The only difference from my Mom's pudding is. She would separate her eggs. And add some vanilla extract in hers. Using the yolk in the pudding. And use the egg whites on top as a meringue. She would add a little sugar, vanilla extract and a bit of cream of tartar to make that meringue. Yep, you are doing some "old school" cooking.
This is the comment I was looking for😁. I was like where is the meringue🤔. My sister made the BEST banana pudding. She made us whip the egg whites by hand...ouch. She said do you want this banana pudding or not.....I had carpal tunnel for the longest😂😂😂😂😂. She also put it in the oven.
@@TM-kq4yl Absolutely, so did my Mom. Truth being told.. that's how I hooked my Husband, well part of it anyway 😉 I was the pudding stirrer. I ALWAYS made it lump free. It is amazing how good food can make a memory. I'm a awesome cook today from those "old fashioned Sunday Dinners" And was Married for almost 46 years before losing him to a blood clot in 2023. But I have 5 Sons and 3 Daughters, plus Sons in laws and Daughters in laws along with 4 Grandchildren so far🤭 Banana pudding and potato salad is a Sunday dinner staples in my home. Thanks for sharing your comment.
Thank you so much. That made a difference and that was last week🎉❤ much appreciated. God bless your life and your family. Happy belated mother's day if you have children
My mom will layer the cookies and bananas first all the way to the top and then put layer of cookies around the dish. She will separate the egg yolks and use that for her custard and use the yolk, evaporated milk, sugar and vanilla extract. After cooking the custard she will pour it over the bananas and cookies. She will then beat the egg whites until it comes to a peak and stiff then she will pour it over the top and then place it in the oven until it's lightly brown.
Very similar to how my momma taught me. Two differences: using a double pot method when making the custard & separating the eggs. (The whites used to be used for the merignage) Happy Father's Day.
Exactly! this is exactly how i was taught by my grandma. We put it in the oven to brown the meringue and it was warm and ooey and gooey!! But its so nice to see them make their pudding n not cut corners with the pudding mix
@@aka0819it’s usually on the side of the Nilla Wafers box, but sometimes they have the “fake” instant pudding recipe on the outside, and it will say that the other recipe is printed on the inside of the box. You can also just Google “Nilla Wafer Banana Pudding Recipe”. 😊
We usually had Banana pudding with lunch on Sunday after church and you're right cooking it from scratch makes all the difference. You're grandma's recipe looks delicious!
Just made this! A little short on the cookies, but a few crumbs made it to the top. This is the 1st time I've ever done a homemade custard. I did good! Thank you so much. You've taught me so much!
I'm old skool too AB. I grew up on a lot of cakes, pies, and custards--banana pudding was a favorite. I loved pudding but I hated the darkening/texture of the banana after refrigerated, so I adapted my mom's recipe. And without taking over your comment section, let's just say lemon juice was part of my adaptation.
Looks great AB! Chessmen cookies for me. I separate the yolk and use it for my custard. To the vanilla extract I add in butter extract, it takes it over the top! Happy Father's Day AB and all the father's who are watching this video today🎉🎉
I made this last night and chilled it overnight. The pudding is runny, it didn't thicken up enough but I'm still eating it. The taste is fantastic, next time I'll cook the pudding longer to thicken it up more. Thanks AB!
This looks very similar to my Grandmothers pudding. She has been gone so long I can't remember how she made it, but I'll bet it was very close to your recipe. I can't wait to give it a try. Thank you.
Looks great and I’m sure it tastes great too! But it’s only right for me to have oven baked banana pudding with the meringue lightly browned on the top that my great aunt used to make. Warm and fresh😋 Me and my cousin are still trying to perfect her recipe.
Banana pudding from scratch and not the box is the best. I usually set my bananas and wafers before I cook the pudding, then just pour my pudding over them. Looks great❤
Banana pudding is one of my favorites but what adds a spice to it is when you combine banana flavored vodka 🥰💯‼️🙋🏻♀️✨😇👌🏼 extra banana extract. Happy wonderful Father's Day to you A.B thank you for being a wonderful chef. I made your Grandma Banana Pudding omgoodness! It Came out sooo good. Thank You for making cooking so easy. I made several of your recipes and always come out so good.
The memory of my mama’s scratch banana pudding: A little bit of corn starch was used as the thickening agent instead of flour. >Sugar, > 3 kinds of milk (whole milk, half & half, & condensed milk). >Eggs >Real Vanilla flavoring (NEVER Imitation!) **The different kinds of milk and good quality ingredients made all the difference! Talk about smooth, silky, and extra creamy pudding 🤤 😋 😊 !!! Bonus: Minus the cornstarch and you have the same base custard for homemade vanilla ice cream 🍨
Man... that looks so delicious. I love me some banana pudding, especially when it's made right and homemade. Thank you for the recipe. Now I can make my own besides asking other people. Happy Father's Day❤
My mom’s banana pudding was so good. She did use the boxed pudding mix but it was the style that you cook not the instant kind. And of course it was back in the day before so many artificial sweeteners and ingredients were added.
Holy nutz! This is now officially on my kitchen bucket list!! My grandmother made this eons ago and it never lasted long between me and my brother!! Thanx for the how to! And here all this time I thought it was magic!!❤️
This is one of my favorite childhood "sweets" ( as my grannie called it). She made hers from scratch as well similar to your grandmother's however she had meringue on top. Thank you for sharing!
Nothing wrong with a simple recipe, especially handed down and tested over generations. It's the attention to detail that makes it good. That looks fantastic 🥰. Cracker Barrel, sit down.
I used to make banana pudding from scratch over the stove... but I now take the shortcut... however, it hasnt taken anything away from the taste... my pudding is still a WIN 🏆
Aloha. Never had banana pudding, looks hella sweet, but good. My mom always made rice pudding, sometimes with raisins. Great for leftover rice, just like stir fry.
I remember my mom would use beaten egg whites on top and bake it, for a few minutes to toast the egg whites on top and then she would let it cool in refrigerator and then serve extremely good. I miss her simple down home cooking, I have been remembering her cooking not a whole lot just simple good tasting food.....so I been cooking the way she did... a lot healthier and filling.
Wanda Parker my mom does it the same way. Use egg yolks in the pudding and the egg white is used to make the meringue. Also use almost 2 boxes of wafers. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there!
My grandma did hers the same way. Only difference was the pudding ingredients all started on a cold double boiler at the same time. Light the stove and stir until it thickens, then meringue on top and bake until the meringue browns. Let it cool in the fridge til cold. Best ever.
I grew up in south Alabama and this is a really good base for real banana pudding.
