imagine having that many tyrannosaur skulls just casually sitting in your office! crazy!

Yeah, I think the students sometimes take it for granted, because our lab is often the only one that they've seen. I'm truly grateful to have all these resources!

I'm jealous of your office, Prof. Whitmer.

We don't have a natural history museum near by, so I've tried to get what we need for our students to do their research projects...as well as to educate-and hopefully inspire-the general public.

I'm in the wrong career. I'm so jealous that you get to study these things up close.

I can see UCMP 118742 lurking in the backround.

Yeah, the cast that we have here (same as everyone, I think) is okay, but the original fossil is stunning!! So much more informative!

@@witmerlab Indeed those subtle features really highlights in the original fossil . I read Porter & Witmer the other week and it contained very Interesting data. And in to be able to see the three grooves emanations from an external neurovascularforamen. As i could not see these vein - artery - nerve sitting just below the foramen on the cast. The maxilla of 118742 is impressive in its own way as it is on pair some of the larger maxillas. You do have a beautiful collection Larry and the team.

Fantastic presentation. Very pertinent to understanding morphology and physiology. Many people probably think the pre-orbital cavity is the actual orbit. ~ I think…

Interesting story behind the first 2 T-Rex specimens. Both the the type specimen and the 2nd specimen (the more complete of the 2, AMNH 5027) originally belonged to the AMNH. During WW2 the type specimen was sold to the Carnegie museum for fear NYC would be the target of a bombing raid and the only specimens of T Rex would be destroyed, as was the only Spinosaurus specimen (at the time) in Berlin.

Do you think Tyrannosaur have lips or not?

Is it possible to buy a copy of that Chomper skull? I am fascinated with young trex and I'd love to have a copy of that on my bookshelf to look at. How much would something like that even cost? I've seen full sized skulls go for like $300-$600. Granted, they were probably much lower quality than what you're used to looking at. I've seen better ones for like $9000, too, which is way beyond anything I could ever afford, personally.

I'm afraid that our Chomper reconstruction still isn't available. The fossil specimen is itself still under study (by others, not us) and we agreed not to provide the model until that work is published. At that time, the 3D model will be released and freely available for download. WitmerLab is not a commercial outfit and we don't sell any materials that we have.

@@witmerlab I understand you don't sell, I was just curious if you knew of a place. Thank you, I will wait patiently. It is a very cool reconstruction! :)

Does AMNH 5027 have an official nickname?

    • @witmerlab
      @witmerlab  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The late Jack Conrad once told me that AMNH 5027 was known as "Bug" after Bug Creek, but it's not clear that many have used that name. Nicknamed dinosaurs is a really new fad.

@@witmerlab If I worked for the AMNH, I would suggest a fund-raising contest to give it a nickname. It would probably make lots of money and it is just easier to refer to the famous specimens by their nicknames. "Bug" is a great name. I do remember now that Emily used that name in one of your videos.

@@julieluckey7902 That's a great idea! My vote would be for "Barnum" after Barnum Brown, who discovered AMNH 5027 and other T. rex specimens, including the holotype!

    • @julieluckey7902

@@witmerlab Well, feel free to suggest the idea the next time you talk to anyone from that museum. I don't know anyone there so I can't suggest it.
