I disagree with your statement the horses back then were not as talented. Today’s warmbloods are over bred and oversized and prone to injuries. Horses were bred for performance and speed back then as they should be. And they were better riders as they had more people who took years to master horsemanship unlike today’s 3 year wonders with money.
I have to agree with emmawillard. If you look at Ahlerich in the '80's compared to dressage horses at that level today, you will see how breeding has changed the dressage horse. But today's horses are more often behind the bridle, ie over flexed in the neck than 40 years ago.
What wonderful footage, after just watching the 2023 dressage in Mechelen, it's amazing the how different the head carridge is today & im sure most of todays elites would not like to be filmed training their horses
