    Very informative. Thank you. I especially appreciate the aggressive EQ adjustments as there's often a tendency to be shy with them. But since the EQ is solely dedicated to this reverb only, it makes the process quicker and much more effective.

    quick note -- I noticed that you did not set the reverb to 100% wet on the aux/send, and while I understand this was a quick video tutorial and maybe you were just rushing through some things, it would be most helpful for people learning to mix to mention this: allowing some of the original signal to flow through a reverb on an aux/send will actually cause comb-filtering in different places depending on the type of reverb, etc. Definitely make sure your aux reverb is 100% wet so that you don't end up with a phasing issue or a comb-filtered thin sounding moment (or 100 moments) during a mix, and then spend time trying to chase down why that's happening.

    • @justinf5422
      @justinf5422 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      slamcrank I noticed he was changing the level of the return, rather than using the send to control the reverb... Lots of etiquette issues in this vid.

      I'd like to ad dsomething i do sometimes. lowering or high passing the lows in the sides in M/S mode on the EQ, but be careful that it oesn't have a negative effect on the sound when the mix is summed to mono.

    • @justinf5422
      @justinf5422 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jerry Hollis I routinely filter everything outside of 500 and 2.5k-4k ish. Reverb Will muddy up your low end, which is why you don't use it on bass and kick. So filter it out. Too much highs will make everything sound washy and harsh. Filter it. Unless it's a really sparse mix, and the reverb is being used to fill in space almost as an instrument itself, you really don't need the extra information and it honestly just gets in the way.

    Great video, one question I have is since you didn't eq or compress the vocal, are you going to have to adjust the reverb levels after performing those step? Since I'm guessing you would want the verses to sit a little more on top of the mix? Thoughts (you may disagree)?

    If you’re mixing tracks for an EP, is it good to use similar mixing and effects to each song for conformity throughout, or is it ok to take each song individually?

    • @masteringcom
      @masteringcom  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally your choice! Sometimes a lot/all of the songs have similar instrumentations and sounds so you can mix them all the same way. Other times, each song might use totally different instruments and sounds so you may approach that with a different mindset. Hope that helps!

    Plate vocals were used in the old days.. for big ballads.. like Tony Bennett type guys, or jazz singers.. better than a digital verb. For Budy Holly in New Mexico in the 1950s - they used an oil drum at night when it was quiet for a reverb tank

  • @brianbatie6650
    @brianbatie6650 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your technique is good advice, but I am curious about something. I am listening through some cheap, no-name, not very good speakers, but even I noticed the plate long before you apparently did. I also noticed your "shimmer" was quite loud, lending too much short sibilance, which brought the "S"-es and "T"s to the front, while the vowels were still rather far back in the mix, almost buried beneath the instruments. The result in the end sounded quite unnatural, and over-processed. I might suggest that you frequently solo the vox while shaping the plate, listen to the result, then check it in the overall mix?

      Don't even bother using a delay (outside of as an effect) if you're not feeding it back into your main verb. It sticks out like a sore thumb. Also, the point is to make everything sound coherent as if it were in the same space. Would a delay happen outside of where the band is playing? Obviously not, so always send your delays to the main verb. (When not being,used as a blatant effect, and sometimes even when it is.
