Coming from a guy that drives a 2000 bmw 323i 5 speed I gotta say this was a well learned lesson on how the transmission works in my car! Now every time I drive it I’m going to be thinking about this video!
As a hobbyist I've tried to understand this process for a long time and this is by far the best video I've seen on the subject. Amazing job! Thank you!!
I’m literally getting ready to rebuild a BorgWarner T5 out of a ‘92 mustang GT. This is the perfect video as I’m a mechanically minded person but I’ve not done anything this intricate. 👍🏽
A similar video on automatic cars would be interesting as well, you find a lot of videos on manual but relatively few on automatic transmissions (really going into detail)
I have built over 100 transmissions, I never had the rev gear engage like that, Maybe a European car? But the video is the best I have seen explaining a manual trans.
In most manual transmissions, the reverse gear is just an extra gear that reverses the output. But different manufactures implement it a little differently.
Amazing! Can you do semi-automatic transmission next ? I think that's what it's called. It's those scooters or cars which have no clutch buth are able to change gears.
@@helpontheway think of the syncroes as a Buffy. Better yet think of them as the springs for you car wheels. The softness the impact of the hard floor and the vehicle. The syncroes softens the stiffness of the sleeve engaging the output shaft
So, why is it so hard to engage first gear if you are not down to a complete stop? What happens when you change gear without pressing the clutch and you sync using the noise of the engine?
Most manual synchromesh gearboxes have detents that lock the shift rods when the clutch is engaged preventing you from changing gear without disengaging the the clutch first. It is possible to pull through them in an emergency, but definitely not something to should do on a regular basis. Older none synchro and sequential (motorcycle) gearboxes can be shifted by just lifting up on the accelerator, pulling it out of gear, matching the revs then pushing it into the next gear. But that only works going up the gears, you still need you use the clutch on the way back down unless you are incredibly skilled.
Wow now I can see how Volkswagen ruined a transmission by choosing to cheap out on those brass shift forks. Easy for them to blame the driver and his rough shifting ⚙️

My dad isn't a mechanic but rebuilt my transmission in my first car. Respect him even more now.
Amazing content, No background music, what a relief!!😂
I've never got the grasp of it that well. Thank you

@@theorgelmeisterakathesoapm8589 yeah they’re great cars. Mines got 241,xxx miles and runs like a champ and can take a licking!
I've driven manual for 20 years. This is so complicated I think I've forgotten how to drive!
@@pureheroin9902 would be nice!💯😉
Finally a clear explanation of how a gearbox works. Thanks so much for taking the time to do this!
I need to watch this again. How that synchro system works is what I need to focus on. Thank you for the video.

Then you may want to read up on gearing ratios

Automatics are for idiots
@@bobsmith3291 okay and?
@@maran947 they don’t make videos for automatics because they’re for idiots

Automatic transmission are quite quite complicated specially the valve body design.....But basics are not too much difficult to grasp...
Wow! Way more complicated than I was expecting. TY
Almost unbelievable that you provide this for free.
Very thorough explanation! Thank you!
Finally a good detailed video
That was pretty clear, good job!

Nicely explained in full detail. Thanks.
Team manual representing!
Kinda missing the old timey music, but this is good too.
I appreciate 🙏 your videos thank you 😊
what's mostly cause probem to a hardened clutch?

Please make video on network theorems
It's most difficult for me pls I searched everywhere please ...
DCT (dual clutch transmission) and automatic hopefully coming.
🤯 just got some basics😅
Maza aya
please design a inverter and induction heater circuit
Late notification 🙂
Another thing of note; 4th gear in most cars nowadays is a 1:1 ratio (or very close to that).
Usually the fastest gear in a transmission is going to be 1:1 unless it has overdrive like this one in the video.
wait, so you have to press the transmission first before you change the gear? i mean the timing always has be in sync with the throttle right?
use the clutch wisely xD
You lost me at the part with the slot and sleeve. Are there other names we can call those slots and sleeves?
@@jcorkable lol for me the video was amazing in assisting a visual. I just need some proper identification or other name to refer multiple sleeves
I think you mean the synchros

An engineering marvel, pretty humbling for us, the vast majority of the people who have contributed with absolutely nothing to the world
No matter how many times I've tried to understand transmission, I still have no fucking clue how this dark magic works...
Holy crap that’s complicated

Pretty sure not all cars have syncro on first gear... which means you get clashing

Fourth!!!!
I totally did not understand how it works.
Watch it again, pause the video, make notes.
FYI, this video tells you NOTHING about how to drive a manual transmission car.
Yes, we're an engineering channel not a driving school
What the hell is a 'Manual Car' ?
A car you can move with your hand, like a model car.
Yeah, I'll stick with an electric drive powered by an Omega-1 engine with at least 2 alternators.
Don't forget your hiking boots
