Lock tail for T/O and landing as you said. Also, at the start of your take off roll, hold the stick all the way back until up to about 40 mph. That puts more pressure on the tail and will help. At 40, slowly let the stick forward, using the rudder to off set the left pull. A little practice and it's quite rewarding to fly.

Apart from the scary takeoffs, it's an absolute joy to fly this plane in VR. It's incredibly well built to the point you feel like you're actually in the aircraft and the view and experience is amazing!
I especially love that I can put my head to the left or to the right and look down the side of the aircraft and it doesn't break the immersion because the cockpit's open.

Absolutely gorgeous plane. Picked it up for $15. There are STOL planes for $30 on MSFS market that should be $15, and the WYMF5 a $30, well worth the model. Love the older planes. Being a 30's plane modernized in the 80's is perfect. The details are awesome, love the wooden propeller. I wish an official fully functional Grumman Goose would come out, I've downloaded the Wookie version but had sound issues.

Tips for flying taildraggers from a real pilot (got my PPL on a taildragger). I played sims for over a decade before becoming a professional pilot, sims are great for training procedures (i.e circuits and IFR stuff) but they aren't amazing at representing how controlling the planes feel.
    1. During taxi, use differential brakes + wheel steering for sharper turns and, most importantly, keep doing continuous 'S' turns to see what is ahead of you.
    2. For the takeoff ground roll, keep the stick all the way back until about 60% of your rotate speed (that is, usually, when you should raise the tail from the ground). You`ll notice a much better controllability.
    3. Always land in a 3 point attitude, hold the aircraft above the runway until it stalls. You`ll stop faster and you can also use a bit of the brakes without causing a nose-over crash.
    4. After touchdown, just like you did for takeoff, keep holding the stick back. You`ll be able to control the aircraft during the landing roll.
A few considerations about MSFS vs Real Aircraft
    1. The control inputs are super sensitive in-game, I could not find a good configuration for any joystick/yoke.
    2. I could not get any plane into a spin during a stall (Asobo did not care about this part of the aerodynamics).
    3. Compensators are super hard to use in-game because of the sensibility issues (like other control surfaces).
    4. Engine torque tendencies are exaggerated (Same goes for ground effect)
    TL:DR
Flying real planes is easier. Conventional gear aircraft are outdated (but fun), tricycle is superior in every performance and work load aspect.
Sorry if I forgot any tips and enjoy the YMF-5!

The term barnstorming actually predates powered heavier than air flight by several decades. The earliest use seems to be used for travelling theatrical groups who in the more rural areas of the US would perform in barns. It was also used in the 19th century for politicians touring the country giving speeches as well. I'm not sure which came first but the OED's earliest quotations are for the theatrical performances (1880s vs 1890s). The term was also used for sports teams that went on tour. So the phrase was associated with travelling performers for a few decades before the aviation barnstormers came onto the scene. And while flying through barns certainly was a stunt that some barnstormers did, that stunt isn't the origin of the term.
This plane is pretty nice and the price makes it very tasty. The take-off and landing handling characteristics are a bit dubious though. Would also be nice if the tail wheel lever was animated. Top wing compass can be a pain to read as well, and heading indicator has some problems. That aside it's pretty well modelled and sounds great. I do wish it was an actual vintage plane though with 1920-30s instruments instead of this modern variant but then I'm a huge fan of the vintage interwar aviation era so that might just be me!
Carenado/Alabeo have a Beechcraft Staggerwing for the older flight sims that I hope they bring over to MSFS. Such a beautiful plane. There's a dev called Golden Age Simulations that have been making 1920s-30s planes for FS9/X/P3D for a while now and they're working on porting their Kinner Sportwing and Stearman to the new sim although from early shots the texturing looks really last gen so eh. There's the really good Tiger Moth by Ant's Airplanes for P3d which I'm hoping will get an MSFS release as well someday, it's a real joy to fly that one and looks great.
The IRIS Jabiru also has a little tablet type thing where you can adjust some settings like wheel spats, prop type and option to show a passenger or not. It's a great plane that you really should check out if you haven't already.
Anyway great video as always, cheers!

Hey Buddy. Thanks for all the info. Great knowledge! I remember my dad having a photography book with 1920's circus act aircraft images. There was an image showing a biplane exploding through a small barn. I think thats why thought that was where the name was from... but your right they did perform in barns. Interesting story behind the name. Thanks!

Flying the ASOBO Savage Cub taildragger is absolutely controllable during take-off and landing and I've never had issues with that aircraft but this Carenado does seem to be broken with the Centre of Gravity (COG), being set too far forward which could be causing the issues. The Carenado WACO is very difficult to keep straight on the runway and heaven forbid you should have a crosswind making things even worse. Yup, Carenado need to make a patch but otherwise, she's a joy to fly once up in the air and the attention to detail is stunning.

Waco is pronounced "Wah-Ko" not wacko like a crazy person nor Waco like the town in TX. Regardless, it's a great airplane in FS2020. Lock the tail wheel when lined up (shift-g), adjust pitch trim to nose up, bring the MP to 25, keep the stick/yoke fully back until about 40 mph, be ready with rudder correction, then slowly increase to full power as you relax the back pressure on the stick and she flies off at 70mph. The locked tail wheel also helps on landing.

The taildraggers, especially with big heavy motor and big heavy prop are notorious for ground loop tendency and require quite a work with the rudder. Look this vid of real one to take off:
      th-cam.com/video/pAsppZKBlG8/w-d-xo.html
There is also known sim problem with somewhat unrealistic effectiveness of surfaces. But I think it mostly due to the lack of butt accelerometer in sim. The corrections come too late too exaggerated. So, I would not blame all on model. Anyway, with some practice I can take off and land this thing in the boundaries of runway, though still waving quite a bit. :)
