expect them to cheep out now.
I hope they move to 2D, for one reason: fanartists. The G4 pony design was made up of simple lines and basic shapes, practically anyone could draw one with a bit of basic talent and practice. This made the bar for entering the fanart community of MLP astronomically low, which potentially led to a greater influx of fans who could see themselves in the show via OCs. If they stick with the 3D style for G5, I'm concerned that people are going to have a much harder time overcoming the entry into fanart that looks like it could be in the show. It remains to be seen, but that's my opinion on the styling of the new ponies.
Challenge accepted. I'll draw in 2d one of the character in the movie. And I don't think that they'll go back to 2d animation for the series. Though, they had to draw the new characters in 2d before making them in 3d. My drawing will be made on my computer and I'll post it on reddit.

These 3D designs aren't really more complicated though. The proportions are a little different and the HD details might feel more intimidating but I don't think they're that far off from Gen 4 if you compare the two 3D movies. But since it's 3D anyway there will always be a slight disconnect, unless they model a pony in a 3D program (which is entirely possible.) So, what will matter more is the artist's skill and imagination being decent at best, if it's 2D, and that can be overcome by most people. A lot of really good fan artists have their own distinctive style anyway so mimicry isn't necessary to be impressive.

I'm wondering if she's actually an alicorn, since that could almost be more magical and not a full transformation. The fact that the dynamic is at least 2 pegasi, one unicorn and either 2 earth ponies or 1 earth pony and an alicorn is weird. Unicorns felt underutilized in the story and their antagonist felt like a joke by comparison to the other two villainous/antagonistic presences

The pegasi only really seemed like a stopping point with the only real threat being sprout in his mech. Still feel like he kinda got let off the hook too easily tho, not even scolded for his actions just left to his devices once again. As for sunny being an alicorn I think that while she’s not quite one I think the horn and wings at the end are a sign she has the potential to become one and there just wasn’t enough magic at that moment to transform her completely but just temporarily give her the properties of one. But I could easily be wrong won’t know til the series itself starts

I’ll be honest I really loved the movie quite a lot. My only criticisms is it tried a little hard to be gen 4 and not it’s own thing at times… but that just felt more like executives butting in. But hey it was pretty much perfect
Ever since G4 came out, the previous generations has gotten a lot of shit, and everyone who loved the previous generations has gotten shit for even daring to like them. I thought we were over that now, but apparently not. No, it’s not pink stupidity. It could be pretty dark at times. And I hate that we still to this day have to defend ourselves for having nostalgia to G1-G3 from people who themselves don’t have any nostalgic memory of it and therefore ”it’s bad”. But anyway I liked the G5 movie.
I remember an old episode where there was a wedding, and the entire plot revolved around the ponies thinking the groom was cheating and trying to catch him cheating-
I mean G1 is where we got Tirek, and Lauren Faust played with MLP toys as a kid and that's how she was convinced to make G4, so it had its moments. It's mainly just that sheer contrast between stuff like Newborn Cuties to G4's quality is so staggering.
One of the trendiest styles for animated series these days is the full-on-color lineless style similar to what's done for Disney's Tangled the Series, or even Netflix's Carmen Sandiego. They used this 2D artstyle for animation within this new MLP film at the start with Twilight and her friends. I want that for the G5 upcoming series next year. It's so current, so modern, and so beautiful, and it's a perfect translation from the 3D style these new pony characters debuted in their premiere film!
If G5 is directly set/loosely directly set after G4, then that would be great. The last 2 seasons of FiM were kinda clunky, rushed and unsatisfying. The last season felt like it was going nowhere and the Discord reveal was bs. Being able to expand upon the established world of FiM, while adding and establishing new elements would be awesome.
The later seasons weren’t good message-wise. Every time the main character of the episode is rightfully upset, they’re seen as the bad guy. And every scene was filled with memeable faces that would otherwise kill a very emotional or serious moment.

i imagine if the g5 mlp cast,and crew have their way they'll add so much stuff to g4 mlp that we might need to really watch g5 mlp,like if when thanksgiving gets here,and we have a big amount of food,it takes most of us awhile to digest it,and then we might not want to eat for awhile,stuff like that,and considering 2022 is just the beggining of g5,if g4 were a view of how this stuff might play out we're going get alot of seasons,specials,and probably another movie before g5 mlp is done galloping,and showing us what these g5 ponies can do,and grow into.
As someone who has never cared to watch the gen 4 MLP, the New Generation film looks good enough for a grown man like me to give it a watch. I am a sucker for cute things and appreciate good animation.

When I saw the trailers, I was so worried this movie would just be mindless pop songs and glitter and celebrity voices because they know it would appeal to kids. But I'm pleasantly surprised at the genuine quality and effort that went in G5
So this is supposed to be, like, hundreds of years after Twilight Sparkle and her friends, and Celestia and Luna have long since died of old age since their retirement? Yes? I actually don't know because I don't get Netflix and I've been kind of out of the fandom proper for over a year now. But that's neat that they're directly referencing G4 as some kind of legend from ages ago. I'm not saying this will take me back into ponies, but it does look pretty okay.
NGL I thought they could live for however long they wanted until some natural disaster came. The princesses in gen4 were like 1000+, same with the crystal ponies. The pillars are also considered a legend in gen4 but were still alive.

I like how they handled Sprout. His sudden yet natural transition from timid deputy to power crazed dictator was so well done. I also appreciate how his own mother decided to avoid reprimanding him in any way, which also feels natural because she was an enabler to his fear mongering, but also avoid accepting or justifying his actions because she actively disagreed with what he had done.
He learned that fear mongering from her. She used it to sell products, he used it to fuel his own narcissisms.
I felt like it was way too sudden. Sprout went from purposely going into one of his moms unicorn catching traps to avoid going after Izzy and securing the citizens' safety to straight up being pony hitler and leading his entire town against everyone else like wtf

I haven’t yet watched the video, but I wanted to comment early to potentially be seen.
I remember when all Saber made was mlp content, and it’s so cool to see him being successful with what’s he’s currently pursuing. I met him at a convention (Ciderfest 2019), and he was super nice. I’m glad to see him put out a video for the movie, as it shows he hasn’t forgotten where he came from.
I’m not sure why, but I adore that they named her Sunny, giving a nudge at Twilight. I know it’s obvious but I didn’t think about it fully until sometime after watching the movie.

I feel like she's în fact a direct descendent of Twilight. I mean, for an ordinary lighthouse in a time where mostly everyone forgot of the mane 6, her home had a lot of ancient mlp symbols. It's also odd how her father seems to be the only one who had his hooves on such old stories
@@lisandepuredream9056 I feel that probably most of the new Mane Five are related to Twilight in some way, with maybe Hitch being the exception. Sunny and her dad with the lighthouse, stories, gem, and most importantly Twilight's symbol on the necklace and book. The Pegasus royals because again, they have the gem, they are ROYAL(relating to Princess Twilight maybe), the Queen and Zipp both instantly recognized Twilight's symbol on Sunny's book, and the stain glass windows in the airport. Izzy's is kinda weak, but she along with the rest (or their family) all have color similarities with Twilight. Zipp not so much, but both her sister and mother do.
She actually reminds me a lot of a Gen 2 design for Sundance
I never really "got into" MLP gen 4, but as a father, I really enjoyed watching the show with my children. It was a very well written show with great characters and great lessons for kids that were presented well without beating you in the head with it like most kids shows (except when it did on purpose and owned it).

Nah I disagree mlp fim was overrated and the later seasons sucked in terms of writing and how they handled the characters.

I have a bizzare reverence for the Brony fandom. So much awful, but so much great at the same time...I...used to be among them. I dont hold much allegiance to them anymore, but its sometimes fun to remember how Equestria was the nation that lived in my heart one day.

As someone who wasn't into the candy-colored pony franchise and only had slight interest in G4, seeing the trailer for G5 made me curious because of how adorable it looked without it being oversaturated. So I had it on in the background while I was drawing at 3 am- it was enjoyable to look at and the writing was clever along with the characters being charming and funny. Looking back on the movie a 2nd time, the amount of detail in the art and designs is admirable; really cute and harmless movie with good writing, very glad it isn't watered down to spoon-feed the kids.

This is how G4 worked so well actually. Mature details (and there was plenty in G4) are concealed in such a way that kids can't get it, but older people will do easily.
I didn't watch much G4 as well back then when the only thing I wanted to watch was Transformers Prime on hub but I watch a little bit back then it was alright for me since you know boys at a young age didn't watch girly stuff not saying it's not for girls though sorry if I offended anyone but I watch a little bit (including the human ones) it was alright for me if Spike and Fluttershy showed

Generation one was largely based on Dungeons and Dragons and according to some, pretty dark, with monsters, kidnapping, fights and ponies running for their lives.
As far as I know My Little Pony was for boys and girls until they decided to focus on girls and amp up the girlyness to eleven in generation two and two plus.
It's curious that you conveniently forget to show fragments from the pilot: escape from midnight castle.
That episode had some grim dark scenes in it and they later recolored a lot of the generation one cartoons, because they thought the older colors where "too dark" for a cartoon for girls.
G1 was still for girls, its just, it was the early 80's. the stark delineation between girls and boys content wasn't as pronounced yet. add to that that cartoons, esp what hasbro was putting out then, tended to be darker then what came later and even now. still hammy, but a generally darker style. G1 mlp was closer to transformers and gi joe in tone. then ofcourse, later, it became what society decided was more "girly".

EVERYTHING in g1 to g3's time period made for girls was the exact same way -- very delicate, simplistic, and feminine. if he thinks a 3-5 year old girl is going to be upset with a show being simplistic, feminine, and frilly, he must not know how awful little kids' memory retention is.
But girls were the main demographic, little girls might I add, I don't think Hasbro really expected grown men to start liking it years later.
I thought it was the other way around, I thought 3D was cheaper to work on larger productions since u work with more deep assets while on 2D u cant reuse all of it, I thought that was the reason we dont have 2D movies anymore in the mainstream, now it's more like a nich thing
These days most 2D animation is made with rigs, just like in 3D, so many of the assets are reusable. That's why gen 4 looked so clean and smooth.
The big price question will come down to rendering. A lot of 2D & 3D programs can work in a similar way but can cost different amounts to render. If I make a 3D block I can project any image on it. If I put flat images on it it will lose its 3D visual but it was very easy to make. A lot of anime will do this for say a class room, bc they can just duplicate out the desks but make them look line drawn.
3d/CGI tends to be cheaper for theatrical productions- as you mention full set reuse is a huge asset and the basics of how you construct a 3d animation don't change through the quality jump from tv to film
2D puppet animation is cheaper than 3D because you also get the advantage of reuse while having less steps in the production process, overall, but if you say, compare the average MLP g4 tv episode to the movie, you'll notice that the animation style is vastly different- i guarantee they made totally new rigs and incorporated a lot more redraw into the process than in the show, where there were probably next to no redraws at all after like.. season 2, and if you want to go full, say, Klaus with film animation, that's immensely more expensive
basically, for tv shows and tv movies, 2D is probably the way to get more polish for less money, 3D is less expensive for full theatrical film still (though they are evening out!! According to the director, Klaus, a fully 2D animated film with no rigging, just frame by frame art, was only marginally more expensive than a similar 3d film would have been)
I think a lot of tv show commentators have a reflexive memory of the visual quality of early cgi tv shows like beast wars that makes them cringe at the thought of tv cgi because it did take so long to catch up as a pleasant visual experience (no shade to beast wars, the plot is genuinely good but you can't deny it's ugly)
2D is more expensive because it is a lot more work to do in a per frame basis while 3D is more expensive to render it good. Movie Animation in the west made the transition to 3D because it is faster to make it look good, faster to animate and as a result it's artists are paid less per frame (and because 3D movies were more well received in the 90's). 2D is better for low budget TV shows because it is less expensive to make a 2D animation look good enough than a low budget 3D one. Just compare Madagascar TV Series (2011) with Adventure Time (2010) to see this in practice.
Just a notice: in the east, 2D is the mainstream because the majority of their animation market is for TV shows, because the asian public didn't care much for the rise of 3D animation and because they underpay A LOT their animators while making them work much more than they would in the west (it's similar to how triple A game developers treat their personel in the west).
I believe it takes more effort and in turn money to make 3D animation look good consistently and sure it may be cheaper to make a movie in CG then in 2D but if you want to make a series look great in CG it takes more money since your not just animating 1-2 hours of media your animating roughly 5 hours of media and that’s if it’s just 12 episodes

There wasn't even a unified villain beyond him and even then, I'd say he was more an antagonist that just took an opportunity and ultimately showed he wasn't a complete monster because he didn't do something that a monster would in the last act.

I liked that one of the crew was male, it's like they realized that boys like it too and threw us a bone. Yes there were dudes in the friendship is magic version but they were side characters that weren't really apart of the "crew". This feels good and not too preachy (in general), just working together for common goals and if that continues I'll be happy but if they reduce hitch's role in the show I'll be kinda bummed about it.

Given how a specialization in magic is a cutie mark, it was always interesting how such a talent would transfer to other ponies, maybe in the future those kinds of ideas can be explored to see how capable certain kinds of magic are outside of relics
I just like how pretty the Pegasus ponies wings are, everything about the character models are more detailed than they ever have been before! They look so good.
I kinda thought Pipps wings were so fluffy because she never exercised them and so she couldn’t fly. The end of the movie obviously nixed that idea though lol

Gen 1 MLP is actually pretty good for a little kids show... The best way I could describe it is that it is probably what you would get if a daycare full of 5-8 year old girls played Dungeons and Dragons, but all their characters were horses. So there not much there for an adult but for a kids show it had a lot of very cool elements.
Very true. I grew up watching the OG MLP and it could be both pretty exciting and surprisingly dark.
Now the follow up My Little Pony Tales on the other hoof... well, maybe the less said about that cartoon the better.
I actually really liked MLPT, it had some fun episodes, and the male ponies actually had some significant roles and character development. It was definitely different.
Not to mention a LOT of SERIOUSLY dark stuff.
Like the episode where all of Ponyland is covered in glass and you're shown disturbingly detailed close ups of the horrified looks on the faces of the ponies turned to glass.

Their is a my little pony RPG like d and d me and my friend play it with her 6 yer old it’s quite good as pen and paper RPG and I’ve been playing d and d for about 20 yers so not a noob
Yeah, thank you! I hate people describing it as "Girly dumb fluff for dumb babies," I haven't watched it since I was a kid but I very clearly remember a few episodes being pretty scary and hardcore for a 7 year old!
It's also what first got me into adventure-type stories instead of the "Princess waits for hero to save her" stories that were typical of the time.
I have a feeling the show is going to be about how they're actually going to get along and will hopefully give us some background on how they all ended up segregated.
Also this movie is great and my only nitpick is how underused Hitch is. Especially during the dance off smh.

@@PinkSneaselGirl So far it has been so much World Building in them, but it doesn't focus on the time after The Last Problem, they focus on the time after they defeat Cozy, Chrysalis and Tirek and are exploring new lands with their own "Frienship trees" each one of them with a different group of side characters, with the leader being one of the main six, from what i remember, we've seen Zecora's land, Capper's land, Captain Cellano's land, fun fact, She is a lesbian, and some more that right now i can't remember, but the big bads that right now they are fighting are called the Knights of Friendship, which created all of the trees of friendship for every land that wasn't equestria, and they want to destroy pony kind for some reason i can't remember
But the point is they probably won't focus on how equestria got this bad, because equestria got divided after the Last Problem most likely, and what we are focusing on right now is before that so it's very probable we won't get an answer as to how it got divides, but were getting very fun worldbuilding, and, fun fact, one of Zecora's friends in the land of the Zebras is non binary, yeah that happened, but also for now there aren't any clues as to how many characters got into how they are in the last problem, for example we haven't seen Rainbow Dash and Applejack spend any time together, or Fluttershy with Discord, or Gallas wanting to be a royal guard...

I was honestly surprised by how explicit the message was. It's very rare I see childrens' movies depict bigotry in a way that felt so scarily real. Even though I admit it was a lot for me at first, after I got over the initial shock I came to appreciate how the message was delivered. Easily changed it from your basic "be nice to everyone despite their differences" movie with a kind of implied allegory to a straight up "don't be r@c1st movie". This could 100% be an overreaction on my part, but I really can't say I was expecting something like that from a My Little Pony movie. Either that, or I really need to up my standards lol.
I saw more than racism being depicted; I saw what happens to a world run by fear and propaganda. Its already happening in our world. Its more than This Race against That Race. Its Vaxxed vs Unvaxxed, Straight vs LGBT, Female vs Male, Religion vs Other Religions, arguing over differences. Together we stand, divided we fall. I saw what our own world will turn into if we continue to let our differences divide us. To me Sunny and her dad represented those who dare to speak the truth in a brainwashed society. But maybe I've just wrapped my brain in tinfoil 🤷

you know it kind of reminded me of the Winnie-the-Pooh _Heffalump_ movie! That also had similar themes and messages on xenophobia and intolerance, and it dealt with it in a pretty conscientious and profound way for a kid's movie. That was actually the first film I saw in theaters, and rewatching it recently I'd still definitely recommend! It's on Netflix I think if anyone wants to check it out :)

I'm excited to see what they do from where this movie jumped off from. Because this implies that the era Sunny and company are in is a distant future from when Equestria was under the rule of Alicorn Princesses. From what Celestia and Luna implied is that they won't live forever. This would, also, mean that Twilight probably passed on in the maybe not-so-distant past, which may have resulted in a panic among all. Maybe. I can't be sure though! It's all theory right now. I'm so excited.

I feel 17 again. Falling in love with ponies, listening to the villain songs over and over again, drawing! I haven't drawn in months, and suddenly I'm doodling for hours! MLP really does have my whole heart.
Hoof to heart-
I felt like there’s a scene in the ending that everyone came together and put the lighthouse back the way it was (with the help of magic) but time and budget didn’t allow it. The thought that Sunny is now homeless is so sad. Or maybe they’re saving it for 44 minutes special coming later, discover more clues from secrets hidden in the lighthouse while they’re rebuilding it.
I adore the film, it’s straight forward and love the musical numbers. Although I felt like was a miss opportunity for them to not go deep into how the Pegasus, unicorns, and earth ponies were divided in the first place. Would’ve been interesting

This was an introduction to a new generation and new characters. They didn't have time to explain all of that, and it was best saved for the show

As someone who wasn’t really a fan of the animated series, I’ve got to say this movie was really cute. I initially wanted to watch it because the animation looked nice, but I didn’t expect much more than that. I was pleasantly surprised!
The theorists and analysts of the fandom have already started going to town on this movie trying to catch every single connection and reference they can. Did anybody else notice that the Pegasus and unicorn in the mural have a golden pair of wings and horn? Or how about the fact that Argyle had a picture of an ancient relic from the Equestria Girls series in his lighthouse (specifically, a relic that makes people/ponies forget about whatever the user wants them to forget). We’re going to be picking this movie apart for a while, and I’m nothing but excited for the new series coming out next year!
That's just to allude to the magical horn and wings Sunny gets at the end. The movie otherwise contradicts FiM - since when did pegasi need magic to fly? Does that mean gryphons, or even birds cannot fly without magic???

I grew up with mlp G4 and I got my boyfriend, who really didn't like or want to like mlp, to watch this with me. And he ACTUALLY enjoyed the movie. I think there being an actual male a part of the Mane5 helped. He really liked Hitch and I am so excited to possibly watch the series with him.
the main thing that I noticed about the film was the animation, there was so much quality to it, one thing in particular (I noticed this in Riya and the last dragon too), was THE EYES and I don't just mean the colours or details, I mean the effort! they did that thing where the eyes actually moved when they were staying still, if there was ever a close up on the eyes they would be slightly flickering from side to side, taking in all the details!

If you look at their eyes closely, you can actually see reflections of what the ponies are looking at. And the tufts of hair on the fetlocks - amazing animation and attention to details!
Definitely a step up from G4. I think we all remember the multitude of errors and issues that G4 had in its animation. Hell, a beloved character within the community was the result of an animation error.
I'm not going to lie, this movie was starting on a backfoot with me. Set in the same world, with unfamiliar elements but in 3D, like you said. I had my reservations. And I have to admit, if this movie was just passable, I would have shat all over it. Said it is a downhill run and was trash up and down. But, despite that, it put it's foot up and prepared itself. The story is interesting, they didn't answer questions that didn't need them (At the moment.) and the songs were catchy and hum-worthy. Whether this becomes a series or not is still a mystery, but I did really enjoy this movie.

The movie was okay, but I feel like this MLP lacked the healthy sublety of FIM.
FIM dealt with rac/sm and fearmongering (a core theme in this whole movie) far better. I mean irl, you don't often see someone rallying a whole town to make a robot so you can attack an entire race of ponies. However you may see snarky, rude, or condescending behvaiour towards someone who is different.
I enjoyed the movie, but I wish it wasn't so cartoonishly in your face. It's a cartoon, but do the earth ponies really need to make an actual cult? I worry this series will lack the nuance that the first few seasons of FIM had. Hopefully it goes well though, I like the variety in character design.

Honestly, I like how the movie looks, but I feel like the plot of the movie was really rushed. They just sorta showed up in places, "we need the MacGuffin" somebody gets it for them, and then at the end, (SPOILER ALERT) the MacGuffin was inside of us all along. I feel like everywhere they went wasn't a big journey, it was like, an hour's walk at most. There was just too much packed into a small space, I didn't really get time to appreciate any of the characters. The characters barely ever fought with eachother, they just got kind of bitter at one point and got over it because campfires or something.
It wasn't a terrible movie for me, though. The movie looks great as I wrote before, and I really like the new direction the story is going in. I like that the problem they'll be facing is of a bigger scale this time, and that the characters aren't just copies of the last cast. I never look at the characters and think "oh that's the new Rarity" or "there's the new Fluttershy". I'm really hoping to learn a bit more about the characters in the upcoming series!
It is still for kids so yeah but while sunny and pip are new character types especially pip reflecting modern social media zipp is like new rainbow but a lot less modest while izzy feels like a mixture between rarity and pinkie having raritys creativity with pinkie pies fun energy and i love it

If it was such an important artifact, why are we just now learning about it? Making this a sequel to g4 just raises way too many problems.
I feel like the sort of felt/fleece bump mapping they did for the fur was a really nice touch. I feel like a lesser studio would have either made every character smooth jigglypuff looking things with no texture at all, or attempted to go the Zootopia route with hyper realistic hair and ended up with that mangey first draft Sonic the Hedgehog look. This middle ground was the best of all worlds. It was within their means, it didn't break the budget, and it still looked really really nice.
Despite the film's occasional misstep, which I cannot deny it had, it really feels like the folks behind it understood the essence of what we all enjoyed in G4. It's fun, it's got a strong grasp of both levity and gravity, and at the end of the movie I wanted to see more of these characters, which is the biggest thing a pilot movie needs to accomplish.
I also feel like this movie did the whole... "pony racism" thing a lot better than G4 ever did. G4 tried so many times and it failed very consistently. I cannot give it any credit on that. With the way it was handled in G5, it really hit me when the foals were playing their game pretending to be unicorns and kill each other, that like, oh hang on, this is the "Cowboys and Indians" kind of racism. And carrying that attitude through the metaphor made it seem a lot more realistic and sincere than it ever was in G4. That's not to say it's perfect here either, but if they insist on continuing to try it, they're at least moving in the right direction.

I adored this movie I just want to preface. I think the amount of plot holes or weak character motivation equals the amount of foreshadowing for the tv show. Which at the end of the day I don’t have a problem with. This is a movie for kids and the preface to a whole tv series, not everything is going to be solid in the story telling just yet, especially when the real content hasn’t been written yet. Also the songs were in fact awesome, I’m in total agreement there. Oh and I would sacrifice myself for Izzy, I adore her.

Can't believe I totally missed this till now. MLP is a bit of a comfort show for me, so I'm cautiously optimistic about this.
It's good. It's comfy. And it doesn't abandon the allegorical nature of so much of the storytelling in G4 - if you liked G4 I recommend it for sure.

Although it's "contained" without big events or villains taking place, I actually enjoyed the movie more so.
To me it was an "imaginary slice of life" scenario, which I completely adore. It allowed to focus on establishing character personalities and giving us a scoop of what's going on without it being too much.
I legitimately love the episode about Princess Luna dealing with her own guilt with the Inception vibes of dreams. I cried like a baby at the end of it, but the moment I told some friends that I liked that episode, I was accused of being a brony… I mean, I’m a woman but ok? So, no judgement from me, I unabashedly love that show and enjoyed the new movie. Makes it easier to watch it when I have a 3 year old daughter who loves it too lol

Best I can make of it without them having provided any other details is, at some point, Twilight must've instructed each tribe to present a crystal which she and the rest of the Mane 6 infused with a massive amount of magic.
For what reason, we can only speculate at this point.
Perhaps Twilight and the others actually became the magic itself infused into the crystals?
And, without Twilight and the others as guiding lights, arguments broke out among the tribes that resulted in each tribe taking back their piece of the crystal out of spite, not realising that's why magic went away?
There's always the possibility they might come back in a similar way that the Pillars did, but on top of just them, it's also interesting to wonder how far the lack of magic actually went conerning all life on the planet on top of all powerful magic users in at least Equestria

Just watched the Movie, and let me tell you: YEEESSS!!
I was worried about the new Generation when it was announced, just like everyone else, but I gotta say, I like the way they're heading. Having the setting be the same as Gen 4 but many many moons later allows for changes in the world that we are already familiar with and fond of. The movie was made with a lot of love and care put in, additionally with respect to Gen 4, which just mmm I'm eating it up.
I believe that the show will start where the movie left off, and follow the ponies learning to trust each other again and learning what happened between them all so long ago.
(Also hoping for a Twilight cameo, since Alicorn, semi-immortal, you know. But that's just a preference thing because I miss my baby)
Anyways, can't wait to see what the team has been cooking up! Guess I'll never escape these ponies

This felt more like a bookend of a G4 season.. instead of The Two Sisters being the ancient legend this time though, it's Twilight and the magic of harmony/friendship, which is honestly much better represented by the stones fitting together then they ever were with the elements.
eh, I can't fully agree. I feel like the element gems matching with their personalities was a nice touch, because it wasn't about the three ponies. it was about friendship, and how the power of friends working together is more powerful than anything else.

During the end credits, I saw three fillies of each group playing, and I think we are looking at a new generation of Cutie Mark Crusaders.
I'm kind of confused by where they took the story. There was already a backstory in G4 where the Earth, pegasus, and unicorns were segregated and Equestria was founded when they united, and thousands of years later, they've blended in together perfectly. It just feels odd for that progress to regress so much.

History rarely repeats itself but it often rhymes. One bad ruler chosen for good intentions can really isolate your country and make a horrific mess of things. I honestly like the way it went. showing that a good change rarely lasts forever and everything can break. we will see where this will go from now on, but people shouldn't expect a big focus on the history lessons as it will probably be something for us to discover.
I always found it weird how fans are angry that the good Twilight times didn't last forever (and somehow assume it's twilights fault). You can't say it was all meaningless as there were probably generations of ponies living in those good times. This is a good backdrop for the new show as it lets them introduce similar lessons to those in G4 without making G4 a mandatory watch. They just want this gen to stand on their own and not be just a companion piece to G4 like most fans want.
It could be a prequel or another universe. There's a little reference to the G4 pony toys in the trailer but it doesn't automatically mean they are canon characters there.

As a male myself, I watched "my little pony" as a kid, and I gave it a thumbs up, my parents don't recommend me to watch it, because it was made for girls(or that's what at least they think), I like it for its animation, plot, and all that stuff. I hate when people make fun of me based on my interests(like when my brother found out that I liked anime and he calls me a "weeb). So, don't worry, Saberspark, if you love "my little pony" so do I.
I feel you. I'm a girl but I thought this was only for kids. I watched the mlp g4 because one of my friend liked it and I gave it a go. Now, I'm waiting for the g5 series to release and have something to watch. I'm still waiting for the dragon prince season 4 for over a year and I'd like if the mlp g5 series would come out early 2022. I'm bored of youtube and I have absolutely no series to watch now. I'm just a desperate person for new videos or series to come out really fast.

The series definitely won’t be as technically polished as the movie, but I wouldn’t worry too much about cost bringing down the quality: one of the major advantages of 3d animation is that it’s super easy to reuse assets. The entry cost is much higher than 2d, but 3d is much cheaper over a long period of time, especially when the movie has created a large bank of high-quality stock assets that the animators can draw on for years to come.
They did the same thing with Jimmy neutron. Make movie assets with movie budget, reuse movie assets to create high quality renders on a TV budget.
@@josebarrera2272 Exactly, plus MLP has an extra shortcut inherent to it’s toy-selling nature: new characters can easily be made by tweaking and recolouring stock templates, and more off-model characters can still be based off of the default rigging. FiM used similar shortcuts even in flash, they’ve been very smart about being economical with assets, and I think that’s what lets them put more time and effort into actually animating.
My worry is that the grizzled ancients in charge at Hasbro won't understand the value of reusing digital assets; At present they appear to be hiring an entirely different team and maybe using a different production company: if the current production company holds the rights to all the 3D media generated and they can't buy or license them, then they would have to start over. And if they don't realize the complexity of doing that, they might just start over to avoid what they think is the more expensive route. I do hope they are going with the Jimmy Neutron strategy though... only time will tell.
@@michaelperrone3867: Maybe, but Hasbro has a pretty good track record when it comes to media adaptations. Just look at the various incarnations of Transformers, and after the success of _Friendship is Magic_ I think Hasbro sees the potential for MLP to be just as big. I wouldn't expect them to cheep out now.
I hope they move to 2D, for one reason: fanartists. The G4 pony design was made up of simple lines and basic shapes, practically anyone could draw one with a bit of basic talent and practice. This made the bar for entering the fanart community of MLP astronomically low, which potentially led to a greater influx of fans who could see themselves in the show via OCs. If they stick with the 3D style for G5, I'm concerned that people are going to have a much harder time overcoming the entry into fanart that looks like it could be in the show. It remains to be seen, but that's my opinion on the styling of the new ponies.
Challenge accepted. I'll draw in 2d one of the character in the movie. And I don't think that they'll go back to 2d animation for the series. Though, they had to draw the new characters in 2d before making them in 3d. My drawing will be made on my computer and I'll post it on reddit.

These 3D designs aren't really more complicated though. The proportions are a little different and the HD details might feel more intimidating but I don't think they're that far off from Gen 4 if you compare the two 3D movies. But since it's 3D anyway there will always be a slight disconnect, unless they model a pony in a 3D program (which is entirely possible.) So, what will matter more is the artist's skill and imagination being decent at best, if it's 2D, and that can be overcome by most people. A lot of really good fan artists have their own distinctive style anyway so mimicry isn't necessary to be impressive.

Discord was and is still my favourite character to this day but if they are going to incorporate him into gen 5 they are gonna have to address the elephant in the room how is discord copping with fluttershy death and how is discord getting by without magic (unless he’s not effected by whatever took all the magic in equestria away)

I’ve been a MLP fan pretty much my whole life, and what kinda bummed me out is they didn’t use any of the old school characters. Gen 4 brought new life to iconic characters such as Pinky Pie and Spike , I wish they’d brought back a couple oldies who weren’t in Friendship is Magic like Minty and Sundance

Can we appreciate the foreshadowing of Sunny becaming an alicorn when she got trapped in those traps that made her have wings and a Horn? (At least I think it was foreshadowing lol)
I'm wondering if she's actually an alicorn, since that could almost be more magical and not a full transformation. The fact that the dynamic is at least 2 pegasi, one unicorn and either 2 earth ponies or 1 earth pony and an alicorn is weird. Unicorns felt underutilized in the story and their antagonist felt like a joke by comparison to the other two villainous/antagonistic presences
I’m just wondering if she’s gonna remain an alicorn for the whole series or was that a temporary/reversible thing? Like how in SVTFOE star could change into her butterfly form at will
@@ToHoldNothing that could be because of how they were acting overall to not having magic anymore. The pegasi only really seemed like a stopping point with the only real threat being sprout in his mech. Still feel like he kinda got let off the hook too easily tho, not even scolded for his actions just left to his devices once again. As for sunny being an alicorn I think that while she’s not quite one I think the horn and wings at the end are a sign she has the potential to become one and there just wasn’t enough magic at that moment to transform her completely but just temporarily give her the properties of one. But I could easily be wrong won’t know til the series itself starts
@@Dratspider And that was even more disappointing in a way, though I have to wonder if fans have done a universe where unicorns had to deal with losing their magic and do it in a way that doesn't feel like they're really just the butt of a joke with their superstitions and such
The plotting was probably the part that ruined it for me, though even characterization felt spotty, like Hitch was more an afterthought and we only really got one fleshed out unicorn, Alphabittle barely registered, I remember his freaking armadillo pets more
@@puppies24ful It reminds me of Snow Queen Mirrorlands where they really jumped the shark and made the one character that didn't need to have magic actually get magic to resolve the big plot point.
4 films and only the first one really worked well. And a series is supposedly planned too, but it took 2+ years to even get the 4th movie on DVD

I’ll be honest I really loved the movie quite a lot. My only criticisms is it tried a little hard to be gen 4 and not it’s own thing at times… but that just felt more like executives butting in. But hey it was pretty much perfect
Ever since G4 came out, the previous generations has gotten a lot of shit, and everyone who loved the previous generations has gotten shit for even daring to like them. I thought we were over that now, but apparently not. No, it’s not pink stupidity. It could be pretty dark at times. And I hate that we still to this day have to defend ourselves for having nostalgia to G1-G3 from people who themselves don’t have any nostalgic memory of it and therefore ”it’s bad”.
But anyway I liked the G5 movie.

I remember an old episode where there was a wedding, and the entire plot revolved around the ponies thinking the groom was cheating and trying to catch him cheating-
I mean G1 is where we got Tirek, and Lauren Faust played with MLP toys as a kid and that's how she was convinced to make G4, so it had its moments. It's mainly just that sheer contrast between stuff like Newborn Cuties to G4's quality is so staggering.

One of the trendiest styles for animated series these days is the full-on-color lineless style similar to what's done for Disney's Tangled the Series, or even Netflix's Carmen Sandiego. They used this 2D artstyle for animation within this new MLP film at the start with Twilight and her friends. I want that for the G5 upcoming series next year. It's so current, so modern, and so beautiful, and it's a perfect translation from the 3D style these new pony characters debuted in their premiere film!
If G5 is directly set/loosely directly set after G4, then that would be great. The last 2 seasons of FiM were kinda clunky, rushed and unsatisfying. The last season felt like it was going nowhere and the Discord reveal was bs. Being able to expand upon the established world of FiM, while adding and establishing new elements would be awesome.
FIM ran out of steam after season 7. That should have been the last season.
The later seasons weren’t good message-wise. Every time the main character of the episode is rightfully upset, they’re seen as the bad guy. And every scene was filled with memeable faces that would otherwise kill a very emotional or serious moment.
@@BronyBoy5463 I'm glad someone else has mentioned the dumb facial expressions in seasons 8 and 9. Every time I watch an episode from those seasons it annoys the hell out of me. It's so cringey. I have to wonder what the animators were thinking.

i imagine if the g5 mlp cast,and crew have their way they'll add so much stuff to g4 mlp that we might need to really watch g5 mlp,like if when thanksgiving gets here,and we have a big amount of food,it takes most of us awhile to digest it,and then we might not want to eat for awhile,stuff like that,and considering 2022 is just the beggining of g5,if g4 were a view of how this stuff might play out we're going get alot of seasons,specials,and probably another movie before g5 mlp is done galloping,and showing us what these g5 ponies can do,and grow into.
As someone who has never cared to watch the gen 4 MLP, the New Generation film looks good enough for a grown man like me to give it a watch. I am a sucker for cute things and appreciate good animation.
Heck, if one doesn't want to watch the series, the 2017 movie is a decent encapsulation and I don't think you need to have seen the series to fully appreciate it

When I saw the trailers, I was so worried this movie would just be mindless pop songs and glitter and celebrity voices because they know it would appeal to kids. But I'm pleasantly surprised at the genuine quality and effort that went in G5
So this is supposed to be, like, hundreds of years after Twilight Sparkle and her friends, and Celestia and Luna have long since died of old age since their retirement? Yes? I actually don't know because I don't get Netflix and I've been kind of out of the fandom proper for over a year now. But that's neat that they're directly referencing G4 as some kind of legend from ages ago. I'm not saying this will take me back into ponies, but it does look pretty okay.
NGL I thought they could live for however long they wanted until some natural disaster came. The princesses in gen4 were like 1000+, same with the crystal ponies. The pillars are also considered a legend in gen4 but were still alive.
Let's assume it's been at least a little longer than the time difference between the Six Pillars era and the Elements of Harmony Era

At first, I was sad My Little Pony *G4* is going to end and replacing it with another MLP *G5* version but now I just accepted and acknowledge the new version of it. And make new fun memories with these new characters. Honestly, I cried when I watched the movie... XD
