Me all these years telling my love obsessed mother to read romance novels. She is not a book person, but if a philosopher backs me up, I must be correct 😂.
Ways I find books what I like: Find a genre based on other media that I enjoy Follow recommendations of people who have a similar taste in books Actually judging a book by it's cover like you said is a great way to eliminate decision fatigue, even if it's a little bit Find books in a library so that the hurdle of buying a book you don't have know you'd enjoy will be smaller. Accepting that there will be a lot of times that I won't like a book and that it's okay to move on to the next book. I like some genres more than others but what I found out that the genre that I enjoy the most are English translated Asian contemporary novels (often written by women). They're often short enough to read within a couple of hours and it's thought-provoking enough for me to make me reflect on life, but it's also loads of moments where they crush my heart, made me cry or giggle out of joy. But it took me years to realise that I enjoy this, so it might be a long journey for some. I hope to find more novels based on the preferences I have so that I can enjoy even more books.
you brought me back to reading. i always read, but in the pandemic i kinda stopped. not as in stopped completely, but i always read on my way to work and in the pandemic there was no way to work it was just being at home. i really stopped reading a lot during that time. i recently started enjoying reading again. i feel it takes the right book to catch me. BUT your video on not having to understand everything you read in a book kinda gave me a new perspective and also opened up a lot of possibilities. now... i can just read... everything. if i want to. i dont have to remember it. just enjoy. thats strong. i thank you for that. thats a really strong message.
@@timdemoss i just gave it a listen and can confirm the song perfectly encapsulates the mood of the book. a quote: “Dandelion wine. The words were summer on the tongue. The wine was summer caught and stoppered.” it’s a beautiful story
I'm in the middle of dandelion wine right now & absolutely loving it. remembered this comment and wanted to say yes it's absolutely doing what you said it might :)
I passed Tolstoy at Barnes and Noble this week & saw how big War and Peace was. Maybe this comment can convince me to pick up AK instead (I’m assuming it’s shorter??)
@@timdemoss It is shorter but it is still just over 800 pages lol. It's very worth it though. You will know the major people in the story better than you know some of your own family members irl. You might know them better than you know yourself.
@@ram5385 These suggestions won't be quite like Anna Karennina because that book is pretty one of a kind. If you want more like AK, then sticking with the Russians is probably a good idea. As far as other good character driven stories, I have two weird and dark suggestions. Something Happened(by the same guy who wrote Catch-22) is a really close view of a buisnessman who is a miserable and bad person even though he is financially well off and is a family man with a wife and 3 children. He sleeps with prostitutes and stuff like that, so it isn't for everybody. My other suggestion is a post modern book that is like 1200 pages. Infinite Jest has some of the most memorable character scenes I have ever read. I am currently reading Wuthering Heights. I am only a couple chapters in so I can't really suggest it yet. It is very character driven though.
There literally a book called The Novel Cure .it lists all kinds of emotional and mental ailments and real life situations and provides book recommendations
Love your videos man! This is maybe a bit niche, but I’d love to hear more about reading positions. As much as I (grew to) love reading, I’m struggling to find some comfy positions
I just watched all your videos in the series. Thank you for making them. I’ve been reading this book called Marketing a Very Short Introduction by Kenneth Meunier and after watching your videos, I just picked it up again and started reading.
Dead poets society alone inspired me to start reading poetry😂 I completely understand feeling small in a cool way & understanding why things are the way they are today by knowing the history of them. Subtle yet profound.
Isn’t it a good movie? I watched it for the first time in an Airbnb in Boston after seeing the bench itself and felt almost completely transformed. thanks for watching!
I'm still exploring different genre's I love the fantasy genre I also like romance (classic romance are a bit exhausting to read) but it's hard to find good books nowadays it's only filled with smut I read those to get out of reading slump Lately I'm finding it really hard to focus but still trying to read There was a time i used to read one book daily but now i can only read a few pages a day and it sucks😢
I wrote a sci-fi thriller about a man struggling to raise his autistic son. I agree that books are medicine--writing this novel has been cathartic to me, and has answered a lot of questions I had been battling with. It's also just a straight bullet of a novel, that was as fun to write as others have said it was fun to read.
Currently reading Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne for my monthly girls book club. Highly recommend to anyone and everyone who is looking for an easy, fun adventure!
I started to read How To Win Friends And Influence People. I probably did not read more than a few pages and I am not sure that I ever will read any more of it. It is one of the most disturbing books that I ever have read! I found myself reading page after page of blatent instructions for social manipulation! The title should be "How To Be A Narcissist!"
You could just as easily make the argument that the books teaches you on how to recognise manipulative behaviours and watch out for narcissists. A book called "How to be a Narcissist" won't magically make you into one. It's all just information, and how you decide to process and act on that information is what matters. Edited for grammar

Hey terrific ways to find books there! Do you have any specific recommendations for any of those contemporary Asian novels? :)
Reminds me of convenience store woman and all the lovers in the night ,
Maybe because I have these in my tbr and read a little bit of both

Don't Panic! Read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy if you want to appreciate the absurdity of the universe a bit more.
I can’t remember if I actually ever read this or if the story is just stuck in my head. but what I remember I do love!
dandelion wine by ray bradbury: a book for if you're feeling disillusioned with life and want to experience that childhood magic again
There’s a Gregory Alan Isakov song by that name and I’m curious if it’s named after the book. Thanks for the recommendation!

Anyone looking to be more empathetic and/or how to appreciate there lot in life should read Anna Karennina by Tolstoy.

oh that’s a great question. that would be fun to tackle. Fwiw I do 75% of my reading on the couch and 25% lying down in bed
Don't sleep on cookbooks! Just finished Salt Fat Acid Heat. Fire!
I’ve heard good things about that! 😂 yes don’t sleep on cookbooks!
I usually do two-three books from the genre i love and one nice cover. Its fun and i often find unexpected treats. (Also broadens my reading habits)
