SAWMILL ASSEMBLY - Swingblade Sawmill BUILD Ep.11

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 26 ก.ย. 2024
- Building a circular sawmill from scratch. The function of the mill is in its name "swingblade" - the blade swings 90 degrees making it possible to cut both ways while moving the carriage up and down the log resulting in dimensional lumber in one pass. I built a chainsaw mill ten years ago and milled lumber that I used for my cabin / sauna house project. Then I built a bandsaw mill five years ago and used the cut lumber to build a partition in my barn I currently call my workshop. Both of them worked great, bandsaw mill was faster than chainsaw mill for sure. But I think I can make an even faster mill and swingblade sawmill in my opinion is just what I'm looking for. There are different types of swingblade sawmills, one type utilizes a railway system where the saw carriage rides on rails so both rails are in the way when loading the logs. This is a beam-type mill where the saw carriage is suspended on a beam over the log that sits on the ground fixed by a couple of wedges so it doesn't roll off while cutting. There is no need to clamp the log down. Cut depth and width adjustments are all made on the sawmill beam end frames. I think this design is ingenious!
This sawmill build is based on www.turbosawmill.com "Manual Mill" design and it is patent pending.

Very impressive, nice smooth action with no binding or jerking. The truss beam is light and rigid, good design and execution, the test cuts will be interesting.
The beam could've been made from heavier materials though FIY if you decide to build your own.😀
I was hoping to see this thing throwing chips! Excellent engineering and fabrication!!! Surprised to see Donn using a store bought snow blower... 😉😉😉
Hopefully throwing chips upcoming week.🤞🤞🤞
Just an idea.
Maybe use the old collapsed roof behind for a open sided shelter. And great to see the final long saw built.
Now it all makes sense to me... just pieces falling into place!
What a monster machine, can't wait to see it in action...
Thx for taking us with you through this build!
👍👍👍
Thanks for watching!🙏
Awesome build Donn DIY !! Thank you !!
Fantastic job Donn, looking forward to the testing of the saw. It will be great. Sure is a perfect winter wonderland scene around there. Stay safe and thank you for sharing all of this build, may it bring you great fortunes. Fred.
Thank you very much!🙏
Its just as well you're a crazy young man my friend, this old man is sitting in his nice warm living room enjoying a glass of red wine watching you work in the snow... 🤯
my knee aches, my knuckles ache and my fingers are numb just watching you...
I know what the news projects will be though!
A pad for the sawmill to rest on, of course created using your own rock crusher and then a roof over the sawmill created using your sawmill.
I make light of my admiration for you, and yet I do mean it with the greatest of respect because your hard work is always to better the lives of you and your family on the homestead/farm.
All the very best of regards from (a dry and only slightly cold) Scotland
I love your simple and robust solutions.
I would have used a massive drive shaft, which would be heavy as hell and had to be supported in the middle.
The alluminum tube, you used, is much lighter and could nevertheless transmitt some momentum.
Great.👍
Brilliant contrasting paint scheme Donn. Impressive design and build.
Another amazing Estonian creator
Cheers!
Hello from the Netherlands.
thanks for the video Donn.
Kind regards, Hollandduck
🙏
Awesome build! 👍😃👍
Thank you very much.💪💪
Respect, respect, respect and even more respect. Donn this is a fantastic machine build and you young Man, you are a powerhouse. Cant wait to see it working. Succes !
Thank you. Can't wait to see it working either.🤞
Turned out great Donn. Will be great to see sawdust fly once you get the electric sorted out.
That was a lot of snow for an early overnight snowfall. Hopefully it stays away from here even though we already had 75mm a few weeks ago.
Wow! You're one industrious dude.😀 Looking forward to seeing it in action. Cheers from Eastern Canada!! 🇨🇦
Let's hope it works!🤞🤣
Well it will make an impressive yard sculpture if it doesn't.😁@@DonnDIY
Very impressive sir 👍👍👍 My dad is currently working in Estonia, tallinn, shale electric power station, he says its a absolutely beautiful country, hopefully I'm going to fly over in June to meet up with him for a holiday
🙏🙏🙏
Good lord that’s a lot of snow 😮 now I see why you put so much insulation in your workshop!
And there will be more.😀
Great job, I can't wait to see it in action-glad I found your channel. As always a 👍 God bless.
*Donn's checklist:* [note to self]:
- first: my initial cut will be lumber to build an outbuilding for this sawmill 😁
- second: buy a new thermal suit for outdoor work 🌨 ❄ 😂
Cheers!🙏
You Sir Are a Very Talented young Man, You Have Great Common since Skills, all That's needed to Accomplish any Goal's God Bless and Keep up , on you Accomplishments.
Truly remarkable build. Your abilities seem to be endless. Congrats on an amazing swing blade mill. Can’t wait to see it in action.
Let's hope it actually cuts lumber as well, it remains to be seen next time.😀🤣
Interesting setup, too bad it had to snow on everything. I know how cold the hands get working in such cold weather with metal and nuts and bolts. I applaud your initiative getting it all setup in such conditions...
Much obliged.🙏 Dry snow is okay.
Man I can't wait to see this in action...
Fabuloso el aserradero , es perando los cortes . Tenga cuidado no sen enfrie usted , un saludo des Carcaixent ,Valencia , España ..💪💪💪👍👍👍
Always epic.
And snow?
Perfect.
👍
Nor sleet or rain or dark of night stops Don from complete his task. Awesome job as always.
I cant wait for it to start snowing where I live in Canada! Ice fishing season is here!!!
Nice job now you need to build a shed to keep the sawmill dry from the snow keep up the good work.
Yup, sawmill shed would be awesome.👍
Great job,thanks ☘️🇮🇪
Thanks for watching!🙏🙏
Having seen an old mixer with an control wheel for emptying, it seems like a good idea to use the same type of wheel to control the saw. I don't know if someone hasn't already mentioned it, or if you haven't had this idea in your head for a long time. I admire and cheer!
I had the idea myself at some point but the mill moves pretty easily. I'll add needed features to it when needed.👍
Looking forward to the inaugural log being milled.
Вот это МЕГАПРОЕКТ отлично все получилось приятно смотреть!!!
That’s already galactic what you can do. Respect. 👍👍👍👍👍 The machine value you create there deserves a simple concrete slab and a rustic-looking roof, to preserve! 🤷♂️ I know you never really get ready. 🤷♂️😂 And thank you very much 🙏 for your videos!
I am planning on building a sawmill shed.👍😀
@@DonnDIY...It would be a real shame about the lot of work, the planning and endless hours in the workshop! Even if it’s fun 🤩 and you 💁♂️ see what you have created 💁♂️!
So many parts, so little room for error. I am truly impressed with your skills. Good job.
Awesome job, as always. Can’t wait to see what you build next!
I'll test the mill first.👍 Then on to new projects.🙏
Complimenti per il lavoro, sei molto bravo
Awesome build. Absolute perfection as always!
Thank you!
👌👍awesome job! Thanks for sharing!
Awesome video man and excellent job with that build. I can't wait to see it in action.
You may need to add cables for support in the other direction. You can see the beam dip down when you move the gantry across.
You are right. In my humble opinion they are mounted upside down.
Yes, the cables are in compression in their current configuration. They need to be flipped 180 degrees so they are in tension as the truss flexes downward. Or just flip the whole truss if possible. source: am architect and I have designed several similar structures.
@@wilsonmetry I was wondering if maybe he was using the cables to correct a arch from manufacturing. hes not a dumb guy and wouldnt do that if there wasnt a reason.
@@curtism7203 agree, he is not a dumb guy for sure. I couldn't see a reason they would be as he has them. Maybe he'll clear it up for us! :)
As you can see, if you look carefully, his beam is slightly arched upwards, so that compensation of deformation is probably too much in his case. So he certainly would have wanted to correct it by cabling it in the opposite direction...
I am really, really pleased to find something in this video that I can do as well as Donn! You can see it at around 5:18. That is, forgetting to make sure the impact or drill is turning in the right direction before using! 🤣 A rare mistake for Donn. A typical occurrence for me!
🤣
Sweet nice paint job💪
Thank you.👍
It's been a long journey the sawmill looks amazing, and it's done in time for the holidays so you can enjoy your family. Thanks for bringing us along the way.
Thanks for sticking around and watching this series! I'll give my best to test the mill in the upcoming week and make a video about it.🤞👍
Интересно, когда будет первый пропил бревна. А так всё продумано и сделано классно, ты большой молодец!
Wonderful aerobic exercise program you have there. Always lifting at the edge of your capabilities. Irrigation pipe is wonderful stuff, until you drive a tractor or harvester over it and turn it into scrap. Although.... you'd probably find a way to get the kinks out and put it back in service!
Very impressive build! Congratulations!
It's a shame that all of that snow got in the way, but excellent saw mill Bro. 👊😁
Cheers!
Your workmanship is awesome, thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much!
Excellent fabrication 👍👍👍
Thank you.👍
Nice work Donn! Amazing job you did on this mill, looks like a perfect manufactured kit. The time and effort it takes to think this entire kit out and then to build it is incredible, then throw in all the camera work and edit is an entirely different job. Thanks for the hard work and bringing us along. Now if that snow would go away so you can start making sawdust!
Thanks, Mike! I'll try and make sawdust this week if everything goes as planned.🤞 Small things to do still like wiring and getting a log from the forest. But if the weather allows let's hope for some action.🙏😛 Yup, making videos really gets in the way of the actual work as you perfectly know. Could achieve everything 2x faster if there wasn't for filming.🤓
Fantastic construction.
Can’t wait to hear it spin up and see the dynamics. 👍😁
Same here.😀
That's quite the machine you've built! Look forward to seeing it in action. A fine job sir!
Thank you. I hope to see it in action too.👍
Wow fantastic to see the saw together. It looks just a little nicer than the old bandsaw mill. Honestly it looks factory built. Nice job!
Thanks. The bandsaw would've looked nice too if painted.😛🤣😀
Excelente trabajo, más encima con la nieve y el frío, haces un esfuerzo para montar la maquina y deleitarnos con este video, ahora ha esperar para ver funcionar tu maquina, un abrazo
🙏🙏
Yeah. Congrats, waiting for the first log 💪 Winter came early this year, and 30cm of snow basically overnight. I don't know what everybody else is thinking but you have the new log crane on your timber trailer. I hope to see that logging video as well in this winter wonderland, hauling logs for this new mill. Cheers mate!
I'm definitely using the timber trailer for log moving for the sawmill. Have to get to the woods as well to get some logs first.😀 So it's coming.👍
Exciting! looking forward to the first cut:) Liking the truss design with the rebar.
Cheers!
Looking good 👍 and looking forward to checking it out in action. Speaking of snow, we got our 2nd on thanksgiving day. It was a surprise cause I didn’t check the weather forecast.
Thanks!
Wow that came out really great!
Thank you very much!👍
Another top job project in the bag, well done looks great. Meaty build big blade be safe.
Как всегда охрененно круто!!! 😇👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍
🙏
Very good.
Looking forward to seeing this saw working.
Congratulations.
Looking forward to it too.👍
Great project. When you start testing if there is too much deflection in the truss as the motor and blade carriage roll across while cutting consider spot welding a full skin of thin sheet metal to each side of your truss beam, like a unibody frame. You will figure it out.
Cheers, that's a great idea.👍
I'm too old for that ! You make me dreaming ...
Looks great! I think this kind of saw is good for making quarter-sawn lumber.
Awesome, thank you for sharing, always a pleasure watch your project, I learn a lot 👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching.
Amazing, I love how you just went and invented your own mechanisms for mechanical motion control (OK, probably with some inspiration 😊). Excellent execution! Looking forward to this mill cutting wood!
It's based on Turbosawmill design. They are the geniuses behind the used solutions.👍😀
❤ Nicely Donn 👍👏👏👏 longing for Summer and + Celsius ❄️
Thank you! Yup, wouldn't hurt to have warmer weather.😀
Great job as always. I have come to expect nothing less from your skill level. I would like to see this down with a gas, deiseal engine.
With an internal combustion engine there's a need for a 90 degree gear box.
Complimenti come sempre per il tuo lavoro😊..io da te prendo sempre utili spunti hai una grande manualità e tanta fantasia...un saluto dalle Dolomiti Italiane..
Wicked. Grand machine
Thanks!
My respect to you. Excellent work Donn, the machine turned out to be interesting and well thought out, it remains to see how it will show itself in work. It's a pity winter is coming, the snow has fallen, it probably won't be possible to work on a new machine this year. It's okay, I'll wait for the continuation. All the best to you.
Thanks!🙏
Simply the best 👏👏👏👏👍👍
Thanks man!🙏
Very nice job well done. I enjoy every minute of your videos. I like a lot the details of your job.
Much obliged!🙏👍
All the manufacturers of these saw mills should be watching your videos because you design better products than they do you should mass produce that you probably make a lot of money.
My sawmill is based on Turbosawmill design and they are mass producing this sawmill. And I hope they make a lot of money with this product because it's ingenious.👍
You could use the first offcuts to build a shed to store the sawmill inside, out of the weather. Great build!
That's the plan! 🤘
This is amazing....such creativity and design and not to mention a lot of work !! It operates so smooth and I bet It will cut just as smooth ! Very nice work cant wait for the next video !! 👍👍
Let's hope it cuts as well as it looks. 🤞😀
OH man that was like dragging your fingernails down a chalkboard when you drug out your support pipeyou got this build pretty neat too and in timeto.
It was, I reduced the volume on this clip though. Otherwise it would've been more horrendeous.😛😀
Great work! You should build a band saw carriage too.
If anything I will most likely add a chainsaw slabber carriage maybe... Bandsaw sounds great though...🤔
Nice can’t wait to see what it can do very inpressive😊
Can't wait either.👍
Yea
Wow! Take care & stay safe.
Will do!
Estonian engineering at its finest!
I'm flattered but unfortunately for me the design of the mill is from New-Zealand Turbosawmill👍😛
@@DonnDIY Don't be so modest Donn, there's plenty of other projects and details where your ingenuity shines!
i like prior watching because i know very interesting content
Thank you.🙏
Very good job
Awesome Donny 👌🏻 👏
Cheers!🙏👍
Why can't it always be summer, warm, dry and cozy. -22 celsius today and 20cm snow. Best Regards Tuomo Finland
😀
Well done, I like it. I hope though the saw carrier assembly doesnt jump off the rails if it hits something hard in a piece of wood. I know it has bearings on the back, top, front etc, but if it hit something hard in a log and it jumped, could the whole assembly potentially come off - with a spinning blade, that could be quite dangerous. Likely never happen, but its what came to mind when I saw you put the carrier on the rail. Maybe just need a safety/jockey wheel to stop that ever being a possibility? Well done, this is awesome.
The weight of the carriage is substantial - at least around 50kg (100lbs) or more. The possibility of the carriage falling off is miniscule but indeed, never zero. If the blade hits something in the log it'll just bust the teeth and the blade will not cut anymore. And aince I move the carriage by hand I will definitely feel it and immediately stop moving the carriage.👍
@@DonnDIY Yes, all good. Just something that came to mind. It would be horrible to have this blade running at 2500RPM or whatever it is, and it somehow launched off the rail due to hitting something inside the wood which is unseen (metal stake or something). You know this machine better than anyone though. Carry on :) Thanks Donn
Personally i love ur ATV with renault engine and other car parts. Cover this sawmill for winter time somehow. Greetings.
Thank you.🙏
looking good 👌👍
Thanks man! Let's hope it actually works as well.🤞🤞🤞🤣
Guys, like you, are the reason I have bags, under my eyes, from lack of sleep. I'm wondering where I can obtain plans for your mill... I'd like to build one next week... Have you kept track of the time involved in building your magnificent machine? Looking forward to seeing it in action. All the best from Montana.
🤣 I haven't made any plans for it. Just built it on-the-go.🤷♂️ I have kept track of time involved the build but have to check it.
Nice job Donn, just need a log
Cheers from Aus
Yup, getting a log in this snow will be interesting though.😛
Soon 1M subrscibers... --U--
Good-job. Congratulations.
Thank you.🙏
Can’t you get the local seamstress to sew up your jacket, either that or glue it up with cloth glue. Love your films of life over there, regards from England .
Apparently not.🤷♂️😀
2:50 soft expanding ear plugs are great for keeping paint out of threads when spray painting, unless the "free thread-lock" effect is desired 😊
Sweet as a nut ! Superbly built!😊
🙏🙏🙏
Ce serait bien si nous avions quelques sous-titres traduits. Toujours est il je suis fan de vos vidéos depuis longtemps vous êtes un vrai génie. 👍👏👏👏👍🇫🇷❤️
I try and not speak / write too much so many nations can watch the videos equally.👍
Very nice good work 💪👍
Thanks! 🙏
Yay finally a new vid of this lets see it cut now!!!
Yup, I try and get a tree from the woods to turn into lumber. Hopefully I'm able to make it happen A.S.A.P.🤞👍🙏
Looks great, amazing job. How about building a huge tent/shed for all your great equipment?
Yup, this sawmill is part of the sawmill shed build. How else I would get the needed lumber...😛😀
Good job👍
Thank you very much!
Its a thing of beauty Donn, really really nice result ! = ) Any idea how much deflection you are getting on the beam ? All best.
Haven't measured, I'll just run the mill and see how curved boards I'll get.😛😀
Nest build UTV mounted snow blower!
Well it goes up and down and side to side pretty good, but will it cut accurate or accurate-ish. One down side to this type of mill is, no board wider then 12" and every 4 cuts is a board in sawdust, you just have make that up speed, no pressure but the whole world will be watching.......
