  • The largest craft market in Thailand. If you're visiting Chiang Mai, be sure to include Baan Tawai Village in your Chiang Mai travel plans.
Thailand is famous not only for its food and night markets but also for its Thai crafts.
This wood and furniture market just 15km south of Chiang Mai has some of the most incredible handmade wood furniture and artwork I've ever seen.
You'll find everything here from wood furniture to incredible works of art.

I recently acquired a complete living room and dining room set of this hand carved furniture. Now doing some research to see what I got and needless to say, I'm pretty stoked. Thanks for the video tour! :)

Most shops won't allow shooting video or photo, because their competitors might steal the style of individual carver's carving or sometimes duplicating the carving.

just came back from visiting the village today
for those interested you can drive there from chiang mai on a motorbike and the roads are pretty flat ,
i advice you to take the road along the water and not the straighter freeway ,
i took the way along the river towards the village and allthough a little slower there no trafficlights , on the freeway there are at some pretty unexpected spots had a few times where had to REALY brake hard going at about 45kmh when i missed a traffic light coming up and traffic in front of me suddenly hit the brakes ,
once there was a litle disapointed in the size of the place and things to see
might because it was a weekday but there where a lot of storefronts that where shuttered aspecially outside the mainstreet
the big stuff and the furniture is there as is most of the gilded and rinestoned religious stuff , for the smaller stuff there isnt a lot ,
yes its about half the price of wat they ask on the streetmarket , bought 3 small wooden elephants for 200 baht , at a streetfair stall you basicly get one , and those are usually resin cast
the place where i bought them had a few of then on display and i noticed that there realy small differences in shape and size and the general shape of the head and trunk even though they where basicly the same , to me thats a good way to tell there handmade , wasnt realy impressed with he quallity and detail of the small stuff , my guess is they do this to keep the production price don some
one of those turned 45cm across wooden bowls was priced 150 baht wish i thought was a great price , quallity was verry good as well
i was expecting a little more of the other artistery like painting and clothes / fabric but hadnt found a lot of that there there where two silversmiths and that was it
i was more impressed when i whent to a wednesday night market the night before that about at the end of loi kroh road (one way street just point youreself toward all the market lighting there) realy nice market , and among some not so great performers there was one awesome band playing (think they start about at about 1900 hours ) at a foodsquare somewhere in the middle of it all , from wat i understood there playing there every wednesday and there REALY good

I've visited here a few times. I believe the shops selling larger items on the way in to the main stalls area sell imported carvings from Indonesia.
I found the main area patchy in the quality of goods available and bartering with most vendors got me nowhere.
There are other places to buy quality wood carvings in Thailand that are not overpriced for tourists.

I have a large very heavy stone carving that supposedly was a piece of a temple in thailandthat was said to have been smuggled here by a military man, how can I verify what it is and it's value???

You wonder why they wont let us take any photos? So it takes more effort for copycats from other countries to copy/replicate the products. We have to buy to see. If it was easy to copy, tourists wouldn’t buy this bc they would buy cheaper imitations from IKEA etc. it’s amazing artwork

I tried that in the late 1990’s for about 8 years. I brought in 2 containers full of teak doors and furniture and had trouble selling it for much over cost. I still have some furniture if anyone is interested. I will be moving to Chiangmai for good in 2026.

They don't let you probably so they can keep it unique and local and not have the image be stolen and have Chinese company steal it and sell copies off Alibaba or AliExpress
