Idk why people are mad that Prospero is a woman in this version. Unlike an all-female Lord Of The Flies, this change doesn't harm the story or change its message.
But the way the character was banished in the original play is different than this movie. Director Julie Taymor writes how Antonio accused Prospera of killing their father with witchcraft. Taymor said, "She had her whole life taken away from her because she was a woman." and thus was "more overtly wronged". In the original play, Prospero was the Duke of Milan, but gave the power to his brother Antonio, so Prospero himself could tend to his studies. But Antonio handled the state of affairs so well that he wanted the title as well. It was Prospero's irresponsibility and blind eye that led to his banishment.
While I think that it is usually interesting to gender bend Shakespeare roles and it's okay in this case, it wasn't the same as them changing genders for other roles. We use Shakespeare to study the relationships between people and is much less about the story and more about the meanings behind them. Something like the Lord of the Flies is meant to be a story about boys and wouldn't make sense with girls.
Caliban is such a sad character and I feel so bad for him, he has been treated like a slave (which he is basically) and if Prospero had treated him better he would have had an amazing character development.
Only Shakespeare likely fully understands the writings he made. There is much written and discussed on him and his work. It is a very worthy subject that is worth the effort of delving in. If you like modern stories in movies\series\comics games etc. you will be greatly rewarded by studying Shakespeare. So many modern stories are inspired by his work. You could almost argue all of modern western literature and fiction is touched by the mans work in some way.
@@Absoluteabyssalfluidcharger between this and The dark lady, I'm really starting to believe he was. His last plays... At least I think where in protest to Crown and their actions.
Caliban is often used to interpret the tempest in the light of colonialism. Caliban is the true native of the isle, and I think the choice to make him black is probably a comment on the historical facts of colonialism.
I have to recite Caliban's speech for my English class...wish me luck guys :')
How’d it go having to do it in drama know lol

I love this show and the characters so much! Caliban is an amazing tortoise.
Caliban is beautiful. Shakespear's understanding of ethos of slavery is insightful
Caliban is an anagram for cannibal.

Yeah you missed the part where he tried to rape Miranda though
@@andrewcormier6675 lol true
he tried to rape miranda
he is getting treated like this because he tried to rape miranda, before the incident caliban was like a son to prospero
That's a left wing interpretation. He's also an admitted attempted rapist.
Ms. Crofts it’s me Avinash
His design is amazing

Is that Alfred Molino as Stephano? His character was based on my ancestor Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower.
What the heck was that about?
@@Absoluteabyssalfluidcharger Thanks for that
Overblown performances, looks trite. I like the visuals enough
Why is Caliban not a lizard but a black guy in makeup

Isn't prospero a male
Exactly
@@wackyshekhinahhunter1086 don't know why he is shown as a female
It's ok. There are many different versions. At least if we understand the story itself and everything that will do
In Shakespeare's time. Only males played all of the roles. It really doesnt matter to the story one bit IMO.
