Have you ever listened to Body Count? It's a rock band that was led by Ice T. One of their songs was banned in the US. It's called Cop K*ller. I'm not saying Body Count is as good as Rage Against the Machine, but they had some legit lyrics.

My Favorite two interactions from Tom Morello is when fans/trolls suddenly said he was political. the two quotes are " What machine did you think we were raging against?" the other was “One does not have to be an honours grad in political science from Harvard University to recognise the unethical and inhumane nature of this administration but well, I happen to be an honours grad in political science from Harvard University, so I can confirm that for you"

@@chrisjswanson I'm Mexican. I absolutely adore what Rage has done to help aid the EZLN. And yes, if we're getting into specifics, they're closer to mutualist than traditional socialist, but I'd argue that socialist is a pretty broad umbrella that mutualist falls under. They've also expressed support for several MLM movements. One I can think of off hand is The Communist Party of Peru, which they gave explicit support for in the video for Bombtrack.
I think they mostly support any people's movement, and don't get too hung up on what their specific ideology is. And to me, that's how you build socialism.

I'm a 46 year old white dude who grew up poor from the Baltimore/D.C. area. I had mostly black friends and definitely grew up a hip hop head but started expanding my musical taste when I got to high school. I was exposed to grunge and Pantera. Then Rage dropped their first album my freshman year in 92' and I was hooked. It was like the best of both worlds to me. I would try to expose my friends to Rage but it was a hard sell because of the style of music. Then in 96', my senior year, they dropped Evil Empire. Rocked my world again. I saw them live multiple times. I was all about Rage on the rock side and Wu Tang Clan on the hip hop side so when they toured together in 97' it was like 2 of my worlds colliding. I'll never forget that concert. It was at a pavilion and we bumrushed security to get up close. I ended up standing on top of the first row of seats with a bottle of 151. What a show. What a time to be alive. RIP ODB.

Once you understand their brain, the reasons for everything they do and believe becomes immediately obvious. It's fear. And fear can be manipulated like no other emotion. There's a reason Fox News does nothing but scare the bejesus out of people.. There's a reason the advertisers on Fox News peddle stuff that makes conservatives feel safe.. Bunker gear, gun stuff, alarm systems, doomsday food buckets.. Advertisers KNOW where the scared people exist, and that's the only places they advertise.

This song in particular has a lot of socialist messaging including the Fred Hampton shoutout. He is not saying "voting doesn't change anything and we have to accept that", he is saying if you want things to change you can't rely on voting, you have to organize, protest and put actual pressure on the rich and powerful. Also the line "Fuck tha G-ride I want the machines that are makin' em" is a pretty straightforward way to say "seize the means of production". Great music combined with powerful lyrics. Their message was beyond socialism and beyond organizing protests. It was straight up communism and advocating a violent overthrow. I definitely don't believe in socialism or communism nor advocate violence but I do love Zack's zeal against the establishment as he saw it in his day. His day was primarily during the Bush administration - 9/11 and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The truth is the establishment which used the Right during his day flipped and now are primarily operating through the Left. Our real enemy now is a global technocracy which plays and instigates both sides but most people are either too brainwashed or too influenced by emotions to see this.

You can tell true Rage fans when you ask what their favorite songs are and this one is in their Top 5. A song that never hit radio waves for reasons, this banger is more or less unknown by the general public and lives on in the hearts and minds of the people who really get into this music.
Fun aside, I believe the "Just a quiet, peaceful dance" is a nod to John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath. The gist is about a migrant camp that the higher ups want shut down, so they hire some people to start a riot. The leaders of the camp watch out for troublemakers and when they find them they quietly escort them out. When the authorities arrive expecting trouble, they find nothing of the sort and are told it's just a quiet, peaceful dance. Been years since I read it so hope I'm not too far off. Grapes of Wrath essentially tells the tale of the struggle of the common folk, in this case migrant workers, against their for-profit driven masters who don't care about them, only what they do for them.
Second fun fact, Tom Joad is in Grapes, and RATM does a remake of a Bruce Springsteen song "The Ghost of Tom Joad".

Down Rodeo is THAT song! It has all the bars and word play. It did everything right. It's ironic too because it got absolutely no radio play and is still one of the fanbase's favorites. Side note: Rage won their fist Grammy for Tire Me which is also on Evil Empire. That was always weird to me because there were so many other songs more worthy.

Alright, I’m coming back to comment again after watching the video
This is peak Rage imo. Plenty of their songs have deep, powerful lyrics on par with Down Rodeo, but its delivery and instrumentals are perfection. I’m so glad that you got around to listening to it, place it in your top two and could appreciate the lyrics for how phenomenal they are.
You mentioned in Calm Like a Bomb that you wanted to know what his political views are, and one line in this song summarizes that up well to me
“A thousand years they have the tools, we should be taking them
Fuck the G-Ride, I want the machines that are makin em”
Zack doesn’t want the products that are sold to the consumer; he wants the means to production, the redistribution of wealth. Fun fact, Tom Morello actually majored in political science. There is an interview you can find on TH-cam with Zack where you can really get an understanding of where he stands within the first few minutes.

You should vote. Don't vote for one of the main parties if you don't want to. Vote third party if you want, or heck, write in a name. But if you don't vote, that just let's politicians know you're too apathetic to do anything. Using your ballot to express your disapproval/dissent is better, and it makes it less possible for the mainstream politicians to just discard Black citizens, youth, poor citizens, etc as too apathetic to matter. As women and POC, our historical kin gave up everything for us to have the right to vote. If it didn't matter at all, they wouldn't work so hard to keep the vote from us.

One time, someone had broken a window at the neighborhood gas station and they tried to blame it on me because white kids are rare in that part of fayetteville. (I knew who did it and they weren't even white) The gas station owner and the cops pissed me off so much, and my oldest sister's Ratm CD turned me into a little demon.
