A Foursquare Pastor Who Started Agreeing With the Catholics - Kenny Burchard

  • Kenny Burchard was a Foursquare pastor for a number of years, but even becoming Christian in the first place as a teenager was a source of conflict in his family, because of his parents' complicated feelings toward religion.
During his time as a pastor, he began to make several discoveries about Christology, Scripture, history and the sacraments and found himself agreeing with Catholic thought on more and more questions.
Kenny shares how he came to the conviction that it wasn't enough for him to just agree with the Catholics on all these things; he needed to join them in their communion with Christ.

As a life-long Protestant, who is a current attender of and believer in Catholic Church (not official), this is the best explanation I have heard so far of the thought process that occurs within the mind of a Protestant who is searching Catholicism.

*R Catholicism has nothing to do with God and His Words. R Catholic Church contradicts Scriptures in every possible ways!*
      1. Catholics say Mary was sinless. But BIBLE says Mary offered a sinner's offering. She was a sinner. Bible says Mary needed a Saviour. Lk 2:23-24, Lev 12:6-8, Rom 3:10.
      2. Catholics say clergies must be celibate. Yet BIBLE says Peter (supposed R Church first leader) had mother in law. Bible says celibacy is not a qualification for clergies. Mat 8:14-15, Mar 1:30-31, Luk 4:38-39.
      3. Catholics say Mary was forever virgin. Yet BIBLE says Jesus had brothers and sisters. Mary was not perpetually virgin. Mk 6:3, Mat 13:55, Mat 27:56, Mar 6:3, Mar 15:40, Mar 15:47.
      4. Catholics say confess to R priests in a box. BIBLE says nothing about confessing to priests in a box. Bible says confess to GOD only. 1 John 1:9, Mat 6, Romans 10:9-10.
      5. Catholics say drink of the physical blood of Jesus. Yet OT and NT both say do not drink blood. Acts 15, Lev 7:26.
      6. Catholics say pray to passed on Mary and "saints". Yet BIBLE says do not contact the dead. NT Church did not record a single case of NT believers asking passed on saints to pray for them. Deut 18:11, Isaiah 8:19.
      7. Catholics make and bow down to statues. BIBLE says do not bow down to graven images (statues). Deut 4, Exo 20:4-5.
      8. Catholics sprinkles “holy water”. But NT Church of the Bible mentioned nothing about “holy water”. There was no record of any Apostles sprinkling “holy water” on believers. Catholics claimed “holy water” came from OT. Yet Num 5:17 says “holy water” was water used to test adulterous women in OT temple. Hardly the same. Those were for Old Covenant Jews. Not New Testament Christians.
      9. Catholics say Peter was pope - bishop of all bishops. Yet BIBLE says Peter was just a leader of the Jerusalem Church. Bible says nothing of the office of bishop of bishops. Gal 2:9, Mat 16:18.
      10. Catholics say there is a seat of Peter. Yet BIBLE says nothing about it. Jesus said “not to lord over others”.
      11. Catholics has clergy priesthood. Bible says clergy priesthood was done away with in New Testament. There is no clergy priesthood in NT. Heb 7:27, 9:12, 10:10.
      12. Catholics preaches Works Salvation (faith + good works + partake R sacraments + submit to R pontiff + be in R Church + devote to Mary = to be saved). Yet Bible says “believe in Jesus to be saved”. Bible says Works Salvation is cursed. Gal 1:8-9. Acts 16:30-31, John 3:16, Romans 10:9-10.
      13. Catholics says they must do Penance to atone for their sins. Yet Bible says repent, confess and sins will be forgiven. Catholic Bible changes the word “repentance” in NT into “penance”. Original Greek NT does not use or mean the word penance. Penance = work to atone for sins. Repentance = change of heart. 1 John 1:9, Mat 6.
      14. Catholics say Mary went straight to heaven without dying. Yet Bible says nothing about it.
      15. Catholics say Islam and Christianity have the same GOD. Yet Islam doesn't believe in death and resurrection of Jesus and Trinity.

@@savedbygrace8337 It happens all the time. My wife was Baptist and started to get annoyed that the preaching in her church spent alot of time telling the congregation about what other people who called themselves Christians but really weren't, instead of preaching from the Bible. She heard all sorts of things about what Catholics believed until she met one who said "no, we don't believe that." At first her response was "yes, you do!" but then realized how silly it was to tell someone else what they believed. She eventually started asking questions and learned that most of what her pastor was saying about other Christians was wildly misrepresented or flat out untrue. When that happened it was a domino effect from there. My best friend is Baptist and he tells me all the time what I believe and sends me sermons from his pastors that wildly misrepresent or are inaccurate or blatantly false regarding Catholic teaching. I haven't heard it in the Catholic Church yet although I see plenty of nasty comments from Catholics on TH-cam. But my point specifically is we should be aiming for unity and not aiming for division through misrepresentation and ugliness.

      Major things:
      Baptism's role on salvation
Church or bible pillar of the truth?
What do the keys and the power to bind means?
Does God forbid images or idolatry?
Is bowing "to" an image a true and unmistaken sign of idolatry or not? Do we actually bow TO the image?
The words of Christ, and its repetitions, about the nature of the Eucharist tell it to be His body or just a wafer?
Are people saints if they live a life of true obedience to Christ's commandments or not?
Are the saintly deceased dead or alive in God?
If they are alive could they or not intercede with Christ by praying for us?
Also, if such people are saints (separated for God), Is Mary a saint or not?
      Is there hierarchy in Heaven?
How could her act of acceptance, the salutation of the angel, the salutation by st. Isabel and her own prophecy while praising God compare her to all these other saints?
I think if you cover it, and you will find plenty of evidence for the cases above in the bible, i am sure you will convert to Catholicism.
But, if you are still unsure, you should read what the Christians who first learned from the apostles believed and practiced...there is no escape from there! Pax Christi!

@Troll Patrol Roman Church leadership does not boast in the Lord, they boast in the traditions of the Roman Emperor who is long since dead flesh. That's what much of Catholicism is about; boasting in the traditions of the Roman peoples. That tradition included conquest by violence, the great Roman cultural principal. That's not to say there are no Christians in the Church of Rome, of course there are, it's simply points out that even to this day the egotistical need to dominate other people's is strong in much of the Catholic Church, especially the leadership. Human flesh is attracted to this type of power. It brings a false sense of security and fleshly community. Not all that Rome promotes is in error. May the Holy Spirit open your eyes to what is truth and what is fleshly pride coming from Rome.

When my kids were little, we had a wonderful teen babysitter with a passion for Christ and the Bible. One day, she approached me, very seriously and with great love, saying she had been told at her church that Catholic are not Christians, yet she had seen that we most certainly were. She asked about the usual things ... Purgatory, Mary, etc. ... and I explained Catholic doctrine in terms I thought would meet her where she was at that time. She pondered it all and said that, while she didn't agree, she did see how we could truly be biblical Christians while holding these teachings to be true.

I took it to mean in reality not that she felt, as an emotional feelings, but that she has seen evidence as in fruit, you know fruit of the Holy Spirit, that she saw good fruit, and in her discernment that is the babysitters discernment, determined that as Christ said we will know them by their fruit, that it was quite possible, based upon the hard evidence of the fruit, the good fruit, that they had indeed received Christ as their savior and his work on the cross as justification, and thus now being sanctified were producing the fruit of the Spirit, regardless of the errors, and there are many, in the Roman Catholic Church. It may just be when Christ said, do not judge, that he was referring to people as yourself who judge people as unsaved and heathen when they know not the person but merely hear of them, and have not seen the actual fruit, or the lack thereof, but a representation of it in language only.

I must admonish you for being so judgmental as to judge me for being judgmental! I mean, you don’t know my heart, right? 🤨
The Bible really doesn’t tell us not to judge. That is a misrepresentation of Matthew 7:2. The verse is telling us to be very, very careful, for we will be judged with the same standard by which we judge others. Instead, Scripture tells us to “judge righteous judgment” (John 7:24). Indeed, this passage exhorts us not to judge by appearances (which seems to be what the babysitter did) but by using due diligence to figure out what is actually the case.
Any ultimate judgment of another person is left to God alone. We are too limited, too fallible. We can never know enough. On the other hand, it is often our Christian duty to discern, as closely as we can, the state of somebody else’s faith. How else can we properly help them?
I had a student once, a devout Muslim, who, in terms of the “Gifts of the Spirit” was head and shoulders above his Christian classmates: so humble, so generous, so respectful! I have also known Mormons who have exhibited a joyful and welcoming attitude towards others that far outstripped any I knew in the body of Christ. I think it obvious that part of our discernment of others needs to center on the CONTENT of their theological commitments. One must be faithful to the teachings delivered to the Saints.

As I've already shown from Scripture, He commissioned His Church with His authority to evangelize "feed and tend His sheep and lambs" through seven sacraments.
St. Paul was liturgical, sacramental and Eucharistic as was St. Peter, all the other Apostles and those they ordained.
The evidence is also secure in the Early Church and the writings of their bishops and martyrs. The Church continued to practice seven Sacraments.

@Barb Wellman *- You are still misquoting Scriptures. John 3:5 says nothing about water baptism. Which part says water baptism?*
*- You are misquoting 1 Pet **3:21**. You totally missed out the word "symbolic, figure of speech, form, likeness". 1 Pet **3:21** does say water baptism is "symbolic".*
    1 Peter 3:21
(ISV) Baptism, which is *symbolized* by that water, now saves you also, not by removing dirt from the body, but by asking God for a clear conscience based on the resurrection of Jesus, the Messiah,
(DRB) Whereunto baptism, being of the *like form* , now saveth you also: not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but, the examination of a good conscience towards God by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
    (Murdock) And ye also, by a *like figure* , are made alive by baptism, (not when ye wash your bodies from filth, but when ye confess God with a pure conscience,) and by the resurrection of Jesus the Messiah;
    (ASV) which also after a true *likeness* doth now save you, even baptism, not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the interrogation of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ;
*- Acts 2:38? This has to do with English sentence structure.
    - Example: go to the kitchen, open the drawer, take out the medicine, eat and be saved.
    - In this example, only eating the medicine saves. The rest of the actions do not.
    - Similarly Acts 2:38. Only believing in Jesus/ repentance saves. Nowhere says water baptism saves.*

According to Scripture, which you apparently missed:
    Christ speaking here:
Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God” (John 3:5).
    1 Peter 3:21
21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,....
    Acts 2:
38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off-for all whom the Lord our

*Or "saints that Christ is pleased to and will grant absolution of punishment of venial sin (that other saints are seen committing or their acts of omitting) through the intercession of other saints."?*
*You are just quoting verses then using your m m narratives as doctrines? 1 John 5 does not say that.*
    you said
1 John 5 does not exclude intercessory prayer for saints released from their bodies who others know committed venial sin (sin that doesn't lead to death).
1 John 5 assures saints that Christ is pleased to and will grant absolution of punishment of venial sin (that other saints are seen committing or their acts of omitting) through the intercession of other saints.
"13 I write this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.
14 And this is the confidence which we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His Will He hears us.
15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made of Him.
16 If any one sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for that.
17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal."
Christ is pleased that His saints offer intercessory prayer for those
    souls undergoing purgation:
    Luke 12:
47That servant who knows his Master’s will but does not get ready or follow His instructions will be beaten with many blows. 48But the one who unknowingly does things worthy of punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and from him who has been entrusted with much, even more will be demanded.

Christ, on Resurrection Sunday, walked through the walls of the Upper Room and commissioned His Apostolic Church with an authority that could only come from Himself:
      John 20:
21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, even so I send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
