Is Trauma Surgery the Worst Lifestyle Specialty?

In this video I react to the "worst lifestyle specialties". I have been a primary care doctor (Family Medicine), a general surgeon and a trauma surgeon. By some these are considered the worst lifestyle specialties. What makes a speciality a good or bad lifestyle really depends on you.
A concept I will be introducing in a few videos going forward is the issue of making a career choice based on the rewards, but not looking at the sacrifice. All work is a trade off. In many cases, "bad" lifestyles occur because the work is so meaningful that a lot of time is sacrificed for the financial reward.

Surgical tech here…..I always felt bad for med students that had to rotate into surgery and had zero intention of going into surgery. Open cases were difficult as I was having to monitor them for sterility purposes as well as do my job. Robotic and lap surgery gave them something to look at, but it was such a waste of their time. I can only think of one that ‘thought about’ switching to surgery in all these years. I know there are some that haven’t made up their minds about which field they wish to pursue (most have) but it seems allowing them to focus on their interests would bring a more optimal outcome. Just my 2 cents. 🙂

Really appreciate your different perspective! I saw this video myself and wanted to hear what physicians thought about it, since it seems like a lot of it is just regurgitating stereotypes

Rather than the quality of your work it’s the satisfaction & fulfillment of your job.
I would not forget a teacher in surgery who used to say “ my poor patients make me rich , because God pays for them “.

Informative video . Please keep informing us . Love from India . I am a student currently preparing for medical entrance exam . I can understand your words ..I think as a doctor our primary focus is on to save lifes . We should be ready to spend any time to do that . We should not go to medical life for money . We should go in it only if we are really interested in this job

Wow! The last minute was so wonderfully said, it gave me chills! Thank you for inspiring me to keep pursuing my vocation, Dr. Hilsden. My question is: How do you go from family medicine to surgery? (I ask because I’m interested in FM, ER, and general surgery, possibly trauma). You apply to a new residency after working in family medicine for a few years? I would love to know this information. I appreciate you and God bless you!

Thanks for the comment. The transition from family to trauma surgery was hard, but when you know what you want to do you do it

Primary care doc from Sweden here. That paperwork… It’s taken to such height here that it’s making me doubt my choice. Demand for documenting every single sound uttered about the patient is growing at the rate of malignant tumour.
And it’s the same in other professions in Sweden. Teachers are documenting that a student is not doing well at maths more then teaching maths.

Maybe AI could help us with the paperwork in the future

I like the new background music, nice touch. I just hope the music volume is relatively lower compared to your voice volume next time so I can hear you better.

@@RichHilsden thanks! Yeah it’s not bad but I feel like the background music volume being a bit more mellow would be nice. The voice is still audible, it’s just that it’s hard to stay focused if you’re watching the video only once or twice.

I don't think surgeons are masochist. I just look at the positive stereotypes of doctors. I was wondering how did you get from family medicine to a surgeon.

So you were a FM doc beforehand? Can you still take care of a few patients in clinic as a trauma surgeon if you wanted to? Asking as a lost M3

The background song is a bit annoying and distracting…
