That's the good news and the bad news is once that family leaves the hospital with their new baby that doctor will never see them again or the baby! As sad as that is, it's the truth.
My daughter is 6 months old but she was like that when she was born. She was 33 minutes old when they wrapped her up and handed her to me. She was quiet and looking around. It was adorable because when she looked at me, you could tell that she was thinking, so you're that nice lady who's been talking to me all this time. I talked to her from the minute I knew she could hear me. It was like she was putting my face to my voice. I said to her, hi, nice to meet you after waiting so long. I love you. She's so smart. Even the nurses and the doctor commented on how aware of her surroundings she was. Just getting that little bit of time to bond with her like that when she was first born was the most precious moment of my entire life. She was looking at me and looking around and looking at the stuff on the wall behind me.I told her, I know it's scary out here but it's okay, mom is here for you. I'm not going to leave you. I just held her as much as she wanted to be held. At first, when she cried, I thought maybe she was hungry because I hadn't really eaten since the night before. I ate dinner and then went to bed and then woke up at around 4:00 in the morning and realized I was probably going into labor. At about 5:30 in the morning, I realized it was the real thing and called 911. So I figured she was probably hungry. They brought me a bottle but she didn't really want to eat too much. I think she just wanted me to hold her. So I did, I held her as much as she wanted and I ignored those people who were telling me that I was going to spoil her. You can't spoil a newborn. This is a beautiful, strong baby and it's very nice to see a doctor who loves working with them. I love that smile on his face every time.

Alot of what he is doing is checking newborn regular and normal reflexes and other thing in a full term newborn examination. It is a fairly lengthy exam.

If they get less than 7 the testing should be done again later when the baby s warmed up and it's feet and hands are pinker. If it still is not up to 7 it must be be more thoroughly tested.
