I don’t know how that little girl bent back like that but it was such an intense part! The crunchy neck sound, and squishy eyeball noise, was bananas. The mom telling her that “the most important part is that they look alive” made you think, well what if she actually comes to life? And then we felt helpless when things began to unravel. So Perfect.
Edie Vann played dead Mary. She is a circus performer. Super talented and a wonderful kid. The two Mary's would play UNO between set ups and beat all the adults!

To me, the dead kid kind of teased the little girl. She has been adjusting her head cause it's been falling frontwards-downwards every time the photo is to be taken. So she sent her head up. far way back. It's like she's mocking saying "is that enough now"

Yeah, and the continuation could be that her mother slowly begins to realize that her daughter isn't the same person as she continues to grow ill, and tries to find a way to get her daughter back before she succumbs to her sickness.
This was excellent. Everything about it. The story, The acting. The casting, the set, the period, the costumes, everything was perfect. I've been watching so many of these shorts and this was by far my favorite!
I have always wondered why there wasn't any horror made about post mortem photography era. It is fascinating and disturbing at the same time. Hope this movie can be made into a feature film!
The atmospherics was to die for! Well done! The eeriness and 'not knowing what was coming next' were handled superbly by the director, cast and crew. The sound quality was also faultless.

So here is my take from the short film.... According to the law of nature one life comes into existence only when another life ceases to exist, that is how nature balances the life cycle... So the fact that a Mary died and another Mary must have come into life was natural... However keeping in mind the Christiam belief of death, a life ceases to exist only after the body is buried followed by the rituals and right after the soul has left the body... But as the young Mary's body was kept unburied for two long weeks it messed up the natural process as per the Christian ideology... And hence when the little girl who is also named 'Mary' is asked to give up her stupid phobia by her mother as they 'make a living out of death', she ends up trading her life with dead mary in an unnatural way... Because we all know that no one can make a living out of death by transgressing the law of nature... Dont know how valid that stands but yeah just felt like sharing ✌

I think it has less to do with Christian beliefs and more so the ancient practice with the gold or silver coins. I believe it started with the Greeks (I would fact check that) but essentially the coins were placed in the mouth once the person died so the deceased could pay the ferry driver to the afterlife. How I see it, when Mary placed the coin in dead Mary’s mouth, it allowed the deceased Mary to travel and “pay her toll” into the living Mary. That’s why the coin is spit up in the end. It’s seen as confirmation of possession as well as the toll being paid.

Sonia Rana - The director did say that the ending was open for interpretation in the comments so who really knows. I’m not saying your wrong just pointing out the relevance of the coins since those are a major focus of the director whereas there was no mention or visuals of Christian beliefs. No cross, no bible, no mention of God but those coins are always there. Edit: I did reach out to the director for clarification so hopefully we can get some answers.

The buzzing of flies was the tiny detail that made this film. Props all around for mood, cinematography, script, acting, editing, directing, Foley...superb.
The squishing sounds when adjusting the eyeballs, creaking of the chair, and the sound when the head drops forward creeped me out. Mr. Long, the attention to details were spot-on. This was a good one!!
Great film! Such a creepy thing to subject a child to, helping mom take pics like that. How would her body still be intact after 2 weeks though? Freezing the corpse? I can't imagine having only a picture of your child once they have passed, it's so sad.

The director and writer Joshua Long works with my dad! My dad told me about this film and thought I'd watch it because I am a bit of a horrorphile. Have to say I wasn't disappointed!
Truly wonderful! I’ve heard and seen some post mortem pictures on the internet but it’s something else that brings such a realistic portrayal of it. I definitely got the chills while watching this.

Sorry to disillusion you, but MOST of the movies on ALTER are independent shorts made by various filmmakers and submitted to ALTER to be included in thier roster of great other shorts. ALTER HAS INDEED made several films themselves, but mostly full length features(ie: Villains, which I highly recommend!) *EDIT:* WOOPS! Well, I guess I should have read the other responses first! LOL! But, you get the gist! 😉✌
I started following this channel because of the doll maker and I still want a long version of it. Anyway whoever manages to get this channel active is a genius.
This is the first horror short story that amazed me a lot! Indeed, it even supersede other hollywood horror films in which illogical or doesn't make sense seriously. Post Mortem Mary is very direct and sends the idea to the viewers the possibility of switching spirits which in reality is happening oftentimes through wicca, voodoo and simply in nightmare where you are experiencing sleep paralysis. Two thumbs up alter!!!
It's really amazing you brought this up. I even brought an altar prop to set to kind of have a hint at that aspect. But I decided to keep it more mysterious in the end.
Wow wow wow!! I extremely enjoyed this one. ALTER has many good films to offer but every now and then there's is one that really hits the right spot of your own personal taste. This is one of them and for me it's perfect from the first second to the last. ❤
It took me a second to recognise her but I'm pretty sure the actress who plays the role of the mother (the one who coughs) is Melanie Zanetti! I absolutely love her!! I've seen her on Gabriel's Inferno. Absolutely stunning and her acting is to die for! Thanks for bringing her in , Alter💙
That's 100% She's incredible. This was the first time she played a mum and now she's playing the voice of one of the most famous mum's in Australia in the animated show Bluey.
It is Melanie Zanetti! She also is the mother in Bluey! She also did a pretty fun zombie / robot apocalypse flick with Dolph Lundgren called Battle of the Damned! Also Tracks! Love and Monsters!... She is rad!
ha ha na we had a heap of the process in the script. We had the props and the entire thing. But shooting with children meant huge time restrictions. So unfortunately we could not shoot it. The feature will restore this for sure!

This is easily the most terrifying horror film I have ever seen...and I’ve seen quite a few. It doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares or a lot of gore-just pure existential dread. SPOILER ALERT: .... The bit where the girl has to open the other child’s eyes. My God. Also, the decision to make the corpse only slightly decomposed was a brilliant choice. It causes the viewer to experience “uncanny valley” anxiety. It’s dead...but it still looks human enough to make you extremely uncomfortable.
It was interesting that the possessed child had the same cough as the mother at the end of the movie. I wonder if an actual transfer did take place. And some believe pictures can capture or steal souls.
@@crystalDM96 The dead Mary was actually killed by her family’s horse. whether it was because she was riding it or she got to close and it kicked her is unknown. We know it was a horse that killed her as her father said “that horse killed my baby”

I do know the mother who was taking the picture is sick. If I would have to guess, she would probably be suffering from Tuberculosis.
Uncertainty is the best part in a horror movie and this one was brilliant. Wish it had a longer duration. The choice of theme is great, it made the whole thing more spooky 👍🏻 Loooooooved it

This was so good and soooooo creepy. The dead Mary’s smiling face reminded me of The Exorcist (the one movie that to this day still gives me nightmares). So much for sleep! I have been seriously Altered!! (I love it!)
Damn I was partly covering the screen in preparation for the "camera swinging then poof the ghost appears" scene. This is the creepiest short I've seen in a long time, the movie perfectly channeled the feeling of a scared kid. Brrrrr, gives me the chills.

They touch on it a little in the movie "The Others", but it's not "about" it. It's a creepy party of the movie though.

The director and writer Joshua Long works with my dad! My dad told me about this film and thought I'd watch it because I am a bit of a horrorphile. Have to say I wasn't disappointed!

Truly wonderful! I’ve heard and seen some post mortem pictures on the internet but it’s something else that brings such a realistic portrayal of it. I definitely got the chills while watching this.

Sorry to disillusion you, but MOST of the movies on ALTER are independent shorts made by various filmmakers and submitted to ALTER to be included in thier roster of great other shorts. ALTER HAS INDEED made several films themselves, but mostly full length features(ie: Villains, which I highly recommend!)

This is the first horror short story that amazed me a lot! Indeed, it even supersede other hollywood horror films in which illogical or doesn't make sense seriously. Post Mortem Mary is very direct and sends the idea to the viewers the possibility of switching spirits which in reality is happening oftentimes through wicca, voodoo and simply in nightmare where you are experiencing sleep paralysis. Two thumbs up alter!!!
It's really amazing you brought this up. I even brought an altar prop to set to kind of have a hint at that aspect. But I decided to keep it more mysterious in the end.

my take is that she embraced the death of the other Mary as her own and how this girl too is dead emotionally feeling nothing but a living dead.
Very well done! I appreciate subtle horror like this where it leaves the viewer to fill in the blanks. It's so much more effective that way.

It took me a second to recognise her but I'm pretty sure the actress who plays the role of the mother (the one who coughs) is Melanie Zanetti! I absolutely love her!! I've seen her on Gabriel's Inferno. Absolutely stunning and her acting is to die for! Thanks for bringing her in , Alter💙
That's 100% She's incredible. This was the first time she played a mum and now she's playing the voice of one of the most famous mum's in Australia in the animated show Bluey.
It is Melanie Zanetti! She also is the mother in Bluey! She also did a pretty fun zombie / robot apocalypse flick with Dolph Lundgren called Battle of the Damned! Also Tracks! Love and Monsters!... She is rad!

Even with vintage camera they had a instant printing mechanism that too in client location. Wow.
ha ha na we had a heap of the process in the script. We had the props and the entire thing. But shooting with children meant huge time restrictions. So unfortunately we could not shoot it. The feature will restore this for sure!

This was more intense than full length feature film. Very good.
My Great Grandmother used to sit with the dead at her house.People would come to see their loved ones all hours of the day and night.
The short was inspired by my grandmother Mary who was trained at the age of eight to lay out the bodies in the north east of England.
GREAT film! Even creepier is the fact this was an actual practice in the late 1800s and 1900s.
Okay,these young ladies did an excellent job. But also that's messed up,that'swhat she gets for doing what her Momma told her.,body swapped with a ghost? Poor baby🙊😣

She shoulda got the shot right the first time. If she'd done better the first time they would have been gone and the family would have had to deal with her.

@@milcycat7285 this one was a screen Queensland funded film. So all the actors were Brisbane based. The producer and myself went and searched for them. The film we did after this had a casting agent.

This is easily the most terrifying horror film I have ever seen...and I’ve seen quite a few.
It doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares or a lot of gore-just pure existential dread.
SPOILER ALERT:
....
The bit where the girl has to open the other child’s eyes. My God.
Also, the decision to make the corpse only slightly decomposed was a brilliant choice.
It causes the viewer to experience “uncanny valley” anxiety.
It’s dead...but it still looks human enough to make you extremely uncomfortable.
Now that had a sinister feel throughout, loved it!!
As a HUGE horror film fan, this is my fave short horror film as of yet !!

It was interesting that the possessed child had the same cough as the mother at the end of the movie. I wonder if an actual transfer did take place. And some believe pictures can capture or steal souls.
I think the town was experiencing some kind of a plague. That's what killed the dead Mary i think
@@crystalDM96 The dead Mary was actually killed by her family’s horse. whether it was because she was riding it or she got to close and it kicked her is unknown. We know it was a horse that killed her as her father said “that horse killed my baby”
@@nightstareternal1592 Ooh! Thanks for telling me and well spotted. I thought she was killed by the plague because after she possesses the other Mary, she coughs - so I thought it was a sign she used to have the plague too
@@crystalDM96 You’re welcome 😊 I think the reason she coughed is because she had the wooden coin piece deep inside her mouth because she spit it out right after she coughed. I do know the mother who was taking the picture is sick. If I would have to guess, she would probably be suffering from Tuberculosis.

This was so good and soooooo creepy. The dead Mary’s smiling face reminded me of The Exorcist (the one movie that to this day still gives me nightmares). So much for sleep!

Damn I was partly covering the screen in preparation for the "camera swinging then poof the ghost appears" scene. This is the creepiest short I've seen in a long time, the movie perfectly channeled the feeling of a scared kid. Brrrrr, gives me the chills.
