    Nice relaxing journey between Guildford and Dorking along the north downs line with so much countryside to take in

      The North Downs is a lovely line, especially when the sun is shining

    Thanks for a fab video.
    I spent a lot of time going from Reigate to Reading back in the Tadpole days.
    I was born in the house on the left (at about 43m32s), just after Reigate Station.

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, there’s some history right there! I wish there was still Tadpoles now. The 165s don’t have quite the same charm!

      Clearly the north downs line is looked after, especially with the topiary at Chilworth

    • @delticbob6993
      @delticbob6993 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@emmo999 Yes it looks good along there, the same can't be said for a lot of our linsides which are far too heavily overgrown.

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s not the same priority it once was. With steam engines, there was a high chance of an ember causing a lineside fire. That’s not a risk anymore

    I think I just answered my own question; the yellow aspect before Betchworth followed by the green starting signal on the platform end implies that you were scheduled right behind a stopper and so had to try and keep your distance. Just shows how low the average speed is on a stopping service...

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And the signals are a long way apart. I was taught early on if you don’t ever reach a red you can’t have a SPAD, so once I get a yellow I tend to crawl

    This train has got flats, as that is some body left one of the hand brakes on, in a unit

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  ปีที่แล้ว

      This was filmed some time back. Any flats are long gone now, as machines visit the lathe as required

    I notice the third rail didn't start until Reigate, not enough use to electrify ?

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s a strangity, that Reigate to Guildford has never been electrified. It has always been the domain of DMUs. Reigate itself gets terminators from London, hence electrification getting that far

    The tunnel at 10:35 into the video which you refer to as Sand Tunnel is incorrect. It is officially known as St Catherine's Tunnel according to the Sectional Appendix.

    • @emmo999

    It seems to have been a pretty slow trip from Guildford especially. Was it just given a leisurely timing or was there a problem with the unit?

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Neither - the speed limit for our machines is 35mph, whereas passenger stock can do faster. So, yes, 35mph is quite leisurely

  • @wdobni
    @wdobni 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    technically a bad video....the sky is so bright and the ground so dark that the video is unwatchable.....some kind of filter or sky-blocking screen must be used to increase the ground contrast details and sharpness.....a lot of effort went into this video but its a technical failure in the photographic sense

    • @mdhazeldine
      @mdhazeldine 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's difficult if you don't have a high end camera with a high dynamic range sensor or HDR video capability and if you're facing into the sun. The best videos are when the sun is behind or to the side. I imagine that as a tamper driver, the owner of this channel is probably mainly focused on work and this is a fun side project that we get to benefit from for free. I'm thankful! That said, a graduated ND filter may possibly help a bit when facing into the sun, but they can look weird because the horizon is rarely straight on a railway, unless you're on the fens!

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As you say, Mark, this is merely a hobby. I set the GoPro up on the second man’s side, turn it on and leave it. I’m not out to make professional quality footage, with professional equipment. I’m a train driver who thought that people might enjoy a few cab rides that I hadn’t seen posted elsewhere.
      I will look into filters, but 99% of the comments left on my videos are favourable so, honestly, it’s not a high priority for me.
      I quite agree, Mark, the best videos are when the sun is behind, but the nature of railways and the network of lines we have means that I can never guarantee to face any certain direction for long. And with the limited daytime running we do, I can’t guarantee to be able to go back another day any time soon to reshoot it

    • @mdhazeldine
      @mdhazeldine 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@emmo999 I totally understand and agree with you! If I were you, I wouldn't bother with filters. They'll look weird. Stick with what you're doing and if the light is good, it's good. If not, well that's life. It's not like you're charging for it. And FWIW I've paid £20 for cab ride DVDs that are of lower quality than this and been happy because getting can rides of certain routes is super difficult!

      The problem is the auto-exposure is reading the frame centre, which is the bright(er) sky. Is it possible to set the meter reading point lower in the frame on the GoPro?
