Growing up I knew a kid called seven...yeah as in the fucking number...ya can guess how that turned out, ya know how many fights he had to have to stop or prevent mockery and bullying?, christ he had to become the most aggressive and intimidating kid in our school and area...all because that stupid name his mother gave him essentially made him a easy target.
He's called Steven now...or Steve which is what I and our friends did the courtesy of calling him from a young age.
Not everyone was as kind, considerate or understanding...they never are.

"Ariel" is neutral? Maybe it has some historical references, but there isn't a child to my knowledge who doesn't know that Ariel is the star of the "Little Mermaid". Put that name on your son and see how many years of primary school he endures before he screams at you for messing up his life. I'm guessing the first week of kindergarten.

I actually looked this one up. Ariel Sharon was a Jewish leader and I see that this is a name common to the Hebrew language. Since Jews name their children based on departed relatives, I suppose this is a name that resurfaces. I'm not saying it doesn't happen. I'm saying that it draws unwanted attention toward male children. It's one thing to be an adult who is fearless in the face of negative attention. Children are another matter. I'm supportive of inventive gender neutral names. Just don't consider this one of them.

Since I do live in the U.S. and kindergarteners here might be different from ones that live else where, I'd say "To be regionally specific, there's a strong association between The Little Mermaid's main character and fluffy pink princesshood. That's here in the U.S..Therefore, male children here might find an uncomfortable comparison. Which is not to say that shaming is an entitlement, but politically correct behavior is rarely an attribute that young children adhere to and, so, be forewarned before you name your child something like Tree, Root or Binocular because it is likely to cause pain". Now, bring on the "Tree" people!
