***** It's called bump and run coverage. That's not holding. See that in every game when team's are near the goal line. Unless the defender actually prevents the receiver from getting off the line by grabbing him and not letting go, it's not holding, and therefore not a flag.
Gamble simply dropped the pass, before he and Glenn Sharpe even made contact.

With about 2 minutes left in the game, Ohio State had a 3rd and 10. Krenzel completed a pass to Gamble, who was held multiple times on the play. The ref called it incomplete despite Gamble being clearly inbounds. That allowed Miami to get the tying field goal.

The ref was 110% sure. He said so after the game too and the call was ruled correct by the National Association of Sports Officials. Sharpe did not stay off Gamble til the ball got there. The ref said Gamble was being held the whole time. I'll take the word of the guy who was 10 feet from the play.

Babbling about calls and/or no-calls earlier in the game is cute for crybabies to do. But 4th & goal in OT with the game on the line? Yeah, that call NEEDED to made correctly, and as a fan who hates Miami with a seething passion, I’m here to tell you it was butchered to hell & back! That was a beyond a gift from the Zebras. It was literally STEALING a National Title AWAY from Miami & GIVING it to a program that did NOT actually “win it” on the field! Insofar as Miami is perhaps the dirtiest, slimiest program that’s ever existed, people shed no tears for them on getting ROBBED. Couldn’t have happened to a better group of thugs. With 2:18 remaining in the game with the Buckeyes leading 17-14, Ohio State faced a third-and-long. Chris Gamble ran a simple out route toward the Ohio State sideline but his jersey was grabbed by Miami cornerback Glen Sharpe, just as he made his cut. Replays clearly showed the infraction. But get this: Gamble caught Craig Krenzel’s pass INBOUNDS as he rolled toward the sideline.
Not only did the same official, Terry Porter, of the Big 12 Conference officiating crew, not call the defensive holding penalty, officials ruled the play an incomplete pass. Tape of the play clearly showed that Gamble caught the pass inbounds, but it was replayed only once during the broadcast of the game. Remember, this was before the replay system had been implemented in college football.
If the officials had called either the defensive holding or ruled the pass complete, Ohio State would have been awarded a first down, then Krenzel would have kneeled down three times to end the game. Ohio State would have won the game, 17-14, in regulation. Miami then kicked a game-tying field goal on the final play of regulation.

Looking back on it, Miami should have won 3 years in a row, 2000, 2001, 2002. The year 2000, the BCS standings were 1 Oklahoma 2 Florida State 3 Miami, and Miami and Florida State were both 11-1 and Miami beat Florida State head to head. But because the NCAA and the people who do the polls every week hate Miami, They made Oklahoma play Florida State instead of Miami whom they should have played. No surprise Florida State only scored 2 points in the Championship game and lost 13-2 to Oklahoma. Miami would have beat Oklahoma that year if the polls gave them a chance to play them, so they got screwed in 2000. They won in 2001 which they had the best team. Then 2002 the national championship game was clearly over, then a crooked referee throws a bad late flag, which took the championship away from Miami in 2002.

+MikeNJ27 I and most everyone else alive believed that Miami should have been ranked #2 above FSU,. However, "people's hatred" of Miami had nothing to do with FSU overtaking the #2 slot in order to be included in the championship game against Oklahoma.
The BCS polls at this time consisted of three equally weighted elements: (1) AP Poll, (2) ESPN/Coaches Poll, and (3) Computer Rankings (the average of eight computer models). Only the AP Poll and the ESPN poll contained the "human elements", and both of these polls had Miami ranked #2. However, the computer rankings had FSU, Oklahoma, and Miami ranked #1, #2, and #3, respectively, and it was these computer models which are void of emotions that tilted the final poll in favor of FSU.

The reason it looked like pass interference was Chris Gamble dropped the ball and how he was positioned, the defender was in between his path (wouldnt have caught it anyway) and the ball. So it looks like there was interference.. I always thought once a receiver tips the ball, contact is allowed. I guess they felt he should have been given a chance to try and catch the ball again.. Instead, the officials missed the holding call, allowing the Hurricanes to get one more chance at the ball where they drove down the field and tied it with a field goal, sending the championship game into overtime."

With about 2:15 left, Gamble gets held twice (neither are called) and catches a pass inbounds for a first down. He's ruled "out of bounds". If there was replay challenges back then, OSU get s a first down, and wins in regulation 17-14. That the game even got to OT for Miami fans to complain about the P.I. call, was a gift. I think OSU fans need to beat this drum until that CLEARLY bad call becomes a infamous as the P.I call that was actually correct.

Also, watch the OSU 3rd and 6 play in the fourth qtr with 2:30 left in the game. Gamble was held...should have been a penalty AND he caught the ball while getting a knee and hip in bounds. It was called incomplete and the Buckeyes punted on 4th down and Miami tied it up with 3 seconds to go. If the correct call is made, the Buckeyes could have ran the clock out and won in regulation. There is no guarantee of that but it would have been likely with a first down and less than 2:30 to go. Instead, the game goes into OT where this play happened...which I proved was PI...or it could have been holding. Either way, it still would be a penalty in the end zone. Tainted?...I think not. The hold happens then, before WR/CB are on camera. There are other angles that exist that CLEARLY show the infraction. Coming from a fellow cornerback. It's not PI or Holding. He jammed the receiver at the line of scrimmage(legal) you are able to do this from the line of scrimmage to 5 yards downfield. It wasn't a penalty at all jus great physical coverage.

He makes contact at the line and maintains contact into the endzone. At the very least it was Defensive holding, but because he had his hands on him with the ball in the air it was PI. If you're still sticking to your comment, ya never played the game. I played at the collegiate level. I understand the game. After 5 yards hands off buddy

      @GreenDay1981 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This call happened in overtime, dummy. This game wouldn't have gone to overtime if the refs didn't miss 4 calls that favored Cryami:
      1. Gamble's jersey being yanked on TWICE
      2. On that same play, Gamble makes a catch in bounds but the refs rule him out of bounds. If replay review existed back then, the call would have been reversed.
      3. Again on that same play, Krenzel gets shoved to the ground way after releasing the ball. No flag for roughing the passer.
      4. Missed block in the back on Cryami's long punt return that set up the tying field goal.

I'm an OU fan, but I have to give it up for Miami of 2001 and 2002.Absolutely, without a doubt, THE most talented team to ever suit up a college uniform. @MPettrozzaIsGod.Ohio State had a total of 267 yards,2.8 avg. per rush,9 penalties,6 punts, and Krenzel was7 for 21for 122 yards 0TDs and 2 INTs.Clarett had 23 rushes for 47 yards! I'm not saying Ohio State was a 'bad' team, just the 'weakest' national champion(and the luckiest)I've ever witnessed. Being lucky is truly better than being good!

Um....sorry but I attended the game. It was an obvious penalty and it occurred at the line of scrimmage. It is from the opposite camera angle, as the television camera is behind the line of scrimmage and not in front of it when it occurred. Everyone at home on their couch who doesn't like Ohio State always thinks they know it didn't happen, when they are actually full of crap. I watched it happen and so did everyone there telling the truth. You can't still be jamming a receiver while the ball is in the air. And, he didn't just jam him. He held him (you can see him start to reach up into Gamble in nothing resembling a pushing or jamming motion but a grabbing one). And, he doesn't let loose until Gamble pulls away himself and makes his way to the endzone. Even if the ref had determined it was defensive holding (and not just a jam) instead of pass interference, it still would have resulted in a first down for Ohio State. The camera does not show when the ball was thrown. By the way, when Ohio State was driving to put the game away, Miami also grabbed and pulled a fistful of jersey clearly on camera on third down play and it was not called. They then got the ball back and sent it to overtime. The game should have never gone to overtime. They were holding Ohio State receivers all night. You can see at least one more example of this on camera if you watch the game in its entirety. So, all the Ohio State haters need to STFU.

All that you need to do here is to be realistic, meaning that there are many Ohio State fans that will make negative remarks about this comment(s). Also be realistic about the fact that whether you're a Miami or Ohio State fan you know for a fact that this pass interference should never have been called on such a decisive point in a game! That is just logical for Buckeye and Canes fans. In fact, that is well understood and accepted by any football fan that understands this sport. Both players here had a clear and perfect chance to go after this ball. The Buckeye receiver obviously beat the Miami defender and he just simply dropped a catchable ball leaving the authority the tough task of deciding the outcome to the biggest game of that season. Again, these folks (the referees) shouldn't have the right to decide it unless it would have been a close or certain call to make. By the way I'm a Seminole fan, that shows you that even though I was happy that the Canes lost I fully understand that they were robbed in a huge way! All of the Miami Hurricanes football program's scandal(s) never felt right and were never accepted by most throughout the country. That is mainly what led to this bad call along with other crucial calls against this program, and there could very well be more underway for this team. So get ready Hurricane fans, because they will always hold a grudge against you! Envy will always take part of human activities! Yes even in sports! The U will eventually bounce back some day but my Noles have the chance to shine now!

Fine. Lets just agree Ohio State should have won in regulation, 17-14. There was alot less controversial BS that allowed the game to go to overtime. Roscoe Parrish got that nifty punt return due to an illegal block in the back, for example. Ohio State had to punt in the first place due to another blown call on the previous play.

Just because Miami was heavily favored doesn't mean it shouldn't have been close. We see in college football all the time, teams rising up to make it a game. Ohio State is a big school and was a Conference Champ, not some lightweight. Fact is, the ref didn't consider that the contact made was legal within 5 yds. It's very similar to the No Call in SB XLVII where Crabtree of SF was jamed close to the endzone by the Baltimoe DB. It wasn't a penalty but everyone who isn't use to seeing the 5 yd chuck zone being used that close to the endzone thought it was.
