James I am a computer guy in Australia, not sure why I love watching these videos, might be the puzzling nature of the problem and how Shawn and team seem to solve what a lot of other people don't seem to do very well. Water control seems obvious after someone has done it but at the beginning when you have to project a solution it can be deceptively hard it seems to me. Glad you got a good outcome, got the right man and team for the job.
As a retired landscape business owner, might I recommend on your next concrete apron, using some concrete dye (brown in this case) and a cobblestone stamp. It's just a little detail, but really makes the work stand out - especially in front of a home like this! I've also done concrete dye and stamping that looks like barnwood flooring for a poured patio that's amazing! Great work! Enjoyed your video!
@CHOPSWELL I think most people get the brushed texture because it adds more shoe grip so its the safest standard in my opinion. I love stamped concrete but on walls or if I was building a pool Id do rocky texture for the surrounding areas

First of all, you removed the dirty grungy culvert, with a well deserved culvert pipe. Secondly, you made two, aesthetic openings to the pipe, leveling the ground with a smooth, leveled crown on top. And thirdly, you contoured the creek below, by also adding resistance to the downward flow. Indecently, it was big of you to repair and improve the groundwork near the media-post where the dump truck unloaded. One of the best video's I have seen in a while where you were able to show large scale redirection of water from point "A", to point "B!" Excellent Job GCF!

Glad to see you taking the drone issue seriously. I'm a helicopter pilot in Salisbury. Drones can and will be a huge problem for helicopters since we often occupy the same airspace. Many people flying drones have no awareness of their responsibility.
For sure! I plan to talk about the drone stuff in my "talking about cameras" video. I rarely fly above the trees for these jobs because I don't want to interfere with any other aircraft. I actually delayed getting a drone for a couple years thinking it was too complex for me and regret not getting my license sooner because the footage is so cool.
If no one's mentioned it I appreciate that new 360 camera you're using it helps show the work you are referring to and the transition between you and what you were talking about is very smooth and doesn't disrupt the flow

The neighbor was upset because it had happened once before. I talked to him (instead of trying to brush him off or avoid him) and let him know that we would help the tech with whatever he needed to get things repaired faster.
A mandatory 811 call would have eliminated the cable cutting. That is 100% on you. However, the trucking company should accept the responsibility of damaging the terminal and the resulting temporary line to begin with. Additionally, I believe that undercutting that poplar tree to the right of the discharge will eventually lead to its collapse as time erodes the little remaining dirt under it. The disfigured culvert on the discharge end could be a future problem as well. You 100% improved the aesthetics of that property and solved the erosion problem in that area. Overall, a good job and very informative and thought out video!
I think its the cat tv guys that scratched it in, in the first place. Although it was marked out it was not at the proper depth. You are the Cat's Meow! :) That's why you use fast setting concrete. I really like how you laid the concrete pad to stop head cutting erosion to the inlet. Burying that creek was the best idea and the ground will llok a lawn and forrest. some trees were ready to die :( as they were at the edge. Hence the chain saws! Great job with resuing the rock and making it looks real good the rain will clean it up. All those rocks would be a fortune to buy good move! Nice vdeo.
I like the job you and Ronald did. When I see these deep gullies that are full of leaves, sticks and other crap right next to a beautiful lawn and house, I just shake my head. When they are first put it they do look good. After a few seasons of the crap in them, not so much. They are a lot of maintenance.

Looks great and glad the home owners are happy with the result. I have to say that I do think the riprap looked more natural and in keeping with the lay of the land but of course the owners preference is what matters.
Hello Shaun! I work for an ISP and I can say this: The Dump Truck is the first guy who messed up here. Running a Temp line is our SOP when it comes to dropping a new line (Suddenlink here) - It's hard to schedule construction crews to run the proper conduit / shielding - sometimes up to 2 months if we're backed up on scheduling / outages. We typically are faster in the Spring/Fall, but Summer/Winter sees more extreme weather and slows us down. That being said: The Temp line should have been clearly marked - and if it was not then that's on AT&T for not marking it.
@@GCFD np! I wish most construction guys were as dilligent as you guys in avoiding hitting conduits and being aware of what is under them. Half my job is calling in fiber or line breaks from crews who can't be bothered.
Excellent work! Since you asked about the low voltage wire, I'll give my opinion now. It is your job site so you should be telling the dump truck driver where to dump. The driver should not have dumped on a low voltage pedestal. I don't believe the next part happened but even if you were asking him to dump there he should not have so really you're both wrong in that situation. As far as whose fault it is the low voltage wire broke that's the company who installed wire. They did not put it down in the ground far enough and if they are running temporary wire without burying it, it has to be very clearly marked. There is industry standard for how deep low voltage wire should be buried. Therefore you should not be held liable for repair of wire if it was not buried deep enough. Good video!
what a great Job you and Ronald done, you sure made improvments to that property. The one thing I like todo with the "Concreate inlets" is when the concrete is still moveable/soft I put/press some small "river pebbles" into the concrete, once the concrete get's hard the river pebbles can't move, you can power wash them if they ever get dirty etc..
Sir I like the way you are doing business as a contractor if you keep doing business that way you will have nothing but good blessings from all of that and I think you're a good contractor if I could give you 10 stars I would give you two you for that so keep treating customers the way you would like to be treated as a homeowner a good luck with your business

Super impressed with the work ethic by Ronald on every job. The rock work around the culvert is so pretty. I started watching and didnt think the drainage ditch was bad until you finished, and wow does it look and function like a dream. I bet that is such a pleasure to mow now that all that riprap is covered. If I lived closer I would only have two questions: when can you start; also, is Ronald going to be on the job too?

another great job! thank you for the explanation about why you went to a culvert, it made sense. the only thing i would add would be to embed rocks into the concrete as a visual transition.

As a comms guy (I deal with plant maintenance, not single drops to houses) if a contractor hits a cable and tells me where they hit it, even helps dig it out, I don't even fill out the damage claim paperwork. I've had them hit a cable and before I got there expose 2 feet of cable on either side and shore up a trench for me to work in. On the flip side, I've had contractors cut a cable, place their shoring against it to hide it then play stupid when I showed up. The people responding to those calls don't care whose fault it was in the moment, we just want to fix it. Our performance metrics include how long an outage lasts so that's the 1st thing on our mind.
Neat job, and you got to use three different machines for it. I can remember when, I think that you didn't have any machines and you got that one you stand on at the back. I may be incorrect on that but you're getting lots of interesting projects. Thanks for bringing us along ... Cheers to you ....

Gate City Foundation Drainage - you asked whose fault was the broken internet line. I retired after 37 years with AT&T, most of that time was at a computer center help desk. Every phone, cable, and internet line I've ever seen buried by an installer was put barely under the soil. Some were actually on top of the soil. No, that wasn't a temporary fix, it's what they do. To get the line at the proper depth, the customer usually has to dig the ditch then request that the company put the line in the customer's ditch. I know that's not the right way but it's the way things are almost always done.
That Ronald is a super good employee, you need to take care of him. Teach him to operate that equipment for instance and good pay. The reason the exit side of that culvert is deformed is because you put all those big rocks on it without supporting it with some good clay all around it. Phone companies are notorious for leaving their lines lay on top the ground and not coming back to bury them for months, sometimes years, they did it on two of my properties.
I appreciate that you didn't lower your standards. I had the same issue, the school told me I had to pass everyone. I didn't, needless to say I didn't work there very long.
Awesome video and another job well done! The line should have been buried but as you know the service providers are only worried about the bottom line.
This job had many pieces and area's that came into play for sure regarding the continual water flow from three or four different sources YIKES. Just a thought here the cable company in my opinion should have done a couple of things differently for sure laying their unprotected cable and going over/through the culvert area...duh. Overall Gate City did an outstanding job plus had GREAT VISION as to the flow of the LAND AND THE WATER plus redoing the banks and corner for a smoother flow. GOOD JOB GUY'S!!! That's the difference between your Company and whoever originally installed the old system versus the PRO'S. God Bless you all.
I agree that you did a great job of smoothing over the land and correcting the drainage. About the cables, I noticed there were location flags. This indicates that cables and utilities were supposed to have been located and marked. From experience, I can tell you that those flags or paint marks are not 100% accurate. There are several things at work in this situation. The utility location was not very accurate or thorough. The utility crew that left a cable basically on the ground surface should not have done so, they were lazy. The dump truck driver should not have dumped the dirt where he did without prior approval. You did well in trying to rectify the problem. I recently(late September 2022) lost my telephone and internet connection to a truck taking out a telephone cable above the street and then having problems getting a new internet service connected. It seems as if many of these service crews are lazy and don't care how they do their jobs.
It is definitely an odd site, Shawn, with a lot of different things going on. If the objective was to get rid of sixty feet of rock channel, I say you get an 'A'.
Lovely place the customer has. I can see why they wanted that ugly gully fixed. That turned out really nice Shawn. Ya'll do such good work. Cable companies can be lazy. After all they usually are a monopoly in a specific area. I had a temp line laying in my yard for at least 6 months. Pain in the butt mowing around the thing for all those months before they finally got around to burying a new cable. Feel real sorry of the guy that lost his internet not once, but twice. I bet he was in terror that it would get taken out a third time. 🤣

Very nice as usual Shawn,! That phone lines a tough one.. I hate when they scab temporary lines and never seem to make it back to bury them properly. I don't feel I should be concerned with utilities while scraping sod per say but unfortunately accidents happen. Invisible dog fences are a pain as well cause they are extremely shallow and never marked since its a private line. Helping open up the damaged area at least makes it seem as you are sorry for doing it and I do the same. Enjoy watching and again, nice job!

We called811 multiple times because the weather kept pushing this job back. I think the lines being buried 1/2” was a big part of the problem too.

Looks great and glad the home owners are happy with the result. I have to say that I do think the riprap looked more natural and in keeping with the lay of the land but of course the owners preference is what matters.

I work for an ISP and I can say this:
The Dump Truck is the first guy who messed up here. Running a Temp line is our SOP when it comes to dropping a new line (Suddenlink here) - It's hard to schedule construction crews to run the proper conduit / shielding - sometimes up to 2 months if we're backed up on scheduling / outages. We typically are faster in the Spring/Fall, but Summer/Winter sees more extreme weather and slows us down.
That being said: The Temp line should have been clearly marked - and if it was not then that's on AT&T for not marking it.

I wish most construction guys were as dilligent as you guys in avoiding hitting conduits and being aware of what is under them.
Half my job is calling in fiber or line breaks from crews who can't be bothered.

Since you asked about the low voltage wire, I'll give my opinion now.
It is your job site so you should be telling the dump truck driver where to dump. The driver should not have dumped on a low voltage pedestal. I don't believe the next part happened but even if you were asking him to dump there he should not have so really you're both wrong in that situation.
As far as whose fault it is the low voltage wire broke that's the company who installed wire. They did not put it down in the ground far enough and if they are running temporary wire without burying it, it has to be very clearly marked. There is industry standard for how deep low voltage wire should be buried. Therefore you should not be held liable for repair of wire if it was not buried deep enough.

what a great Job you and Ronald done, you sure made improvments to that property. The one thing I like todo with the "Concreate inlets" is when the concrete is still moveable/soft I put/press some small "river pebbles" into the concrete, once the concrete get's hard the river pebbles can't move, you can power wash them if they ever get dirty etc..

Super impressed with the work ethic by Ronald on every job. The rock work around the culvert is so pretty. I started watching and didnt think the drainage ditch was bad until you finished, and wow does it look and function like a dream. I bet that is such a pleasure to mow now that all that riprap is covered. If I lived closer I would only have two questions: when can you start; also, is Ronald going to be on the job too?

As a comms guy (I deal with plant maintenance, not single drops to houses) if a contractor hits a cable and tells me where they hit it, even helps dig it out, I don't even fill out the damage claim paperwork. I've had them hit a cable and before I got there expose 2 feet of cable on either side and shore up a trench for me to work in. On the flip side, I've had contractors cut a cable, place their shoring against it to hide it then play stupid when I showed up.
The people responding to those calls don't care whose fault it was in the moment, we just want to fix it. Our performance metrics include how long an outage lasts so that's the 1st thing on our mind.
That neighborhood must be so safe and peaceful since it's protected from random people driving or even walking by. A lot of work though. Nice job!

Gate City Foundation Drainage - you asked whose fault was the broken internet line. I retired after 37 years with AT&T, most of that time was at a computer center help desk. Every phone, cable, and internet line I've ever seen buried by an installer was put barely under the soil. Some were actually on top of the soil. No, that wasn't a temporary fix, it's what they do. To get the line at the proper depth, the customer usually has to dig the ditch then request that the company put the line in the customer's ditch. I know that's not the right way but it's the way things are almost always done.

That Ronald is a super good employee, you need to take care of him. Teach him to operate that equipment for instance and good pay. The reason the exit side of that culvert is deformed is because you put all those big rocks on it without supporting it with some good clay all around it. Phone companies are notorious for leaving their lines lay on top the ground and not coming back to bury them for months, sometimes years, they did it on two of my properties.

This job had many pieces and area's that came into play for sure regarding the continual water flow from three or four different sources YIKES. Just a thought here the cable company in my opinion should have done a couple of things differently for sure laying their unprotected cable and going over/through the culvert area...duh. Overall Gate City did an outstanding job plus had GREAT VISION as to the flow of the LAND AND THE WATER plus redoing the banks and corner for a smoother flow. GOOD JOB GUY'S!!! That's the difference between your Company and whoever originally installed the old system versus the PRO'S. God Bless you all.

Yes that's double-wall corrugated culvert pipe. It's smooth on the inside.
I agree that you did a great job of smoothing over the land and correcting the drainage. About the cables, I noticed there were location flags. This indicates that cables and utilities were supposed to have been located and marked. From experience, I can tell you that those flags or paint marks are not 100% accurate. There are several things at work in this situation. The utility location was not very accurate or thorough. The utility crew that left a cable basically on the ground surface should not have done so, they were lazy. The dump truck driver should not have dumped the dirt where he did without prior approval. You did well in trying to rectify the problem. I recently(late September 2022) lost my telephone and internet connection to a truck taking out a telephone cable above the street and then having problems getting a new internet service connected. It seems as if many of these service crews are lazy and don't care how they do their jobs.

Lovely place the customer has. I can see why they wanted that ugly gully fixed. That turned out really nice Shawn. Ya'll do such good work. Cable companies can be lazy. After all they usually are a monopoly in a specific area. I had a temp line laying in my yard for at least 6 months. Pain in the butt mowing around the thing for all those months before they finally got around to burying a new cable. Feel real sorry of the guy that lost his internet not once, but twice. I bet he was in terror that it would get taken out a third time. 🤣

Very nice as usual Shawn,! That phone lines a tough one.. I hate when they scab temporary lines and never seem to make it back to bury them properly. I don't feel I should be concerned with utilities while scraping sod per say but unfortunately accidents happen. Invisible dog fences are a pain as well cause they are extremely shallow and never marked since its a private line. Helping open up the damaged area at least makes it seem as you are sorry for doing it and I do the same. Enjoy watching and again, nice job!
