  • Assembling and testing this metal detector kit. Easy to assemble, all through hole parts and not very complex to work with.
    A big resource of info on all sorts of metal detector circuits I found helpful in analyzing how this circuit works:

    I tried making this at home without the kit..and it worked. The schematic from talking electronics really helped.

    This would work well for detecting in a hole that you've already excavated. Keeps you from waving all your stuff in front of your big coil on a large detector. The primary reason it doesn't pick up distant objects is that the coil is not large enough. It's essentially an aerial antenna, and has to have a large enough coil to transmit a full wave at the frequency it's tuned for. Large loops - Loops with perimeter of a full wavelength, two wavelengths, or any whole-number multiple of a full-wavelength, are naturally resonant and act somewhat similarly to the full-wave or multi-wave dipole. When it is necessary to distinguish them from small loops, they are called "full-wave" loops.[a][2][9] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antenna_types

    I've never soldered before now. Bought this kit and assembled. It works !!!!!! Gonna order another kit. Think I'll try one of the DIY radio kits.

    also, can you quickly just explain why there is 3 contacts on the coil to the circuit as ive never seen a coil with more then 2 contacts before :/

      there’s lots of different types of coils including transformers where there can be a centre tap so three connections with one in the middle, and this one works similar to that even though I think the middle tap point is only one or two loops of the entire coil.
      so with three wires, the two outside ones can be thought of as one bigger coil but then between one outside and the middle or the other outside and the middle can also be taken as two smaller coils with a common connection in the middle.
      in this circuit the part that taps off after a couple of turns behaves like a pick up coil being placed near the other large coil section, and the circuit can put that to use when the magnetic field is disrupted by metal objects, I forget exactly how it works but I think I explained the circuit in the video

    These switches are annoying because you can put them either way, they have a two sets of NO-COM-NC contacts, so you get inverted push action when you put it wrong

      Yeah if I was going to use that kit beyond the day I assembled it I might have taken the effort of getting the heat gun out and trying to fix it but I think if I ever take the switch out it’s going to be because I’m going to put it in another project so it’s probably going to sit in the basement in a box for seven years before I see it again.

    @Gadget Reboot>> do you know if a DIY COIL can be soldered on to this board exactle as is on the circular plate points? i've been looking for videos to see if anyone has tried to fix their own coil to see if it actually works but no luck as of yet.

      ps i've only got 1 of these kits spare which is a reference (not to build) so can't really experiment myself as i dont have a spare kit to test my own coil on :/

    • @GadgetReboot
      @GadgetReboot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would guess that if the onboard coil connections were severed to take it out of the circuit and an external coil were attached instead, it should still work but I haven’t tried. I think I saw some do it yourself projects where people made their own coils so maybe those types of resources have more information on connecting a coil to a circuit successfully.

      I don’t have the materials to make my own coils right now and I don’t really have a practical use for it myself so all the other ongoing projects would probably dominate my time

    It cannot help you to treasure hunting due to it can detect short range.
