Rewatching the video, I look like an idiot and should have just applied Occam's razor and checked the output devices first.
Thank you for the long video, nothing gets fixed in 10 minutes. And thanks for showing the ‘steps’ you took to problem solve. We learn from our mistakes. It takes time and patients to tech out an electron issue. Heck most people still don’t know how to use a multimeter let along a variac. The majority of people wouldn’t even take the damn thing apart! The one click shopping generation will just buy a new one. Craftsmanship is alive in some of us. Keep making your long videos man. This video was very helpful. Although my Sony unit is dead it did last for over 10 years!!!! Str-k790
As a rank amateur in the realm of electronics repair, I wanna say thanks for making these videos. The process you followed to troubleshoot the fault is extremely useful. Even if I didn't follow most of it.
Thanks for the post, and detailed analysis using a comprehensive range of test equipment. Certainly showing what it can do. Some years ago, I built a kit stereo amplifier using the Hitachi 2SJ48/2SK133 MOSFET pair output. Each channel had a fused (2A, fast blow, 3AG socket), both on the +V, and -V supply rail to each MOSFET. The idea of this was to enable the fuse to be replaced by a 10 ohm resistor, to measure quiescent current with a volt meter. Someone who borrowed it also shorted the speaker terminals of one channel, and, thankfully, only blew a fuse. It seems the more modern commercial (Sony) design techniques 'bypass' the idea of using 1 fuse per output device...
I enjoy watching your vids and you are NOT an idiot! Even with my experience, it is so easy to be lead astray at times! The feel of success in the end is why us engineers do what we do!

For a temp fuse I use the reset-able fuse in an old power strip...the button on the side of the power strip would tell you it has one in it..just take it apart and solder leads on it...They usually are around 15 amps...but it is better than jumping it direct...

I have one doing the same exact thing with the clicking with the power button and with speaker toggle. I learned a lot from watching u Man U know just enough to not confuse me and keep it understandable thanks
This receiver is part of an all-in-one home theater system (HT-DDW900), not intended to be used without the provided subwoofer.
You can turn The sub off. Set levels, distances, speaker sizes.. everything. I believe those have a calibration mic input

You should be able to shut down the subwoofer.
In the speaker settings (you’ll need a remote for this), you will have a choice to choose the speaker size as well as the number of speakers you have connected to it. The option should be “large” for the fronts if you want full bandwidth and then choose subwoofer to “no”.
Man I learned more from watching you troubleshoot this because I have one doing the exact same thing no digital the clicking with the power button and speaker toggle
You can also use a 100 watt light bulb in series with the hot( black) wire to see if there is a short...if the bulb glows it is a short...if dimly lit its ok...
If it's like the one I have you have to use a microphone placed in your normal seating area to adjust the outputs. It sends out test tones from all speakers and auto adjusts. It was horrible. I went back to the Sony STR DE885
I was thinking all the way through to check the output transistors first as they are a very common fault, and knowing the history of the unit. Then I would have checked the bridge rectifier. If at that point, those were all good, then I would have dug in much deeper. That being said, the protect circuit didn't seem very good on this unit as it should protect the rails.
is it a FULL BRIDGE RECTIFIER? (zoom in and super loud electroboom voice)

On my Sony ES reciever you set the front speaker size to large if you are not using a subwoofer.
I know this is an old thread...but I just had to say something....I would have looked on the bottom of the receiver and see if they made a removable panel, so you would not have to take it all apart...
I just wish you’d shown taking the top off lol. I’ve remove all the screws on the mesh top and screws at back of the cover.. it’s stuck at the front under the front panel :(
I wonder if this was part of a "home theater in a box" setup.
If there is something wrong with an amplifier by shorting the speaker wires always check the output transistors first! :)
There is no way to set the "Speaker Size" in the options?
I've got a Sony unit older than this with speaker size selection.
Usually the final output transistors short and blow fuse's...I take the circuit breaker in computer power strips and use that for a fuse, as it has a reset button...AND I would make a light bulb checker, which will go between the power outlet and the unit under test, and the light bulb will glow if I believe there is a short..Use a 75 watt bulb ....Check youtube on how to make on..it is very easy to do.
hi boss ... i'm using this model..it's going to be protected ... when the menu is not in place .. as fast as the dvd, the instant tuner is off within 10 seconds of continuous protection and 2 3 seconds after the protection continues to shut down .. what's the problem

Once my receiver showed protect every time the relay for the speakers turned on and I found out that it was in a somewhat moist environment and I took it apart and found some corroded connections in the receiver I cleaned them and reassembled and bam it worked like a dream

I have never heard a tech with such an obsession with fuses! Santa, please, please stuff this man's stockings with fistfuls of fuses! We need a couple of dump trucks full of fuses to dump in his front yard. If we can, we should put in a good word for him as he sends his resume for the CFO position at Littelfuse or Buss. Anybody got other means to rid this man of his fuse fetish???
hi i have an issue with a sony av amp, everything powers up, all the settings on the display also seem to be working, but at full volume i can only just hear sound from the radio , i have no speakers connected just headphones, i have looked for broken solder joints and did re-flow some, but i cant get the audio up, i also do hear the relays working, do you have any ideas, i don't think the psu has blown. because i am gerring some sort of audio, any help would be brill, kind regards mike, i am new to electronics
Hello. I have a request. I broke my Sony amplifier power button and I don't see the power button behind on PCB. can you please let me know what kind of button your Mp has .
Or where can I find that button number.
It's a 6pin power button on pcb
you might as well order the big white emitter resistor as well.
Trying to switch my speaker input from micro speakers to normal speakers. Do you know how I can switch it over? I've got the setting to pop up but I dont know what to press to switch it over to normal speakers.

It is a Sony the first thing you always check with the Sony is your final outputs in the amp section every single Sony no matter what the symptom you got no indication doesn't turn on the fuse is blown you get notice lights the LEDs doesn't light up check your final outputs because they always blow something and nine times out of 10 it's something to do with the final outputs that blew something out that's the only thing I can say about Sony's they're consistent one of two things vinyl outputs or bad solder joints

I have never seen a bridge rectifier go bad..not saying it cant...or something else caused it to go bad...
the first thing u should do is check all the output transistors
the subwoofer for that amp have its own amp built in, but hey give it to me.
blown output transistors ...should measure like a diode.
I would have checked emitter resistors

The whole video I was thinking take a look at the output fets. I would have checked the resistor and BJT driving it.
This a old video and i just wanted to watch it because i just got one of these hopefully working condition it says so in description on ebay for $35!!!!! I know it's old but i'm just using it for my PC wanted something cheap with optical anyway lol you're better then me at diagnosing things and def smarter but as you kept calling the mosfets "devices" i was yelling at my screen lol no offense i yell at the tv when Gordon Ramsey mispronounces pasta and basil lmao.
