- I am tired of people talking about this so to clarify: Every clip here is Ariana. She recorded the demo for Demi's song "You're My Only Shorty." They both have their own versions of the song.
The 'c#3' is really an Eb3. I knew it was mislabeled but for some reason a bunch of people thought it was C#. There are a couple other errors here but that's the only really important one.

The original was inaccurate, plus I got some more notes to add in, so I removed the first one and added this one back in. Hopefully it's more satisfactory, but tell me any mistakes (in a polite way)! :)
for a girl who wasn't allowed in choir at her school has such an amazing voice. she is such an inspiration to those who want to sing as great as her.

Sophia Gallegos Yarrow I am a singer and it’s really advanced to sing that high (except in falsetto) even when most people sing in mixed voice, they can’t even get past a E5
Pretty amazing how a trained ear can detect all the different notes and ranges and I’m just sitting here like “oh that sounds nice...that sounds nice too” 🙃
I'm sure there are people like that, but I'm sure there are also equipment that can detect a note :)

Ariana got "You're My Only Shawty" for her birthday, from Iyaz, then they sold it to Demi so she could finish her album, But Demi Changes it a little bit, She also names it "You're My Only Shorty" Not Shawty, Shorty

I used to watch this so many times back in the day, makes me so happy to come back to this.
Her voice has gotten so much more powerful and lovely since then. really matured.
She has improved in her high notes a looot, but her low notes are less powerful, I love her but..
honestly a lot of her low notes are actually good now but she barely ever uses them

Strengths: naturally agile voice, connected head voice (she really ought to focus more on that and less on trying to whistle), pretty good breath control
Weaknesses: pretty weak vibrato, not-great intonation, little support on lows, tonal production on highs is sometimes not good, loses sense of direction/ pitch during runs, doesn't resonate very well in any area of her voice

***** heard many people do it... but out of tune and with no control.. there's more to whistle tone than just "aahhhh" even if on tune.

the only reason why there are dislikes is because THOSE people aren't musically inclined and don't care about the notes she sings.. SOME people do. i rather enjoyed this thank you.

Recommended Listenings: Emotions, The Way
Positives: A vocal actress, being able to mimic the tones and voices of Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and Celine Dion.
Her lower register, though often weak and inconsistent (due to her high tessitura and breath support issues), is relatively strong for a soprano, supporting down to F#3 and extending to D3.
Her belts are achieved through mixing, having stretched up to Bb5's successfully; Grande also has no issue staying in the soprano tessitura for extended periods of time (see live performances of Break Free, Dangerous Woman and Focus). Her belting register as a whole is extensive and reaches up to an impressive B5. Capable of complex, fast melismas (see Hands on Me and Problem). A rolling vibrato can be heard in belts up to G#5 and as low as Bb3.
Her falsetto is light and sweet and is also where the voice finds its 'ring,' being bright and healthy up to Eb6.
The whistle register is piercing, and the whistles don't have disconnected tones attached to them (polyphonic tones). She is able to sing vocal runs in this register (See Emotions).
Negatives: The previously mentioned mixed belts generally lack power and the whistle register is not controlled (something she has admitted herself). Her slightly nasal and feminine tone is also polarizing. Her diction is unpolished, leaving her lyrics incomprehensible at points (see the bridge of Break Free) due to tongue tension. Grande also over activates muscles in her jaw - mostly while singing runs - furthering this tongue tension, which in turn changes the positioning of the larynx. Intonation live has proven to be a problem at points (around 2013), and the lower register sounds unsupported in most instances. Her support is also inconsistent, ranging from around G3-C#5, above C5/C#5 she raises her larynx.
This is my first time hearing her sing. I got curious after hearing about her, having had a whistle register before a lifesaving intubation. I'm going to go back to listening to Maria Callas now. A large range is nothing without continuity and richness of tone. I'll try her again once she has a few more years under her belt, if she's still able to sing.

Well that's a choral thing, and choral settings divide singers into voice PARTS, not types. The voice part alto can refer to both the contralto and mezzosoprano voice TYPES. Much more is put into determining a voice type than into a part for a chorale. Mariah is a lyric coloratura soprano, due to the facts that her voice is flexible and brightens drastically as she ascends from her lower register to middle into the upper register.

She can work on supporting her lower register, having better intonation when she sings her high mixed notes, resonating more across her range, enunciating, and incorporating a wider range of dynamics into her singing. Natural talent only takes you so far... There are vocalists who are older and more skilled to her who are still improving, so the "how can she possibly improve" question is kind of null and void.

The first time I heard Ariana sing on "Victorious" I said this girl is something special. I wouldn't compare her to anyone else. She is an amazing talent (synecdoche). Let her be herself and develop her own style. whatever she does with her gift, I'm a forever fan. "Sing, Angel of Music"

@CLEYOMAN you're both kind of right. Good technique helps preserve a voice, if it's starting in good condition especially, but age affects nearly everyone. If someone starts with a voice in healthy condition and her great technique, time won't treat them too badly. In the case of someone like Mariah, technique all on its own isn't enough cuz she has a vocal condition (nodules) so time affects her more than the average person. I hope she gets them operated on...
C#3 and Eb3 are inaudible.

An octave is a set of eight notes running up or down a scale. For example if you start at middle C and go up- or down- to the next C note there will be eight notes in between.

Agreed. I actually have no idea what that person is talking about who mentioned auto-tune, I don't hear it. It also irritates me when people don't know the difference between harmonization and auto-tune.

You probably need to develop your ear to technique a bit more, but her low register IS effortless.
Listen carefully: Pin point accurate pitch, well controlled breath, smoky and pleasant tone, well supported from the diaphragm. EASILY accessible from any region of her voice. Listen to her "Love the Way you Lie". She goes back and forth between low and high without rough transition.
The only weak part of Ariana's voice, technique wise, is her whistle register, which she's only begun exploring.

It's kinda sad that people bash Ariana because they think that she "fakes" those whistle notes when she covered the song, "Emotions" but she uploaded another video showing she CAN do it. I don't get why people would get angry at her when she can do something other singers (or vocalists) can't do and she also said that she's not used to going in the whistle register because she's not comfortable with it and might hurt her vocals. Good on her for not pushing her vocals to the max, unlike Xtina. :P
Good video! I like her head voice & whistle. She has some nice belts but mostly they are weak and whiny. Once again good job at video! :)
That's a hell of a vocal range!
Well, I'm not talking about her success. I'm talking about her talent level. She will definitely get better than now. She has tons to learn and her nearly flawless technique ensures that her voice is deteriorating very very slowly. Neutral larynx, effortless low register, strainless belting, superb mixing, and proper diaphragm support and breath control
It's not perfect technique but it's brilliant enough to keep her voice healthy for years to come. Her tone is AMAZING but it's not for everyone

Man I am right with you! I honestly think she's gotten worse since this video. But I don't know, maybe now that she's had that hemorrage, she'll improve her technique. I do like her timbre though(her real one, not that fake "Kat" voice she does) and her music is pretty good.

No, but you are still learning. At some point, you won't be able to become faster than the accumulation of vocal deterioration and that is when you've passed your prime. Ariana is still getting much much better. She has excellent technique, so her voice isn't deteriorating. Vocal nodules are something else. As long as she takes care of her voice, she won't have to worry about those for awhile.

I find it amazing that she already belts higher than Christina, Mariah, and Whitney, and she didn't even release her first album yet AND she is only 18! She also whistles the same as Christina. Her and Demi are definitely the voices of their generation!

Mine is D2 to C6.
What's my range in octaves, my lowest note is E1, my highest chest note is G#5 with mixing, my highest head voice note is about Eb6, my highest note overall is F#7 in whistle register. I'vs gone through puberty, but I developed some sort of nodule thong that doesn't cause any problems, but I can easily go high. So anyway, what's my octave range???

mariahs voice is hard to classify but she is a lyrical coloratora soprano. she is an alto while talking because her talking voice is extremely low.

You were trying to say her voice is "drowned in autotune," which I disproved, now you're complaining that she hasn't hit every single note in Emotions live. Alright, her range on that song is E3-F#5-E7. Her live range is Eb3-B5-C7. Please, excuse the entire two notes of whistle register she hasn't done live yet.
