To add some more info to the "shell account" bit - A shell is what we call the text-based terminal in a Linux/UNIX machine. Servers and other such super secure systems don't use a GUI (Graphical User Interface), they rely completely on the terminal to do absolutely everything.
Good Programmers in the days of yore (and even now), use the the terminal more than they use a GUI (not for browsing though - we now use browsers for that). Hence the term "shell" account. It was simply referred to an internet connection that would only be used via the shell.
