I do remember the days of steam, but not how great steam locomotives are. I was only 8 years old at the time and didn't understand that they would dissappear, thank goodness for railway preservation societys up and down the country. A fantastic opportunity to relive the romance of steam, a great day out.
Very nice stuff, you start to smell that steam/coal mix even after 50+ years. I was a cameraman for years and have noticed how, so many people have avoided a nice smooth pan shot in so many videos - then at 19/20 mins in ! thank you :-)
A highly polished production, Alan. Brilliant introductory scenes, quality footage throughout and very polished editing. It's very easy to see why this thoroughly enjoyable video is so popular. Now off to watch the 35006 companion video! Kind regards, Bob

The Bullied Pacifics have always been a favourite of mine. I had a clockwork tinplate 0-Gauge version as a young kid and was later enthralled when I first saw a real one up close - at Bath Spa Station of all places. I guess it must have been during the locomotive exchanges - was that 1957? In later years, of course, I saw them regularly on the SDJR - usually double heading the Pines Express. Great days. Thank you for that Allison. You've really got me digging into my mathematical memory bank there but I have come up with the following calculations which seem reasonable. From the time that the leading edge of the front coach and the time that the leading edge of the thirteenth coach passes the same point is approximately 9 seconds. Assuming that all coaches are Mk2 at 64'-6" this equals a length of 774' ie 12 coach lengths. Therefore 774' x 3600 over 9 x 5280= 58.6mph. For the second shot the time taken is 7.5 seconds therefore the speed is 70mph. I know that these are not precise figures as some of the coaches may be Mk1's which are a foot shorter and even slowing the video to .25 speed the angle of the shot cannot give a precise point (Time is taken from the video counter) but we are fairly close. It doesn't have to be precise,so,a mph either side of your estimates is more than acceptable. Great compilation,let me say. It has everything,even a tiny slip at the beginning,the fall,and,rise of the signal arm,the footplate views.{brilliant} Super scenery shots as well. It's got the lot. Great video of Bullied locomotives in action, it always seems a shame to me that they are not pulling a train of green livery coaches, as that is how I remember them. Maroon livery BR coaches always looked so dirty even when new, and as for blood and custard coloured coaches, yuck! No wonder BR reprinted them maroon.
Thank you for your appreciation Annette. I agree regarding green coaches as I also remember them that way on the Southern although I don't agree re blood and custard as that was the colour of my boyhood on the West Coast Mainline. I hope that one day we'll have a green rake on the SVR. Alan

When watching TH-cam videos, with my fifty plus year old Ian Allan combined edition, am I allowed to underline these great engines in red?
The Bulleid pacifics were fine engines but they only had a short life as rebuilt engines ,I wonder if they ever recovered the cost of rebuilding .

At 13.40,there is practically nothing coming out of the chimney....and minimal smoke on some of the other clips...? How come....efficient burning??
In that shot she is coasting down a 1 in 100 bank However, it still requires good work by the fireman to keep the smoke to a minimum.
