I used my points to pay for half of my fare this time. Another suggestion would be to keep your travel plan flexible. Airlines tend to charge more on certain day(s) in the week, and less on others. If you can keep your itinerary flexible, you could score a relatively cheaper fare.
My complete itinerary includes going from London Gatwick to Narita via Dubai in Economy, and then in Business class via the same route on my return flight. The entire trip cost just under £2350 at the time.
