It's a bit rich for Tharman and his supporters to go around and say that he's a unifying figure in the upcoming Presidential Elections. His immense popularity comes from a mythos that has been created over the decades of him being a more moderate person in the PAP.

So when TKL says he needs "the support of Dr Tan and TJS" to accomplish his role as President, he cannot be independent because he is dependent on them to do his job.
