Me all these years telling my love obsessed mother to read romance novels. She is not a book person, but if a philosopher backs me up, I must be correct 😂.
you brought me back to reading. i always read, but in the pandemic i kinda stopped. not as in stopped completely, but i always read on my way to work and in the pandemic there was no way to work it was just being at home. i really stopped reading a lot during that time. i recently started enjoying reading again. i feel it takes the right book to catch me. BUT your video on not having to understand everything you read in a book kinda gave me a new perspective and also opened up a lot of possibilities. now... i can just read... everything. if i want to. i dont have to remember it. just enjoy. thats strong. i thank you for that. thats a really strong message.
Ways I find books what I like: Find a genre based on other media that I enjoy Follow recommendations of people who have a similar taste in books Actually judging a book by it's cover like you said is a great way to eliminate decision fatigue, even if it's a little bit Find books in a library so that the hurdle of buying a book you don't have know you'd enjoy will be smaller. Accepting that there will be a lot of times that I won't like a book and that it's okay to move on to the next book. I like some genres more than others but what I found out that the genre that I enjoy the most are English translated Asian contemporary novels (often written by women). They're often short enough to read within a couple of hours and it's thought-provoking enough for me to make me reflect on life, but it's also loads of moments where they crush my heart, made me cry or giggle out of joy. But it took me years to realise that I enjoy this, so it might be a long journey for some. I hope to find more novels based on the preferences I have so that I can enjoy even more books.
I passed Tolstoy at Barnes and Noble this week & saw how big War and Peace was. Maybe this comment can convince me to pick up AK instead (I’m assuming it’s shorter??)
@@timdemoss It is shorter but it is still just over 800 pages lol. It's very worth it though. You will know the major people in the story better than you know some of your own family members irl. You might know them better than you know yourself.
I just watched all your videos in the series. Thank you for making them. I’ve been reading this book called Marketing a Very Short Introduction by Kenneth Meunier and after watching your videos, I just picked it up again and started reading.
@@timdemoss i just gave it a listen and can confirm the song perfectly encapsulates the mood of the book. a quote: “Dandelion wine. The words were summer on the tongue. The wine was summer caught and stoppered.” it’s a beautiful story
Dead poets society alone inspired me to start reading poetry😂 I completely understand feeling small in a cool way & understanding why things are the way they are today by knowing the history of them. Subtle yet profound.
Isn’t it a good movie? I watched it for the first time in an Airbnb in Boston after seeing the bench itself and felt almost completely transformed. thanks for watching!

Currently reading Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne for my monthly girls book club. Highly recommend to anyone and everyone who is looking for an easy, fun adventure!
There literally a book called The Novel Cure .it lists all kinds of emotional and mental ailments and real life situations and provides book recommendations
this is a tough one without knowing your interests, but I was just looking at my bookshelf & honestly The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame is a story that helps me out. It’s not “about” loneliness or companionship but it has great and encouraging scenes throughout. And it’s just a fun story to read. Other ones would be The Complete Tales of Winnie the Pooh by AA Milne (children’s lit) and Walden by Henry David Thoreau (much denser and nonfiction, but he’s in solitude for the entire time, so it has some interesting reflections on that). Again don’t know if any of these will meet what you’re looking for but I hope they do! :) and thanks for watching!
I wrote a sci-fi thriller about a man struggling to raise his autistic son. I agree that books are medicine--writing this novel has been cathartic to me, and has answered a lot of questions I had been battling with. It's also just a straight bullet of a novel, that was as fun to write as others have said it was fun to read.
As someone who is definitely not that qualified to answer this… I have a business brother who loves the book $100M Offers by Alex Hormozi. So maybe that’s a place to start.
I started to read How To Win Friends And Influence People. I probably did not read more than a few pages and I am not sure that I ever will read any more of it. It is one of the most disturbing books that I ever have read! I found myself reading page after page of blatent instructions for social manipulation! The title should be "How To Be A Narcissist!"
You could just as easily make the argument that the books teaches you on how to recognise manipulative behaviours and watch out for narcissists. A book called "How to be a Narcissist" won't magically make you into one. It's all just information, and how you decide to process and act on that information is what matters. Edited for grammar

if a philosopher says it you can’t be wrong! and his name even says “Sir” in front of it :)

Hey terrific ways to find books there! Do you have any specific recommendations for any of those contemporary Asian novels? :)
Reminds me of convenience store woman and all the lovers in the night ,
Maybe because I have these in my tbr and read a little bit of both
Don't Panic! Read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy if you want to appreciate the absurdity of the universe a bit more.
I can’t remember if I actually ever read this or if the story is just stuck in my head. but what I remember I do love!
Anyone looking to be more empathetic and/or how to appreciate there lot in life should read Anna Karennina by Tolstoy.

dandelion wine by ray bradbury: a book for if you're feeling disillusioned with life and want to experience that childhood magic again
There’s a Gregory Alan Isakov song by that name and I’m curious if it’s named after the book. Thanks for the recommendation!

ha nice. hope you like it :) Phileas Fogg is a sick name isn’t it? Although a little bit like Phineas and Ferb combined into one.
