    I really love your nerd kind of lab! Great job on the program, too! I've also created my own program to fully-automate my lathe but still need to tweak a few things. Great job!

      Yeah I have cut records for a long time and it is it awesome seeing folks doing home lathe cuts.
      I even like the novelty toy cutters too.

    will you be ever let people download the auto groove spacing program or would you give a tutorial for the process? that seems really awesome, also thank you for the video!

    • @fprecordings
      @fprecordings  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah I'd need to screenrecord it. Basically the pi pico that controls the lathe goes through an array of numbers 0-9 (0 being stopped and 9 being the most spaced out). It increments at 5 values per second and the value changes the speed of the stepper motor. The program creates the array that can be sent to the pi pico. I wouldn't mind sharing the code for the python program and the pi pico.

      @@fprecordings that would honestly be lovely, i have never tried to make a lathe before so its probably a steep learning curve, where would you reccomend searching for advice or instructions on how to make one? also thanks!

      @@PR0EST The concept is simple. Make a needle vibrate with a speaker. But it took me years to get it fine tuned. I would say that lathe trolls is the only good forum for this type of thing but it's full of old dickheads that aren't nice to newbies. If you do digging you can piece together what you need.

    Hi. Can I ask what kind of stylus you use. And how do you solve the noise problem. Thank you

    • @fprecordings
      @fprecordings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use a cone tipped sapphire embossing stylus. I use microfiber cloths to polish the blanks now and that has greatly reduced surface noise. The angle of the stylus and groove depth/head weight also affect noise level.

    What do u use to know how much weight to put down when the cutter head goes Down? Counter weights at the back sort that kinda thing? I've bought a stepper motor and micro stepping driver I will pair with an arduino. Do u recommend using the extra thing u had on your arduino...the red one..

    • @fprecordings
      @fprecordings  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I have counter weights on back but haven't actually weighed it. I just got it right with trail and error. The red board consists of a Pi Pico, LCD, and bluetooth transmitter.

      @@fprecordings i bought an arduino rev3 today, people are telling me i dont need to use a pico, do you think its worth having the pico aswell?

    • @fprecordings
      @fprecordings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Stefan.X. I'm sure an Arduino would be fine. I just had a couple picos lying around so that's what I used.

    You don't use RIAA-style back and forward re-equalization for less space between grooves On the bass?

    • @fprecordings
      @fprecordings  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I apply RIAA and the EQ specific to my cutter head digitally.

    • @fprecordings
      @fprecordings  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Polycarbonate just doesn't get good stereo separation for some reason. I've switched to cutting lacquers with a sapphire stylus.

    The most important question is, are frequencies above 7 kHz properly recorded?

    • @fprecordings
      @fprecordings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's a drop-off that starts at 8kHz. I've started cutting at half speed to combat that issue.

    • @robfriedrich2822
      @robfriedrich2822 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fprecordings Do you mean, it sounds like a hard high cut? Or is it something, where 16 kHz are 10 dB less?
      Because this would be normal, that higher frequencies are a bit discriminated.
      Someone tested companies, where you can order a lathe cut and one of them had a sound like a digital wave file, what has a rate of 14 kHz.

    • @fprecordings
      @fprecordings  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robfriedrich2822 There's a significant drop from 8 to 10kHz. Around 10 -12db, then it kind of levels out until around 16khz before there is another big drop. Cut at half speed it gets up to 16kHz before there is a drop and still does a good job before I apply low pass at 18kHz.
